Here is an almost finished Bag End from Lord of the Rings.
I still have a few things to add, then I am going on to texturing.
I used 3dsmax.
All comments are very much appreciated. I want as much feedback as possible before I start texturing

Simply amazing modeling. This will look great when textured. One thing I noticed though is that some of the rolled up manuscripts by the back doorway look like they are floating in air a little. Especially the one on the left hand side.

I think you already nailed the lighting...is almost there. Should be warmer but I already like it.

Are you working with any particular reference? Or just a lot of pictures...

You should make a Day and Night version of this shot...I have the picture "in my mind" of those candles lighting and warming up the scene...nice!!!

...but I just loved this shot...

Another detail...Watch those duplicates candles...looks to simetrical. Some should be burned more...you can work that out with textures later...

Thank you all for the comments.

I used many different refernces, most from the film but also alot from various Tolkein artists.

manutara- The Sunny day will probably be warmer, and doing a night shot is a great idea, something i didnt think about.
Candles glowing, with light from the fireplace I can see it already.
Wait,Wait,Wait....cant think of that now have to texture first.
Good comment on those candles also, having them burned at different lengths is something I did not think of either, but is very important. THANKS

slaughters-I caught the floating scrolls also as I looked at the image more, fixt in the next round.

See comments like these is why I posted here, there is so much to think about with this scene it is easy to miss some great ideas.
Stuff like that will make the image look so much better

Again thanks everyone, and more comments are encouraged.

btw the teapot is VERY noticeable... since the ones in the moofie were very slim and tall.

Looking extremely cool - the atmosphere you have created is looking great
The textures are looking okay so far, maybe a little too new and unworn though. Also, the textures on the ceiling and fireplace look a little blotchy and procedural.
The floor looks great though :D

Yes, very good indeed. I have a few comments though.

The wood in bagend is a little darker actually, knowing how wood darkens through the ages unless using the proper laquer which they didnt have at this age. So darken the wood overall and make some spots a little darker so it will come alive.

Second of all, the stone should be whiter. It's a little to beige now. Here's a picture for you so you know what i mean.
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/kefren/galartvar/Howe/bagend.jpg

And finally you missed the fireplace in the room in the back, where bilbo boils his tea. An image here:

Just to make things clear, your image rocks, this is just suggestions on how I would have made it. Hope you find something useful in what i said. cheers... :)

This is starting to look great. With the monitor Im using at work.
What are the walls suppose to be anyways? plaster, clay, stone.
The wood is looking great from what I can tell.
Just wondering what you are going to do with it once your done?
Maybe a fanfilm? It would be cool.

:bounce: :bounce: This is soo cool! It looks almost perfect, just a few things here and there. Mostly what has already been sugested. I think the plaster on the walls should have a more faned out texture like stucco. Where are you getting the references from?? Does anybody know if there are blueprinte on the internet anywhere??

he is one-hundred and elevensies or something like that, so it should definately look lived in, if your going for an exact replica. it's a great job modeling. my suggestion would be to go for a warm, worn look on the textures.

Thank you everyone for the greast comments.
All comments are very helpful, I need as much as I can get.

I agree that it looks fairly new right now, considering how old Bag End is.
I am going to make it look more lived in with the final, hopefully adding some dust and wornout areas and such.

Lightwave- Thanks for that suggestions on the fireplace back in the Kitchen I have added that, along with numerous of over things I have missed.

Temporal-I sense a CGtalk award for this when it's done
THANKS......That is a huge compliment, and would be awesome.

I am hoping to match colors of the film as close as I can, every monitor I look at this image with I see different things, So it will look different with different monitor calibrations.
I will post my refernce photo when I am finished to show a comparison.

Please keep posted any comment's

Just awesome.
You really know how to stick with something. I am guessing there are just a "few" hours in this scene.

It's an wonderfull job what you've pulled out here. I can see only one thing and that's in the construction of the building. I see you used a bow-construction like they use in a church. Well at the end of the bow there is the point of weight and usely they put an collumn or something like that, to cary that weight otherwise the structure would coalpse.

Still it's a great job...

gr...:)

robertp
04-09-2003, 09:44 PM
Good point but there might be a hidden structure that takes all the weight off of the visible structure. I really wouldn't worry about it.
Visually this is very strong. You might want to think about blackening some parts of the wood and ceiling where the candles are sitting. Over time the soot from the candles would darking those spots ever so slightly unless bilbo had a stepladder to wash the ceilings.
Above the candle on the wall next to the window on the Left side there is a patch of shadow or black. What is that?

Also you might want to change the color of some of those books. If it was a more natural paper it would be more yellow, brown. The only time you would have pure white paper is if you bleached the pulp. And then even with how they lived it would have to have a hint of yellow.
Add something outside too.

Your almost done. Grats.

This really is coming out wonderfully, feels just like the real thing..great stuff.

I agree just a tad more aging or randomness in surfaces would help, more visible in the large image, for instance the mug on the desk..even though he's fastidious and keeps things very clean, just a little bit here and there would lock it all together. Some atmosphere would do too, like in the opening shots, there's always a little smoke or dust to get sunbeams around the windows and such.

Anyway, just little thoughts, you can leave it just like it is and it's still kickass :)

P.S. there's no roof outside to collapse - it's a hobbit hole..I thought everyone on earth had seen fellowship of the ring by now ;)

Just some details:

Move or rotate the furniture, specially the desk. I looks to align. The same for the rug on the floor.

Watch those bricks in the fireplace. The fireplace realy calls the attention and so those textures repetitions.

Apart from the weirdness that manutara has pointed out, I can't see anything really problematic about this scene! :D

I love pics of Frodo and Arwen above the mantlepiece ;)

I really dig the camera angle the most! I swear if this was life size and I was standing in front of it, I'd swear there was some actual depth to this pic, it makes me feel like I'm there. The distance of the kitchen and proportions are spot on. Excellent work

robertp -I was trying to attempt to have the wall be burnt by the candle over to the left.
That is what the black mess is above it. I am not really happy with it, I am going to have to change that.
Thanks for the thought on that comment.

The books are not supposed to have white pages they look white because some lighting issues with those objects.
Good catch also.

Next update I give will more or likely be in the Finished Work section.
So anybody else with any comment please feel free to post.

Very nicely done. Some un-uniform positioning of the furniture would help make it look more lived on though, but I don't want to detract from the excellent quality of the work.. love it!
