Gephoria 08-12-2007, 07:29 AM looking for critiques on my gun, currently developing a mars mission game, and every main character needs something to launch projectiles hope you enjoy and hope i can make lots of improvements for this, also it is going into the torque game engine, first weapon so to say

You have tons of wasted polies, like having 3 sections on the sides of the magazine, and other areas where you have multiply sections and the shape doesn't change at all. Also I don't know what referances you're using, if any, but that's not an MP5 it's an M16a4. Overall the shape isn't bad, but it's rather squashed right now, and once you get rid of all the redundant polies you'll be able to put more detail into it.

Thanks for the feedback corrected some of the extra polies you were mentioning, if there are any other areas that could use more TLC pls point em out i got an amateur eye i think still You have tons of wasted polies, like having 3 sections on the sides of the magazine, and other areas where you have multiply sections and the shape doesn't change at all. There are still the useless polies Ramseus was talking about.
I guess he meant the ones along the smaller section. And they're not only in the magazine, but all around the rifle.
One other thing: you started with a cylinder to model the butt of the gun, but there's no need to left the cylinder integer and obtaining the butt by extruding new faces.
I guess that's your "main problem": you complicate simple geometries to obtain simple stuff. There's no need to :-).
Despite the wasted polies, I really like the shape (though I'm not an expert about automatic rifles, the only thing I remember is that I used this one when I was playing Counterstrike years ago).
Looking forward to see texturing. It won't be simple :-).
Nice work, keep on improving.

Looks almost EXACTLY like a m16a4 I tried making like 3 years ago. An artist quite respected in the industy once told me he models everything from one mesh. I think I followed that too literally and made some of the same mistakes you are making.
A gun is a bunch of assembled pieces, not one solid body. Yours doesn't need to be either. Try modeling the pieces seperatly. If you can easily weld them together thats good, but if it is just going to create too many extra polys or and ugly poly flow then I would leave it as a seperate intersecting element
You still have a lot of wasted polys, specificaly that large group of inset polys on the handle which would be about 3mm as well as on the scope and handle. They have edge loops running all the way around which contribute nothing to the shape of the gun. The scope also seems to be a bit too high poly for the rest of the gun.
I got quite a few weapons on my portfolio that show the wireframe as well. You can check them out if you like. Try to locate the portions I decide to have intersecting.

Ramseus: to those who disagree with the model of the gun, it's not that important to me, this is just a fun project, that's what i'm doin with it, i understand what you were saying now ramsus, i'll post another update when i get the time. Also working on a character and a TGE level, so yeah i'm kinda hands full :(
hyder: That's my gun in cs also, and thank you for clarifying what ramseus was saying it really helped out i feel
juddwack: thank you i'll have to check out the references in ur portfolio later on, just to get a different grasp on the procedure

well here it comes so far, lowered the poly count by a couple hundred since last post, still gotta give a little TLC to the scope and barrel, other than that thank you guys for pointing out the errors in my ways :) another update when i get time soon i'll b posting the "i want crit" version of my character

starting to look pretty good man, as you said you still need to cut down around the scope etc though on the polies..
however not to be picky, but isn't that a commado not an mp5? :p

i don't think that's an MP5...
but i may be mistaken.

the model could definetely be optimised, you have a bunch of wasted polygons.
