Hi all

I'm starting this sketchbook to just improve overall my anatomy knowledge and also to get some tips and crits to push me along my journey.

Hi all

A little more background info about myself....well I currently work in the game industry in Northern California and have been for about 10 years. I graduated with a degree in illustration back in 97 and settled into games after thinking about a career in fine arts. I want to pursue that some day but really have no clue how to go about getting into the gallery scene.
All the sketches except for the 3 grouped heads are from life models. I try to attend a drawing group at least once a week depending on how busy work is at the time.
I love to sketch most of the time with a ball point pen. I just found my long lost mechanical pencil the other night so you might see some pencil sketches for variety down the road:)

I struggled with this sketch. I think I lost it early on with the overall proportions but tried to follow through. Had fun and learned some from it.

Great pose and lighting on this model but the angle was difficult. I think her head turned out a little big especially since its an up angle. I didn't notice at the time but at least I see it now:)

Made this sketch tonight but after scanning I realized the head proportion was off so I scaled to something more reasonable. Something odd about her left arm and shoulder and now looking at it her head doesn't feel planted onto the torso correctly. maybe I'll make more corrections in photoshop and post the result.

I feel the neck is too short even with foreshortening taken into account. Her right forearm is also too thin in comparison with the muscularity of her bicep; so it looks a teeny bit odd.

RedSquirrel
09-07-2007, 04:32 PM
I love your style of sketching. As for you previous sketch her left shoulder seems to be shorter in proportion than the right, either that or the head as to be moved a little to her right.

09-29-2007, 07:46 AM
The one in 35 is really nice but I think there should be more tension on the left side of her neck (her left). That and her left shoulder issue make it appear her head is out of proportion, but I don't think it is really.

Anyway, a really nice drawing!

I took some time to study the several areas of the body. I have a tough time with heads so I'm trying extra hard to study the structure and the way the neck connects into the skull. Back to sketching.

Womball
10-02-2007, 01:15 PM
I love this style of pen sketch. As for your issues, the chin is too large, the ear is a bit too elvish shaped (never seen a faceted ear before). As for the neck attachment to the skull, this occurs at the back of the neck as well. I think the trapezius (the diamond shaped back muscle that attaches to the base of the skull) can be viewed from a the front of the body.

forgot to scan this one from the other day. The head on the top right was done from a lower angle which was challenging. I find it difficult to make the transition from the neck into the head flow naturally. I'm busting out the anatomy books tody to do some quick studies of the skull and spine.

Hey i just wanted to say im really loving your sketches. They are so nice and free and its cool to see the construction lines underneath the shading. I'm also amazed at how much volume you can give something with such minimal shading in some cases. I was just wondering how quickly you tend to do these sketches?

muttonman222
10-03-2007, 10:13 AM
The time it takes me varies from 5 min to 30 minutes. Depending on what I'm focusing on and the models physique. I can usually mock up a heavy set or muscular model quickly because the masses are more obvious. The models with smoother muscle tone usually take me longer because its hard to see the underlying subtle forms.

I usually start with the torso shapes and work outward with the arms, head and lower body. I like to work with loose shapes where I look for general proportions and body tilt (weight shift). I try to roughly mockup skeletal guidelines (at least I try to think about it) when I further defining the masses. then I lay rough muscle shapes on top. Now that I'm writing this out I guess I think of my sketching kinda like sculpting. From here I lay in some basic shadows while further refining the muscles. then some detail and done.

Rangerman
10-07-2007, 06:35 PM
Muttonman when you put mass into your drawings do you imagine a basic shape for the mass such as a cylinder, egg, or a box? Nice drawings by the way. I like how some of your studies show how to construct whatever part of the drawing you're doing.

muttonman222
10-09-2007, 11:40 PM
Hi Rangerman

I try to think of simple shapes like cylinders and spheres when laying down the initial shapes. Helps me to think about how the forms overlap and helps me see rough proportions quickly.

I don't use Painter much, but here (http://mv.cgsociety.org/blog/) is a good PS brush set you can download that simulates some traditional (and some not so traditional) effects.

muttonman222
03-31-2008, 10:13 PM
Thanks Rebeccak-I've used painter from time to time but never got the hang of the papers and using watercolors. I appreciate the link for the PS brush. I'm having a good time experimenting with them. I'll tweak this sketch with the new brushes hopefully soon.

thanks Amruth9.

Frejasphere- I sometimes paint them up in photoshop and sometime dabble with painter. About 6 months ago I invested in oil paints and then realized that my drawing group is opposed to the smell and the toxic fumes:) go figure. So I'm saving up to buy some water soluable oils down the road.

Hi Ron, nice sketch with the head! Are you planning on turning it into a full-blown painting, or do you want to keep some of the drawn quality it now has? If it's the latter, I think you may be getting a little heavy with the coloring, some of your beautiful linework is becoming obliterated - you may want to just lightly tint with color in a overlay layer. But if you were planning on painting over the linework anyway, ignore this :)

I'm trying to force myself to learn Painter too. But I keep turning back to my good old pal Photoshop when the going gets tough... I try and resist, but I am weak!

Frejasphere

Hi Ron :)

Nice sketch - I've never worked in Painter, so can't give any ideas on that..
I think her proportions are a little off - but it could be the way I'm looking at her as well;
not sure if you are using a reference, but it almost seems as though her features
come from different faces, if that makes sense... eyes seem a little skewed, ear sits a bit low (face-on: top of ear matches close to eyebrow), left nostril seem a little low as well, and her mouth draws quite low (perhaps she's sad?).
not meaning to pick her apart.. I think the line work is really lovely - and I know she's still in progress... wish you luck exploring Painter :)

On the oils thing... why don't you use Turpenoid? it's an odorless Turpentine, which works
really well with oil paints - I'm sure your drawing group would approve :)

cheers and take care
a. :)

I got caught up in the hair and how it fell across her face and shoulders. It was a dramatic pose but was too short for me to capture all the shadows (damn my slow hands):) Looking at it now I think her breats are too low and the back of her head is shaped wrong. I wish I had 3 hours on this pose.

Rebecca- Yeah I agree I need to paint some of these up. If I were smarter I would've taken more advantage of my color theory class so I wouldn't be so hesitant to paint these up now:) Thanks again for the brush link. very helpful.
I'm reading a little about Richard Schmid's work (Alla Prima, everything I know about painting) and it's amazing. I love how energetic his brush work is.

Ceruleanvii- thanks for the feedback. You're right and I didn't see it at first that I was getting heavy handed. To be honest I wasn't sure what my end result was going to be so it ended being a little muddled. I think I'll try to push the image farther past the line drawing stage.

Frejasphere- Thanks for all your feedback. I know what you mean about the sad expression. She looked focused and maybe a little stern which I didn't capture. Part of the issue which I thought was in the eyes but looking more I think it might also be how the left eye doesn't sit in the right location in relation to the bridge of the nose. Great feedback.

As far as the painting goes I want to keep it fresh but I also want to ultimately end up with a complete painting so it'll take me a while. I'll keep on painting but in the meantime I thought I would post what I managed tonight after work. Crits welcome as always.

Hmm I've heard so much about Schmid's book, I'll have to get that. :)

Liking the paintup, maybe some lighter lights and darker darks? It's tough to keep that traditional look all along the way, but Painter of course is the best application for simulating traditional effects. I'd say go a little crazy and not get too anal about the paint application. Maybe take it back into PS to mess around with some texturey stuff and then back and forth with Painter.

thanks for the suggestions. I took it into PS just now and pushed the contrast and immediately it helped. I'll keep working on it with all your suggestions in mind. Thanks again.

So instead of going to bed like a sane person I decided to keep playing with this painting. Incorporated feedback but still has a way to go. Somewhere under the brush strokes and color choices I feel like I'm making her look more masculine.

Anyway off to bed...maybe:)

HEY ...Ron...:)

Still really enjoying your thread...GREAT DRAWINGS...
Stick with the Painter program..it has everything in it that you need..plus being digital, it allows you to combine mediums that would be impossible to combine in traditional mediums...like watercolor and oil for instance.
Convert your image to BMP, and work with versions..And SAVE AS like PORTRAIT OF WOMAN #1...2 ...3 ECT...that way you can go back to saved versions that might be better than your current version...this allows you to explore and experiment with your painting, and to take different versions in diferent directions, without losing anything in the process.
You might try going to EFFECTS at the top of your screen, select it and go to ..SURFACE CONTROL..in there you'll find LIGHTING..you can use those lights, any color you desire, to tint and spotlight your canvas ahead of time, and also your portrait as you work on it if you choose to...Use a blender brush,,big in size to blend and move the colors from the lights around , soften edges that the lights create ect.Give all of those things on that menu a try, some great things in there..:)
Also under EFFECTS, is..TONAL CONTROL...Select, and go to BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST..alows you to ajust the light and darkness of your image..try all the things on that menu also.
At the top of your screen ..go to WINDOWS...select..on the menu that comes up,..select... BRUSH CREATOR ...the two little windows at the top of that menu will get you into all of the various brushes, pastels chalks ect.
When you combine like watercolor and oil, you just exit after using watercolor, and then reenter to use oils on top of them.
There are some really nice blender brushes in the blender brush section, and also some really great brushes in the tinting brush section.
You can get a nice soft blened underpainting, and then go over it with the IMPASTO brushes...The combinations you can get in there, are endless.
ANYWAY..LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR WORK, AND THE PROGRESS THAT COMES WITH IT.. :)
I also really like that pastel portrait you did on page #3..nice job there..
TAKE CARE
Glenn

I worked a little more on this image. I'm trying to keep the painting loose and fresh while searching for the right colors. I like the direction its headed. I'm softening some of her features and made the eyes a touch bigger. Earlier versions started to feel a little masculine to me.

Thanks for the the feedback Glenn. I used painter in a very basic way from time to time but now I'm starting to make a serious effort to learn the program and all your tips help.

Nightwoodwolf- thanks.

I've also been working on some male anatomy in zbrush over the last few days. I was basing this model on several images of 60s era body builders that were not massive like todays bodybuilders. Also using a slew of anatomy books. Eventually I'd like to pose him up and finish up the anatomy. The head is still generic as I'm digging around for good ref. Someone with a lot of character. Mostly focused on the body as of now.

Hi ron !! :)

Your anatomy study is looking great :applause: . . . the figure came out in a good shape.

If possible, you can show any perspective angle too, specially from top area, so it will be quite clear to judge it perfectly.

keep it up

The painting's looking good, Ron - looks like you're getting the hang of Painter, at least more than I am! Everytime I try and do something in it, it comes out very harsh, I seem to have much finer control in Photoshop. I wonder if it's something to do with the Wacom working differently. Nice colors in the painting, I don't think she looks at all masculine!

Nice anatomy study too, I like the way it's coming along. The only thing that pops out at me - there's an odd curve to the tibia, i think it just needs some differentiation between what's the shinbone and what's the tibialis muscle so it doesn't look like a curved bone.

Good stuff!

You guys do know about the Brush Tracking Tool in Painter, don't you?
It allows you to set up Painter's brush stroke behaviour and sensitivity according to your "mood of the day". So actually, you should be able to have much better brush control in Painter (hypothetically). Try it... it will take you a while but if you experiment a bit with it you will soon come to like it.

In Painter IX.5 you open the Brush Tracking dialog as follows:

Edit->Preferences->Brush Tracking

Deepam- Added a couple more shots

ceruleanvii- I agree about the tibia. Yikes I didn't even notice that. I guess I got caught up in trying to make the shin feel fluid. thanks.

NR43- I tried it out but I'm not sure I feel a big difference. I'll read more about brush tracking. thanks for the tip.

Hey, good to see your 3D stuff, I would say it's definitely a good model so far. Something seems off with the shoulder / pec area, it's as if he's had a surgical lift there and things have become too tight :D - I think there needs to be a bit more roundness to the shoulders and a bit more separation between the shoulders and the muscles of the pecs. Also he looks a tad, what's the word, knock kneed? As though his feet are facing inward along with his knees a bit far. Also, hard to tell from the angled shots, but I think his head feels maybe a tad small, generally the head is about the height of the pecs and his head looks a bit shorter than that, but of course all of that is subjective, as are all these crits. :)

Cool stuff, lftm (my new acronym for looking forward to more) ;)

Today I was lucky enough to visit the legion of honor with my sketchbook in hand and made a few sketches. One of my all time favorite paintings. Bouguereau's the broken pitcher and yes I realize I left out the broken pitcher:)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/muttonman222/Bouguereau_BrokenPitcher.gif

This is a sculpture
Jean Jacques Caffieri Bust of a young woman

I sketched it twice as the first one turned out older looking than it should. I think I got a little closer on the second sketch

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/muttonman222/LegionOfHonor_02.gif

The last image is a sculpt of man riding a horse. Lame that I forgot to write the name down:( The hand is from a painting by the artist Mattia Preti 1665

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/muttonman222/LegionOfHonor_01.gif

I had no idea that artists could bring items like easels into the museum to draw. There were a doaen or so artists that set up around the museum today. Had a blast

Rebecca- thanks for the feedback on the 3d model. I've been busy at work the last week but I'll get back on the model soon. I didn't even notice the stance being knocked kneed but now that you pointed it out it really jumps out at me. that'll probaly be my first correction:)

Although we have loads of brilliant musea where I live, I've never seen anyone drawing or painting there and to be honest I would be scared like hell to do it myself lol.

It sounds lovely though... being creative in a room that is filled with work from old masters...
However, I fear my lack of confidence would cause me being distracted by every other visitor in the room. Oh well, perhaps I should... just for the heck of it... will see if I ever get enough guts...

Hey Ron!! Your drawings are delightful, as always.. and Great to see 3d from you!! :bounce:

I have nothing to add to Rebecca's comments, except to suggest that such studies are best done in the nude. That will give you greater freedom to sculpt. The shorts can be added on as a subtool. Great going, mate!!.. LFTM.. as Rebecca says! :D

Hi...Ron..:)

Really enjoyed those latest drawings...GREAT DRAFTSMANSHIP..
Also really like your work so far on that Z BRUSH figure..:)
I think that once you start positioning the legs out of that rigid pose, and streching and contacting the muscles acording to the pose, they should look GREAT.. :)
ANYWAY, KEEP INSPIRED, AND INSPIRING...

I was lucky to have the opportunity to attend the Gnomon workshop about a week ago. Such amazing guest speakers. Erik Tiemens was one of them that had a huge impact on me. He gave a great Gouche demo and I immediately bought some myself.
I tried using it here in this 5 minute life study. I worked on it a bit more from what I remembered after the life drawing session at home. I've never used Gouche but I like it.
Tyruben Ellingsen was also amazing and so was George Hull. Just awesome.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/muttonman222/LifeDrawing_52.gif
I think I made her behind a little too big but it was fun moving the paint around. Next time I want to try using Gouche on some type of toned paper. Erik Tiemens demo'd this and I really should've asked him what paper he was using.
