View Full Version : Hypervoxels in Maya?
Douglask 03-29-2003, 02:04 AM Hey guys, just wondering if there's anything like Lightwave's Hypervoxels in Maya--or if there are similar plugins for visceral animated effects.
Cheers!

Maya doesn't have an equivelant to hypervoxels.
I haven't used fluid effects, but from what I've seen it's not the same thing.
Hypervoxels is a volumetric rendering engine within Lightwave. Maya doesn't have such a beast.

Fluid effects...uses voxels.....
Soo tell me...Whats the difference between a voxel and a hyper voxel?

On a technical level I don't think there is a difference.
I don't have fluid effects, so I don't know what it's capable of. However, I have the impression that it really only works within it's own environment.
With LW's hypervoxles you basically take the points of a piece of geometry, or in most cases single point polys from a particle generator, and render them volumetrically.
So you're single point can become creepy looking decayed mold, or puffy smoke.
Here's a thread from the LW forum:

Voxel is simply a term that describes a chunk of 3D space, it's a truncation of "volume pixel". The voxels in Fluid Effects are the deliniations of the grid within which the fluid solver works. I don't know a lot about Lightwave's Hypervoxels, but it would to me to be a clever way of optimizing volume-based rendering. While there is nothing to parallel this in Maya, one can achieve similar results using Renderman (of course, you have to write the shaders yourself which is a pain). This was how they did the "disappearing" shots for Hollow Man. Kevin Bacon's flesh, guts, sinews and all the other gruseome stuff were made with a volume shader.

Sooo....Hypervoxels...Are more like a deformer?
"Hypervoxels" are a trademarked name.
Lightwave uses null objects, geometry or particles to place it's effects.
