A sky is a fine way to do it, make sure you do give it a fully white color, and not a material with the brightness set to 80% (as it is usually), a background object is fine too. It's not always easy to get an exact look without experience of shading, lighting and post work. the XSI artwork you're showing there was made by a design team with quite a lot of experience.

For a full on white background use a sky or background with the material's luminous channel set to 100%
