At first I wanted to say hello to everybody, it`s my first time on this board and its exciting challenges
I saw all the outstanding works here and now I decided it is time to join this community
well here`s how I started this thing, not really a professional way to start an image but I just played around a bit until I knew where I would go

at this stage I`m quite sure to go after some weird Alice piece with strange characters and their strange behaviors, perhaps I`ll change the hole setting in the next 82 days but right now I`m starting to have a lil fun with this

well that`s how far I am, the story gets more concrete but I`m not sure about the composition
the scene shows Humpty Dumpty at a rendevouz with Alice in the smoking caterpillars Opium-bar
her personality is split into 2 persons in this scene but they are shown as seamese twins cause after all they belong together
I`m not so sure about the format and color, feedback is much appreciated

had some other concept ideas for the theme , hope to get some feedback on these:
the first one is about a little robogirl who don`t know that she is one
designed to be the perfect child and equipped with an emotion-chip she`s living many years with her "parents"...until the day when she wakes up next to some old robots at the garbage dump, which have never seen a crying synthetic before

Firstly, I'll say that both concepts are very well painted, you clearly have talent there. As for the ideas themselves, I don't think either lends themselves well to this competiton. I like the robot idea more, but unless I read your whole description after it I would have had no idea thats what its about.
If you want to display a child discovering she is part robot, maybe a better way would be to show her in a situation that would normally reveal out own inner workings. I'm personally not sure how to accomplish that without going into gory details, but maybe thats a solution. I just think it needs to be more convincing and more startling to the child than staring at her arm without skin.

thx for the answer, double thank you for its constructive nature ;)
I`m afraid you`re right with the robogirl; I guess this is the hardest part making the picture work without explaining the story
the Alice piece could work imo cause I can already see all the missing stuff I want to add; I´ll finish it anyway but I think I want to play around with some different ideas for this competition

hey there! first, let me say that the paint work is fantastic! very moody and almost ethereal. However, I will have to agree with Killer-Instinct93 in that the composition is somewhat vague in terms of strange behaviour. I think its a great idea, a robot finding out she's a robot, not to mention her parents watching her cry. Which got me thinking - what the image was restructured as a closeup of the parent and the robogirl, the girl crying as though normal (with hints here and there she's a robot) and the parent, rather than trying to comfort her , is staring in utter surprise (bewilderment?) that she is crying. I mean, it's truly is a great storyline, but I think that can be solved with this or other compositioning. Otherwise, great work!

thx for the feedback, played already around with the theme in a similar direction
like you mentioned it shows the little robot with her parents which have lost their real daughter, but in this scene they are crying while the robot is slowly going to freak out because of the flood of emotions (it is going to pull the dolls head of and sparks flying from its head...
well its a very fast sketch, I guess I`ll play around with different stuff

played around a bit with another idea: roleplaying fantasy creatures
the only question now is: are Orks playing "Dungeons & Dragons" against human opponents or shall I paint a group of orks playing something like "Lawyers & Courts"??

Hey you got great painting skills! this last color test has a Rembrendtish quality in it.. As far as your concept I think you should do both! Orks playing lawyer&court chess against barbarian humans. Who knows maybe that is the punishment of one side to the other, or what they chose to do instead of warring? Anyway, nice job keep it up!

thx for the comments guys
I`ve pushed this a bit further, still not sure about the size of the scene I want to show; just 3 orkze or a bigger group surrounding them? I guess I`ll show more of the desk so I`ll zoom out the point of view a bit...what do you think?

After I`ve seen that my idea was too similar to Walrus work I`ve changed the concept for the orcs a bit:
now I`ll show what they`re doing when fighting is over: they`re having a tea-party inside their save orclair with everything you need for such an event like a teaservice, cake and cupcakes, one orc is knitting, one is nipping from his cup and another one is making smalltalk...

thx for all the kind words, makes me a warm feeling in my belly
here`s a recent wip, the roleplay table is gone, a small petite one has come
the orc on the left side hasn`t got his knitting stuff yet and also most elements on the table are missing that mekes a teaparty what it is...but thats the fun to add all this little details like teaservice, cupcakes and lots of dollies and teddybears around them^^
hope the picture gets as funny and strange as I imagine this hole scene

Hey, Mathias, it's looking great. Thanks for steering away from the idea closer to mine, but at least it doesn't look like you have any shortage of good ideas to draw from! :) This is looking really nice. The hand doesn't quite match the face yet, but I suspect you're working from your own or a freiend's human hand at first and will make it look more ogrey as you go. Anyhow, great lighting and wrinklage so far, looking forward to seeing what else you add.. good luck!

I had to join this thread. U have a great start going on here and a very interesting technique of creating an image, not acctually knowing what will happened next. As walrus said already, the hand is a bit strange at the moment, but I see its in the middle of process. One another thing I would pointed out is, that the right character is just perfect with expression and everything, but the left one seems to be a bit stiff at the moment. Or it is just his nose that is a bit off... just a suggestion or at least something I found worth mentioning it. great job so far!

you pointed good out how I work; mostly I don`t have too concrete sketches which is really annoying when I have to do something fast for a company

you`re a talented guy Jassar, give yourself one year full of training and painting and you`ll be surprised what you can do then...you should see the first wacom works I did 2 years back...or better don`t look at it^^
however here´s a new wip, this time I tried to vary the format and added a few details
what do you think about this format?

haha, very nice :) I like the concept. I think the format is great; the table is very small, maybe you should plan to do the monsters squatting on their haunches or raise the ground of the puppets. Anyway I like the painting, good work !

Your picture has a fantastic mood.
I am afraid to mention it as you look along way along with your painting, but I wonder would it be too much of a cliche if the orc on the left side was pouring tea from the teapot into the cup held by the other orc? This might make it clearer that the orcs are part of the teaparty, rather than just being curious about something they have found.

Amazing!! One of my favourites.

Hey Mathias, thats great!!, i like a lot your lighting and the bunny and the doll are a cool detail! great!! . I think the orc holding the tea cup has well care nails, maybe that is the idea :D . This is by far the best piece i've seen in this challenge so far, i was looking at your portfolio and it's seems that with this piece you pushed yourself to a way higher level in painting skills, the whole mood, colors, faces are just brilliant, try not to get the composition too busy with unnecessary details tough. The rabbit needs a small perspective change, this piece smells first place to me, keep it up.

Hey, this is one of my favorite strange behaivor entries !! nice job
his left had doesn't look as good as the rest of the picture.... let me give you an example. Their faces and cloths are all scarred and haggard, wrinkles everywhere, showing wear and tear... however his hand is very smooth and almost manicured ..... that in itself is strange behaivor for these guys. it would look cooler to have this massive scarred dirtied grotesque hand holding a dainty tea cup with his pinky extended skyward.
great painting.!

09-16-2007, 07:29 PM
Overall, I think the left Orc's face and his hand are working very well. The center of the mouth is pretty hard to read - does he have a nose-ring there? It's getting hard to deiscern between the nose-ring and all of the jaggedy teeth, and all of that noise might be a bit more than is necessary for that area to read.
Also, it's hard to tell where he's looking. He doesn't appear to be watching the tea that he's pouring, and instead it look like he's looking off into the distance on the right. Maybe a little more clarity in the direction fot eh eyes could help. I can imagine it's a tough balance, given that they're not traditional eye colors.
The added yellowing on the dolls, especially the right one, really helps a lot to integrate the scene. The Right orc's hand could use a similar touch - its skin doesn't seem the same on his hand as on his face.
Anyhow, great progress on this... good luck with the rest!

Congratulations on a stunning painting. There are so many positive things about this painting - brush work, lighting, colour are all supporting a great concept. There are just a couple of things which are niggling my eye. The orc's face on the left - i think one can see too much of the right side of its face, especially the eye and the mouth. From that angle it seems to indicate more of a three-quarters view wereas the eye and mouth seem to be closer to a frontal view? Is the hand of the orc on the right a little too large? The only other thing is that the characters seems to be all looking out at the viewer - maybe adjusting the toys view would increase the interest? Have considered adding a third orc to the right - compositionally three would be stronger than two - perhaps the third could be looking over the should of the middle one - or more in the back waiting until they finish thier tea? There is large empty space at the front of ther composition which needs something - maybe a orc pet under the table? And/or more cuddly toys with there backs to the viewer.
I really love the concept and its got me thinking about the story - so hope you dont mind if I tell you what the scene suggests to me. I wondered about how you are going to develop the theme further - some other delicacies would look good on the table - such as dainty biscuits. Also thought that it would be nice to see some tea dribbling from the orcs mouth to show its lack of decorum. I like the idea of adding armour and weapons in the back scene which maybe suggests they are having tea before they go into battle - maybe they could be in a tent and you could indicate the orc hoards getting battle ready through a slit in the tent.
Apologies for going on a bit but I cant help it as I really like your painting!

here`s a very fast test for the composition; I`ve tried out some variations with more space around the scene but I like it this way the most: concentrated on this little teaparty, the orcs in the scene as huge as possible to show how small and petite all the puppet-stuff around is

I like the development here, its really interesting to look at and holds your attention with the addtion of the other toys and items on the table. It is really working well even though it is a busy composition with not too space/background as it keeps it intimate which supports the mood entirely (you mentioned about extending the canvas which may take away the intimacy I think). The hand holding the plate of cookies looks a bit odd to me at the moment, not because it unrendered, but it just seems a bit disconected from whats going on and its taking the focus away a little from the orcs for me. Anyway its really looking great - keep going!

amazing work! i love the colorscene-atmospher. keep it up! but i do have one question-remark, that what do you think about the right side hand thats holding the tee cup - is it mayby to human like. its amazing what you have done with the orc-s heads, mayby the center tee-cup hand could be also more like orc-ish or so? ofcourse it can make the picture a littel bit too messy but just a side remark. im new so dont hold a grudge! Great work and best luck! :) cheers!...for the hord!! :D

I`m glad that you all dig the composition even it`s very busy, I had my doubts on it but now I see the light at the end of the tunnel
Subha, you have a special talent to point exactly out what bothers myself the most on this piece^^ I have no solution for this problem but I definately have to change this hand, maybe I`ll replace it or reduce the light on it
gingi, I always wanted to overwork this hand to make it look more orcish, just have to give myself a kick in my lazy bump

Yep, No original words from me, just great work!NIce colors, and nice/busy composition which is just as SAbha pointed it out, warm and intimacy!
Also agree with you and Sabha for the hand but when I see your skills no worry about it!This will totaly rock!
So just great!
Cheers!
The hand is a little distracting but only because it's not finished yet. The truth of the matter is Mathias, that hand is probably the thing that ties together the strange scene and is actually what makes the event intimate. That hand shows the care and love of the orc and he is serving the other with tea and cookies. Even though there are cookies on the table already, that hand around and behind the other orc plays a great role in the theme on a whole (a kind and gentle orc - that's priceless). You really just need to push the hand into the background. Take it out of the mid ground and let your light sculpt it gently enough to make it recognizable but not distracting. But that hand is a powerful part of your image, don't lose it.

theres just one thing tho .. i think mike must've mentioned it ... but the orc who's holding the tea cup .. his hand looks a little human .. as compared to the other orc's hand ..

It has been a while since I last came here, and this piece is just getting better and better.
I agree in full with Huin about the background hand, it needs to be there, it really drives home the orc's attitude.

wellwellwell...contest is ending soon and my motivation to work on this picture is slightly decreasing; two good reasons to finish this piece fast
here`s a little update, mostly detailing out the stuff on the table and the pets
the biggest change with this update I guess is the second cat which replaced the plate with cookies
I think it makes the pic more alive and tracks the viewer back into the scene (at least I hope so)
more flowers will follow on the table; the one which is already there is finished for me, also the sugar cup and the tea cup more or less
hope to get some feedback on this also
cheers,
Mathias
PS.:thx for all the positive feedback, it encourages me more to work on than anything else right now^^

Wow, really stunning. Love the addition of the second cat this is a really nice addition and adds a further dimension to the story while strengthening the compostion I think. No other cc just to say look forward to seeing the hands compeleted. Brilliant.
Well Mathias, to be honest... Like any picture you can keep adding and adding and adding without end. On a whole, this piece is complete, you can't possibly see how you would bring the painting to life anymore. The only thing you can do now is nitpick at things that bug you or add tiny details no one will probably ever see till 5 years later...hahaha. Just close the painting. Search hard and close-up for anything that sticks out at hi-res (which we will never see) or needs cleaning up and just get them done. Your painting to me is complete and says all that needs to be said and then some (poor kitty:twisted: ) I personally like the expressive/unrefined textures.. it adds what I will call "painterly depth" :D If it isn't tightly painted, no need to look there, stepping out of focus!:)
Fantastic job Mathias, really great work! Honored having been able to follow your thread:thumbsup:
My best wishes!

Hey Mathias, your refinement is fabulous and I hope you can finish this to your satisfaction in the time left.
I feel a bit of a pooh saying this at this point, but I am not too keen on the hand at the top right. I always thought the strange behaviour here is that the orcs are having a cheerful tea party, but the cat being held doesn't look too comfortable and seems to me like he is being deliberatley held away - to me it's almost like the orcs have gate-crashed the teaparty and are monopolising it.
I realise you are looking for a solution on how to work the left arm and hand of the orc on the left into the picture, especially as he is so close to the orc on the right. To keep the scene intimate and within the strange behaviour theme, have you thought perhaps he could have his arm around the shoulders of the other orc in a brotherly fashion - you would then see his left hand on the left shoulder of the orc on the right?
As it is currently, the composition of your piece seems to me to be almost circular, with the only thing breaking outside that circle being the hand holding the cat, which I think gives it unnecessary focus - with his hand on the shoulder of the other orc, that circle would be maintained, and even perhaps reinforced, especially with the added bonhommie.
So that is just my own opinion, and as usual I feel a little nervous about giving it about something so close to someone else. I hope you can come to a solution you are happy with. It is a splendid picture.

OMG!! THIS IS AWESOME!... wow... I totally love this idea... im just in awe seeing this monsters having tea with those cute little things... its an amazing blend of 2 of my favotire genres... great job... If i may say something at this stage then that wud be the head of the monkey (the big one) in the lower left corner seems a bit off perspective. but i'm sure ur gonna fix that anywas (just trying my very best and hard to crit here) ... orrite man... keep up the best work.

thank you very much Subha, I`m glad you like the little pussy ;)
Hiun you`re right my friend, I never really know when I should stop a painting; when I`ve spent so much time on a picture I want it as good as I can do...I`ll try to finish this as soon as possible without destroying the painterly depth :D thank you for your motivating words
hey Ordibble, thx for taking the time to write this down; you have a good eye man
I`ve tried to save the circular composition with the replacement of the cookies with the bent kitty
I definately see your point with the pose of the hand you suggested, the comp would definately be more homogen without the cat
it will be a tough decision cause I like this cat quite much at the moment; it would definately make the piece more peacefull if I wrap the left orcs hand cheerfull around the rights shoulder
but the cat is another factor that makes the right orc feeling uncomfortable in this scene while the left one seems to like this whole circumstances
I have something in mind like the cat was crawling on the right orcs head and the other one puts it away with this "oh how cute"-smile (I`ll add a strain of hair which the cats paw is holding...)
hey overcontrast, thx for looking (and for the wow^^) yeah this damn monkey makes a monkey out of me, I have to fix him
cheers,
Mathias

No doubt that cat is a cutey, and looking at your picture again there certainly is a hole in the upper right hand side that needs something in it.
I suppose what was bothering me most was the thrusting action of the orc's hand. The cat's shape follows the circular composition, but the arc of the orc's arm/wrist/hand goes in the opposite direction, breaking the flow, which to me seemed to make it stand out. But now I have looked too long and can't tell anymore - others seem to like it, so maybe I was looking for symmetry where it isn't necessary.
Just maybe if it isn't too much work, you could try seeing how it looks with the wrist bending in the same direction as the circular flow (inwards rather than outwards) - this might bring the cat down a bit and into the scene rather than pushing him away.
The cat playing with a strand of hair is a great idea and would really integrate the elements.

Hey Mathias! Everything goes really superb. The progress is so cheerful. Details are all in their proper places, they are not more and if you'd like to add new details they won't be more too. Because all of them supports the concept and the alteration of the plate with cookies to that cute confused cub is very conspicuous. Keep up this amazing work! Cheers Mathias!

It's looking terrific, Mathias! I love all of teh kittens, and especially the dolls in the lower right. (What a happy face the furthest lower right one has!) The only thing left really is to refine all of the details, especially the ones closer to the center of the image, like the cat and the china. Some of the china is working quite well: The pieces with the strong specular hilights really read as china, but the ones lacking that feel a bit too matte. Easily fixable with a few white dots, though! :)
Anyhow, don't flag in the enthusiasm - surely you can hold out 2 2 more weeks or so, right? Good luck!

I come very late in here and so I just discovered your piece. That's so so funny !
Personally, I like the light and the orc's faces ! The best thing of the picture (for me) is the way the one on the right is holding his cup ! So delicately.... :-)
I must confess that I'm not disturbed by the pink sweets, 'cause it remind the games of little girls... We are almost at tea time between Alice and the madhatter in Alice in Wonderland. Visually, I don't see anything wrong with it but it is only my feeling ! :-)
I look forward seing the final piece, with the way you will handled the soft toys and dolls on the corners !

Looks great, Mathias! Congratulations on finishing! All of the areas that I was still wondering about have been very nicely refined... tha armor, the hands, the ceramic, the paws and other details on that lower kitten... And lots of really nice other details too, like the kitten playing with the hair, the daisies in the upper left, nice metallic texture accents on the servingware... I still miss the original doll from the lower right with her happy eyes - you said you'd put her back in! - but aside from that, no complaints here. Didn't you say you were off to Japan now or somehting like that? Welll have a great trip, and rest easy knowing you've finished a great piece!

"For 500 years the orcish race suffered from slavery and depression. Subjugated by the cruel humans the orcs waited for the moment to rebel against their hairless masters and to rise up to the top of society again.
After the great war was won, the orcs started to create the foundation for an advanced cilvilization of their own.
On their way they assimilated many old traditions of mankind and so it comes that scenes like this can be found everywhere in the huge kingdom of the orcs"
well, I know it won`t win a price for literature but I hope it makes the background clearer (not hard to get the point for this picture at all^^)

Depressingly great and gorgeously cute. I would say this nails the brief perfectly, but I saw two Trolls in Starbucks yesterday with mocha's and muffins so perhaps it isn't so strange after all... ;)
Seriously..wicked!

This pic is wonderful! Not only does it have a beautiful element of humour in there, but the detail is wonderful and so clever in the way it's been put together. If we're to expect the next one even better as you say, then the quality of these contests is really going to lift the roof. Congrats to you for your win!
