View Full Version : The Hapless Villain - Character - Raymonkey

Imagine, if you will, a robot.

A robot designed as the ultimate super-soldier, powered by the ultimate organic matter - brain tissue...

Created by the now sadly deceased evil genius Crabulon, the Nuk-O-Tron 3000 suit was designed to bring to fruition Crabulon's eeevil plan to take over the known universe. The suit was meant to be an extension of the wearer's physical and mental powers - a complex brain transfusion was necessary for Crabulon to take possession of his new suit...and due to a sad (and frankly unlikely) accident involving a packet of Trill, three laboratory monkeys and a pet budgie known by the name of Graham the wrong bits were transfused to the wrong places...Crabulon ended up as part of a new tyre swing and Graham became...

(dan..dan..daaaaa) Commander Budgie-For-A-Brain!!!

Infused with a minor streak of meaness and the tactical ordnance to knock out a medium sized city (Swindon, perhaps) Commander Budgie-For-A-Brain is now a mercenary for hire...that is if you want to hire a merc that has an annoying habit of being distracted from his mission by the slightest hint of a tinkly bell, a lovely shiny mirror, a piece of cuttlefish or a pile of millet...in fact the most eeeevil Command B-F-A-B is likely to get is if you forget to put newspaper down...

And after all that inane preamble...a sketch:

http://www.raymonkey.com/ceri/cgtalk_cbfb.jpg

So, decision is which one of the designs do I go for...or do I just plough ahead knowing full well that I'll probably make it up as I go along anyway :)

Whatever happens I'm going to start building Graham now as he is the only constant...I also need to work out a way of showing his fatal flaw...and possibly some of his weapons...dear oh dear...how long do we have to finish this?

-Ceri

(and if anyone wants to accuse me of "borrowing" heavily from Earthworm Jim and cooking up a story just so as I can build a giant robot...you're dead on the money). :p

How can you not know what a budgie is???? ;)

Surely this is a common house pet the world over...

err...maybe not then...

take a peek here for more info (although why you'd want to is beyond me, they're very dull)

Budgies... (http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/)

See...very unheroic...or villainous....:D

Heheh...parakeet if you please!:) (But thanks for the muffin!)

Right first bit of modelling...more to encourage me to keep updating than anything else:

As you can see Graham is sporting this season's fashionable 192 grey with black lines....

mtmckinley: Thanks!

truk77: Ta. I'm modelling in MAX5, using the old meshtools scripts I used to use in MAX4.

Here's my latest:

Graham is looking a bit more colourful now...on to the suit I think.

Yeehaa! it works really good these textures!

I'm really looking forward for this one! very nice sketch! :)

Nice sketch and storyline. The Modeling is clean and I like the contrast of Parakeet/Robot. And yes somehow, someway you have done well in twisting your story to get a Robot done here. We can never have enough of Earthworm Jim. :)

The textures on him are looking nice, soft,a nice suttle blend. Perhaps very rough rusts and worn armor on the "BOT" portion will really give off a nice contrast.:buttrock:

I'll keep an eye out for your up-dates,this looks promising. So far all is well done, fun and interesting with a nice dash of originality.

Nice work, the texturing really brings it together. The concept reminds me of the Astro character from Toy Story. Well I guess we all look for comparissons, but I have to agree he looks very original concept. Maybe just steer away from plastic robot suit.

Wheeeeeee he's so clean and soft!
I wanna stroke him!
Wanna cracker?

Dshelton: Thanks...I hope I can keep this up :)

Pabbloz: Cheers! I wasn't going to texture him, but I thought it looked loads better...so I'll have to do all of it now I guess.

Virtuoso: Hmmm...rusty..hadn't thought of that as I always imagined it as a brand new suit...but I think a bit of battle damage might be the ticket...I'll see how it goes.

Riki: Any similarity is coincidental I'm sure :) But you know, your unconscious mind always feeds in stuff from somewhere! Yeah, I think I will keep clear of the shiny plastic look.

Nibo: :D Don't distract the evil Budgie with crackers!

Right, started massing out the suit to get the proportions right before I go in and start modeling loads of detail into it:

make the suit smaller as in your drawings, the bird is getting no attention in this suit.:wip:

It will look great!! Nice workflow! keep working and I would like you keep the modelling close the sketch because I really like it! :)
By the way... I've seen you stuff... you're now my favourite artist! really awesome! ;)

I fully agree!
The proportions of your drawing are exactly the right ones!

....you sure you don't wanna cracker??....

Great idea and wicked model so far.

I do agree with the previous posts about keeping the proprtions of the original concepts.

I also think that the budgie is such an unusual part of the mix that maybe there should be other areas of the robot that show it off.
I would love to see little budgie feet poking out halfway down the suit perhaps, or maybe some feathers poking through joints.

Something to emphasise that this amalgamtion of characters was by accident rather than design.

Fantastic idea though, I'm still giggling.

Yir! really nice work! Though i agree with the other guys about the size of the suit and the head... :)

pabbloz: Awww...shucks....

Just a teeny update today...started getting the upper suit sorted...lots of detailing left to go though :wip:

Changed the proportions again...you were all right, Graham was too small in the last one.

http://www.raymonkey.com/ceri/cgtalk_updt3.jpg

I don't want to make him too big as this suit was designed for a human sized person...and I think it looks amusing if Graham is a little incongruous in it..but I think this is closer to the original.

and for the last time nibo...no crackers! :D

Kenneth: Cheers fella!

Edouard: Glad you like these proportions better! - I do too.

Here's another update:

Just messing with his legs, still more to go...just wondering whether I can be bothered to create proper pistons...:wip: :)

pabbloz

wow! very detailled! well done!

Keep working! ;)

Raymonkey
04-09-2003, 11:49 PM
Well...still going...:wip:

(Which surprises me as much as anyone else :p)

Another quickie...more legs I'm afraid...I hope to get the main carapace done before the weekend.

http://www.raymonkey.com/ceri/cgtalk_updt5.jpg

I did make some pistons...but they are more for show than anything else...although the knee joints look cool when animated.

I REALLY like the suit, but not the budgie...
put a monkey in it, or a worm (oops, watched Eart Worm Jim too much ;))
I mean...the bufgie doesn't fit the suit well...

Very nice, but I really am probably the only one but,I would like to see the Bird larger, too small. It is very well modeled, but it would be nice to see how he operates the machine/robot?
Still I like the machine and bird very much.

mfunk
04-11-2003, 02:28 PM
It will be interesting to see how it moves.
A big robot moving in a budgie type way plus the little head being very alert inside.
I think it would be pointless to show how the budgie works the robot. It's not needed at all.
Great idea - keep posting with your updates.

I agree with Janhath. It would be great to see a strange type cockpit or control center,to see how the bird controls the mech. I think it's far from pointless,in fact very essential.I dissagree mfunk. The easy way out is to "NOT SHOW" the bird controlling the mech.
How is that pointless?
Well it's nice to have opinions, still the characters look good.:)

Thanks for the comments guys!

Dreamwave: Aww...but its a lovely ickle birdie. Heh, I "borrowed" the idea from Earthworm Jim so definitely no worms! And monkeys are too cool. The point is a super villain with a flaw...and budgies are pretty stooopid so it was the right flaw for me...and it kinda isn't supposed to fit the suit on that basis - it was designed for a man after all.

Gremlin: Thanks...although I expect the detail will kick me in the butt when it comes to texturing :)

janhath: Still not finalised the size of the bird, but I doubt he'll get much bigger.

mfunk: Blooming heck...animate it as well...arrrgh  I may have to pass that over to someone else...but great suggestion on movement though.

Redf: Heh heh - seeing the budgie control the robot eh? Hmmm...well according to my original story it is really only the brain of the budgie that is controlling the suit...so I don't think I'm going to model any strange control mechanisms. I'm not sure its the easy way out...if I had taken that I would have not shown the bird at all and claimed it was a total brain transplant like Kain from Robocop 2....euuugh...bad movie....

Anyway, on with the update:

Coming along quite nicely Raymonkey...........

I think if you go that extra mile in texturing it will become a real visual treat. The more intricate you go with the details the better too I always say.;)

As for the budgie that is controlling the suit..............Brain power you say ............Well I think then you should portray this. Perhaps a small head set and or gadgets atop the lil' birds head, showing a connection to the machine.Perhaps a few wires that connect from the head set to the machine? Well something along these lines,I will leave this to you, just a thought to help out if possible.:)

I look forward to what you have in mind,it's fun thus far,and quite creative, good work, one of my fav's for sure.

Ok... I have to write and tell you. Your idea by FAR is the funniest one this challenge. Everytime I look at it I laugh. Its PERFECT. The model looks great, the design and idea are great.

Top marks dude. Top marks.

Thats fantastic, its the best Budgie Automaton I've ever seen.

Cant wait to see it move.

Will Geoff Capes be involved, He is a massive (no pun intended) Budgie breeder. It would be great to see some feedback from him.

Thanks for the comments (and the votes!)

I'm gutted that I didn't manage to finish this within the deadline - but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I got the opportunity to do some work with Passion Pictures that I couldn't really turn down :p

However, rest assured I'll post a completed version as soon as I get five minutes to myself - and maybe even get him animated...although I don't think I'll get Geoff Capes modelled in time :D

(Oh and Nibo....birdseed....mmmmmm... )
