I am just starting out in rigging in maya. One question that has been bugging me is do I need the UV's laid out before I skin my character? Or can these UV's be laid out afterwards?

As I am not texture artist I am hoping that they don't need to be set out ready for texturing.

If you are just starting out and don't know much about rigging, then I'd layout the UV's first. Otherwise hell no, you can lay out the UV's when ever you want.

You can UV at any time. just use "delete by type -> non deformer history" after that.

Old school... you could plug the newly UV'ed mesh as a shapeOrig connection into the skinned mesh. Should work fine.

thanks guys.

oh by the way, I was going through your CD's on rigging (http://www.fahrenheitdigital.com/) Aaron and that is what made me think about UV. I am trying to apply your workflow on other models to help me learn... slowly it all goes :)
