Hi everyone,

I have never done any matte painting before in my life.... ever...

But i have developed a very strong interest in it, and would like to start learning how to do it myself.

My question is, are the Gnomon Workshop DVD's suitable for COMPLETE beginners such as myself, or is there some other resource that would be more useful to me to learn the ways of matte painting?

I know how to use photoshop, and i can paint in photoshop to a reasonable degree, but i haven't really ever entered the world of painting environments etc. before, i have only really drawn and painted characters.

If the Gnomon Workshop DVD's are suitable for a complete beginer which ones would you recomend?

Might be, tho I think you better start by reading some articles....you can find some in the resources section; Matte Painting isn't all about technique, you have to know some environment theory too, I suggest reading http://www.wetcanvas.com/Articles2/135/120/index.php

Then you have to practice composition and depth of field through sketches and speedpaints...after that you can move on learning the actual matte painting techniques.
Many make the mistake of rushing ahead and find themselves having bad images altough they have a good technique.

Other than that I would start with Dusso vol1 and 2 which covers sketching and concept, which are a must, then go to dylan cole's tropical city and finaly chris stoski's dvd.

Yeah, I agree. Starting with the matte paitning ones aren't always a good start. I recommend illustration ones like Syd Mead and Ryan Church's among others. then go with the one's Suirebit said. :)

Wow, u didn't even mention Dylan Coles first 2 dvds? For me they were the best thing I could have watched to get me started in matte painting. They focus on painting, not matte techniques per se, which i think is very important before moving onto photo manipulation etc. Also, they really made me think about composition, value, perspective etc. I have all the matte painting dvds that gnomon offer bar the Camera Mapping in Maya dvd (too advanced for me at this stage), and the first 2 Dylan Cole dvds have been worn and worn and worn to death!!

I wont say these guys are wrong, maybe its a personal thing and people have different ways of learning, but dont discount those dvds!

Hell yeah, Dylan Cole's DVDs are definately worth the purchase. Good insight, great techniques and a pleasure to watch.

I was thinking money-wise...so I mentioned Dusso's vol 1 which adresses sketching, composition and values too...but if he can afford buying them all then sure, Dylan Cole's introduction dvd is a must.

Yea I think Dusso Vol 1 is very similar to Dylan Coles first dvds. Different traching styles obviously. but similar subject matter covered. I am a big fan of Dusso, so I would always recommend his dvds. I think in terms of how much of the basics are in the dvds, with Dylan's first 2 and Dusso's first 1, you will have enough to get you a very long way.
