View Full Version : Fighter Jet Through London VFX WiP
HokageMegatron 08-10-2007, 04:11 PM Hi everyone,
I am currently creating a VFX shot inspired by the recent red bull air race in London. The shot consists of an f15 fighter jet flying down a street and blowing out all of the windows.
I am thinking of developing this to make more than just glass shards, but for now its just the glass shards.
I am new to VFX and this is my first time tracking. I am using Boujou, Maya and Fusion of the pipeline.
I have uploaded a video to youtube so if you would like to have a look and see what you think.

The work is still in its very early stages; I have done a tracking pass and matched in some windows. The dynamics on the windows is in its most raw stage at the moment and is in there to give a feel for how the shot will look.

Any crits/tips on tracking or any other aspect is much appreciated.
Thanks, Dan

good stuff :)
you might want to consider building some place holder geo for the buildings and puttign a background shader on them, that way you could have some nice shadowing and possibly reflections to use in the composit :)

Its looking ok, but Id say your figther would need to be going about 3 times as fast, It woulkd have been good to have footage of a longer stretch or the street, that way we could have seen it cominng. But if thats what you got, thats what you got.
You need to find out what side the shadow falls on and as was said before build geo for those buildings, and track it so thery are tight, same with the glass, you need reflections on them, of the plane, seemed like you had a whole section of panels falling there on the left, youd need to break them up.
How about a second fighter behind it, a fired missile and an off screen explosion to liven things up, its a short clip to just have one jet and some glass shatter in. so you could make that the plane that fires, and have an earlier one fly by before.
Just a suggestion :)

Thanks for the feedback guys!
There is a new video of how things are looking now…

Many aspects have been improved such as added place holder geo, further developed glass shatter, jets moving at a greater pace and amongst many other aspects.
I was wondering what you guys thought of it?
Darken-R – Thanks for the tips, I was planning to get round to creating some placeholder geo for the shadows and reflection.
After building the geo I noticed how close the plane gets to the pale building on the right of the shot and so I think I am going to have to shatter those windows as well.
Airflow – Cheers for your ideas on the shot. I have decided to work in some of the ideas you suggested and add some more action in the shot.
I have now added an extra f15 in now and I plan for the second plane to fire at the first has the first leaves the shot.
Unfortunately my footage doesn’t extend much further so I could have them in shot for much longer. But I have added the two jets in to the shot right at the beginning, to give a sense of anticipation.
What you guys think of the action in the shot?
I was thinking either an out of shot explosion or some gunfire from the second f15. If anyone has any good tutorials or tips on any of the features I will need to cover in the shot, for example creating tracer fire effects or heat distortion then that would be much appreciated.
Any crits or feedback welcome

Hi everyone,
Here is a quick update from the last post…
* I have added a shatter to the 2nd building in to shot as the jets get very close to that as well.
* Pushed the time between first seeing of the jets and when they come down the street apart to add more believability in the timing.
* Have tweaked the animation on the 2nd jet, as it didn’t seem to hold much weight has the flies past the camera.

And here is a link to the video....

Any comments or crits on anything are welcome before I consider moving further down the pipeline. The shot has changed a fair bit from the original idea so I what to see what everyone thinks of it.:)

the planes are flyin way too fast like after burn x5 need bring the planes back there starting to close the edge of the cams

The jets are feeling much better in the latest video. And Camera tracking looks solid. I'd say the debris from the buildings animates too fast. Imagine someone drumping a bucket of glass from one of those windows, they would move much slower than your current glass shards. Its a matter of scale.
The jets could fly slower, however it doesn't bother me too much... Looking good!

Hi everyone,
I have got a rendered version of the VFX shot out now. This is the first colour and rendered version on the shot so I what to see what everyone thinks of it.

You can see it online via Youtube –

The video is in avi format and encoded with the XviD codec.
Thanks for the feedback guys,
*thehive – I think you were right about the speed of the jets been rather fast so I have reduced it.
*Drosselmayer – thanks for the tips on the glass your words helped me visualise it a little clearer and I have decreased the rate in which the glass falls.
Comments or crits on anything are more than welcome.:)
