Hello there, I have a question concerning my model I have been working on. What would be the best approch to UV Mapping this model in 3ds Max 8. This is the first time I have had to UV something as complex as this model. I really dont even know how to approch the problem and any input I can get would be a great help to me.http://theauctiongame.com/daniel/Render/tree.jpg

Is that a tree? Ok, I'm not the best UV person in the world..actually I despise UVing..I bet a lot of people feel the same way...

Here's my advice...

First off, I'm not a Max user. I use Maya though I imagine their UV tools are quite similar as with other 3D programs.

You should organize the model into sections. It'll make UVing a bit easier. I would personally divide the model into branches, trunk, and bottom/roots. Since a tree is basically one big distorted cylinder, it would probably be best to use a cylindrical projection on the trunk, branches, and roots. There will be some stretching in the texture map so you will need to manually edit that by hand. Expect seams where the trunk and roots meet, you can avoid that by cleverly hiding it or better yet, if you have PS3. You can color over the seam since you can now import 3D objects into PS3 to paint.

Good luck!

Basically what he said. Divide the modely by pelt seams, one per root, per branch and for the trunk.
Don't try to keep all in one piece in the unwrap editor as it makes everything more complicated and isn't neede.
Think of unwrapping like reverse building a paper model, once you understood what you actually do, it's more a matter of diligence and time.
