ForzaInter 08-10-2007, 06:54 PM My name is Dionysis (Dennis) and i come from Greece. I study Industrial Design and i'm in the final year. My dream is to become an animator and i'm currently working for it. So i'm looking for a Master and building my portfolio.
I began painting since i was a little kid, but soon stopped because i didn't like it very much. This held until last year, when i started sketching again! We had drawing lessons at the first year at my university, but i would barely finish a drawing.
I now like drawing and i hope it lasts! Haven't done many paintings, but i intend to do so since i have a drawing tablet, which is sitting on my desk with dust sitting on top of it!
This is my sketchbook with drawings i have made during this year. There aren't so many, since i didn't have much free time. Now i'm on a summer break from uni, so i had time to read several tutorials and draw. A few of the last drawings are made during the past 2 weeks.
I am posting images from the oldest to the newest ones. Please ignore the signature on some drawings:D
Comments and thoughts would be very much appreciated!
Thank you very much and sorry for my English!:)

Thank you for your kind words SpiritDreamer!:)
I will definitely have a look into the books you mention. One reason for me posting my drawings was to keep me motivated! I will try and keep my self warm, even though it's summer:bounce:

Hi the'e!
After a long period of absence due to exams in my uni, i'm posting some excersises i've made from Andrew Loomis' book "Figure Drawing":
Some of these drawings are a bit crappy, as i paid attention on getting the proportions right, rather than having the whole figure right.

Hi there,
good start on your sketchbook. I did a lot of loomis drawings from his books and can say that they helped me tremendously.
Looking forward to keep an eye on your progress...*subscribes*

Hi...Dionysis...:)
GREAT start on that mastercopy....when you do it, do it in grayscale...that's a great way to get used to studying and training your eye to see and observe ..VALUES..IT'S JUST EASIER AT FIRST, IF DONE IN GRAYSCALE...You don't have to worry about matching colors that way, and it allows you to concentrate fully on the values instead, which is key to getting volume and form correct to start with..:)
Really looking forward to seeing the progress on that one...NICE CHOICE..

Hey Glenn, this is the way i plan to do this, first greyscale and then color. But i stopped for now, 'cause it seems i have to work with simple light and shadow first, and then continue to more complex things. I started putting tonal values, but i find it difficult to continue...
I have plenty of new drawing excersises, and i should make the decision to scan them, soon :D

Hi ...Dionysis..:)
You might take a look at the OPEN FIGURE DRAWING WORK SHOP threads, if you haven't already, and have the time. There are about 20 or more of them....Lots, and lots of helpful and very valuble information in those threads, that will really be of great help to you with that master copy of yours..and to your understanding of VALUES :)
On your action figures that you are doing now, you might try putting light and shade into/onto those forms, to further challenge yourself...just imagine a light sorce, and how the light would flow over the forms, creating shadow....A great way to get more accuracy with the light and shade on these figures, is to buy a little maniquin, or doll with flexable joints...pose it,..light it with a flash light, or lamp, and do studies of it...That exercise improves your memory, and also conditions your brain by getting it used to working from realife, even though it is only a maniquin or doll..:)
Hope that is of help to you...:)
REALLY looking forward to seeing more of your work, and progress..KEEP POSTING...

Thanks A LOT for your suggestions and your time Glenn! I greatly appreciate it! :)
I was also thinking buying a maniquin. It would be of great help.
I have made some 15 minute, ehm lets say :D, figure drawings from the workshop and will be posting them in the proper section, soon. Will dig into more workshops, thanks :)
Looking forward to improving my shading skills! :scream:
Loomis, eh? I think it was the first book about anatomy that I read. Didn't finish though, hehe. About these sketches you're doing, they're after Loomis, right? I remember in the book he wrote "draw some of these but draw many of your own". I didn't do it, but I suggest you do so, will learn more. Because when drawing from imagination you really have to have everything in your head.
Oh, and always listen to Glenn :D
How much further are you going to push Leonidas?

Greetings Forz,
Great work you have here. I really like the effort you putting forth with these since the one way to get better at drawing is to...... draw. Drawing from masters is a great way to learn how others have interperated what they saw. I would suggest starting to draw from life. Use what you have learned from Loomis as a starting point. If you haven't drawn from observation much, here are some books that can help:
Betty Edward's:The New Drawing on the Right side of the Brain (http://books.google.com/books?id=LRTTGAAACAAJ&dq=inauthor:Betty+inauthor:Edwards)
And
Brian Curtis : Drawing from Observation (http://books.google.com/books?id=kFM3HAAACAAJ&dq=Brian+curtis)

I remember in the book he wrote "draw some of these but draw many of your own"
Hey razz, you caught me there :D I don't feel ready to draw from imagination, yet. I think i have to study the next chapters in his book, where he talks about anatomy, to draw on my own.
Well, with Leonidas, i will go as far as i can. Meaning, that i plan to make shading in black and white, and when i'm ready, jump to colours. It seems it's going to be a tough one, as i have never painted body, but eh, will try at least :)
Right now, i'm working on a workshop for light and shade, as Glenn suggested, and i believe i'll have an update, soon.
Devised_Poly thanks a lot for the visit and the comments! :)
These seem like great books, but i don't know which ones to buy, as i have already a lot in the list :D
I've read a review about the Betty Edwards book, that the brain suggestions are to be skipped. Do you have this book?
I have thought of drawing real people as you suggest, but i feel kinda...erm...embarassed, to draw strangers
Thanks a lot!

Awesome update Dionysis
i really like the tension you created on the legs in the last image of post 29
Contrast really works well there!
About your drawing of "nanny"... check the skull drawing you made in the same post and then check the skull proportions of your nanny drawing... even when it has to go fast (life drawing), don't forget about proportions... If you block in the basic shapes first, you can avoid this. Takes a whole lot of practice though (but so does all things in art heh)
Great work!

hey i think you are doing great progress..i say this to whomsoever i try to advice :curious: cuz it really helped...try some gesture sketching in public places...anywhere ..bus stops, stations, restro's etc..regularly for a while.it really really opens you up..do some intense 20 sec to 1 min studies..churn out as many pages as u can..if u can find newsprint sheets then then paper cost wont be an issue too
hav fun

Hello there, been inconsistent with posting...sorry for that. I am watching several of you folks' threads, even though I haven't got the time to post more often.
Been sketching as often as I can. I came to realize that, even though I hated sketching with a liquid pen, because of the "direct", clear lines, instead of the simple pen with softer lines, the sketches with a liquid pen look nicer! So, I think of sticking with the last.

This is what i did before the deadline for the IFW #01:
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll257/IllusionOfLife/WIP02_FAUNO.jpg
I'm keeping some facial features, and continuing from the wip before shading, so to add details before starting to applying shadows.
And a page from my big sketchbook (A4 size). If you can recognize the fellow at the top left, i'll be happy! First three from tv ref, the others live ref. Messed the hair up with one of them :argh::

The glasses are pretty difficult to paint, so many different colors and shading. I think i've given the feeling pretty well, so far. Wish i could show the photo ref, but i can't.

Hi Dennis
Nice portrait
I think you just need to push this last one a bit more ;)
You might want to flip the canvas at regular times. The neck seems off. Making the collarbones more visible will add to the subjects elegance
Keep drawing, keep posting!
As Johan already suggested, flip the image to see your mistakes better. It's always scary for me, but it needs to be done. All the mistakes show up and you end up with a better looking piece after correcting them. It's similar to coming back to a piece after a day or two. You just have fresh pair of eyes and see much better what you've done wrong.
Watch the values on this last study. Values - extremely important. And even though I hate working with lots of layers (I never do) having a few might help a lot. You might be working with loads of layers and not have this problem at all, what do I know. But just in case. Like here, it would be good idea to have the glasses on a seperate layer for easy editing of the face. Just a suggestion. I just can't stand having more than 3 layers, but it's necessary sometimes and can be a huge time saver.
Well, either you decide to work more on that one or for your future work, have this stuff in mind.
Cheers

Johan thank you! Yes, i didn't pay so much attention to the body, i quickly finished it, because it was a gift and had to deliver it on time :D
Taking these suggestions into mind and going to give it a try once more! By pushing it you mean to darken dark areas, and lighten the ligher ones?
razz can you elaborate on what you said about the values? Good suggestion about the separate layers, would be a lot easier, especially for later editing.
Done this tonight, a self portrait and a small portrait of my mother. Messed up with the self portrait, didn't put out the tilt of the head, as i looked in the mirror from above. The red mark is a mistake that couldn't be erased :D But, i'm pretty happy with my mother's portrait.
Going to do a lot more self-portraits for practice :bounce:
