View Full Version : dawning landsacape mattepainting
olli20 08-11-2007, 04:36 PM Hallo!
This is an image that i did just for fun two or three weeks ago. I submitted it to the 2d gallery before, but I think its more valueable for me to post it here to receive some crits, especially about the lighting.
this image is painted from scratch in photoshop, with the use of some textures, though i think its not a finished mattepainting yet.
So let me hear what you think!
thanks oli

It looks more like a painting/concept art to me...and yes, it's too dark....
Beautiful painting. Maybe just brighten it up a bit and use some photo reference/texture on it.

great mood, maybe it is too dark at first sight but you manage very well some highlights that enhance detail, I will look forward to the final matte painting

Beautiful painting! Perhaps a little bit dark as mentioned, but not much I dont think. The mood is great! This could easily be a finished matte painting, so i hope you continue your work on it!

ok thanks very much guys that was very interesting!
I think the darkness of this one is something everybody says, so i hope its not because my monitor is far from being calibrated, hehe.
but i have another question. getting to this point where i am with my painting is easy for me i think, but getting it to realism is far more than complicated.
so what would you do at this stage? working with textures or finding some fotos that could be integrated? Or would you paint it manually?
I think it can be achieved with every technique, but im very interested in what you would prefer, because i often get stucked at a point like this.
so thank you for your patience!!

I think everyone would agree that being able to paint your concept is the most important thing. You seem to have that nailed, so you can go either way now.
Most people tend to delve into their photo library at this point and start using the detail in the photos to bring the sketch to realism. Painting to that kind of standard is s skill that takes a lifetime to learn. Some can so it - look at Yannick Dusseault, he can paint entire mattes just because he cant quite find the right rock texture he was looking for, but for most people I think photos are a much quicker way to a good result. In a production environment you want to get your work done quickly, so using photos as opposed to painting every detail makes a lot of sense.
However, be aware that you will still need to paint in areas that you dont have a photo that will fit, or just to transition from one photo to another. Just dont fall into the trap of forgetting all your basics like colour, composition, perspective etc, as some people tend to do when they move to the photo stage. You have a great sketch there, so make the photos work with you, and not just destroy the work you put into getting the right values into your sketch.
Please post some WIP pics too, coz Id love to see how this progresses!
