View Full Version : better poly counter
Krystman 03-28-2003, 05:55 PM Hi people!
I was just asking myself if there is somwhere a polycounter that counts tris instead of polys. It kinda sucks that when I model something in low poly with a fixed budged, i have to convert the whole thing to a mesh in order to find out the tricount.
Has anyone seen something like that?

well you could try out a little program called wings 3d..very cool little program that you can import your 3ds files into...it will remain in quads when imported into wings...and that program has a little counter at the top when you element select your model and it should display a face and edgde count..(prety soon im sure youll want to model with it its a great lopolymodeler!!)..and i think an edge count is what your looking for..hope it helps a little..http://www.wings3d.com/
if your modeling in pure quads then just multiply x2 to get the tri count :)

I wrote myself a script a while back for just this purpose. It counts the number of tris in the selected object and prints it to the status line. You're welcome to try it out:

The file->summary info shows faces.. but that might not be what you're looking for...

Hey LFShade, I tried your cleancut script as well, but I got this error message. If I close the message the tool seems to work fine. Is this something that I should worry about.
(I use MAX5 btw)

dogz - *lol* Tnaks but I didn't realy want to get in another package just because of this litte unconvienience...
halo - shure  but this is only true if I work in quads only.. and I don't...
.oO-cloak-Oo. - ;)
Hydra - nope.. this again shows the polycount, not the tricount
LFShade - Has anybody told you yet that you are a god? Bacause you are...:wavey:

You can alo hit 7 to get the polyocunter in the viewport and add a meshselect modifier on top of the stack, hit show end result and you get the correct tri-count.
Doesn't the polycounter in the utilities menu show correct number of faces too?

The polygon counter from the utility panel shows the number of triangles. It's a floater, so I usually move it completely to the left of my screen with only a small part still visible (the part with the numbers).

err? Well, in MY version of 3ds max (4.2), it counts polys, not tris.. I never seen a version wich would count tris....:surprised
