View Full Version : UGAC - II - Dr. Grübens

Hello everyone!

First post :). I've been working with my story of a scientist named Dr. Grübens who was exposed to some seriously potent space radiation because of a lab test gone wrong. Fortunately the poor professor didn't die - although the radiation changed his physical appearance to hideous monkey like creature the radiation also awakened an ancient human genus and gave him superhuman powers!... Now the former professor of chemistry is an intergalactic superhero!

Since I've been troubled with sluggish internet connection I haven't been able to post wip pictures so here are some. I already have some initial texturing done on his equipment and the gun so I should finish this in time. He is going to be a lowpoly character only using diffuse / alpha maps. I'll post the concept tomorrow when I get my damn internet connection working properly again. Hopefully my images will work. :(

Hiyas!

Thank you all for the heart warming comments. Time for an update. I finished most of the clothes, but I've still got minor things to do in the back. I'll probably finish them tomorrow and start texturing the musket and the pistol. Well... I'm not completely satisfied with some parts at the moment but time is running out. And today I wasn't that much impressed with my concept piece so I'll have to make it abit better before I posting it here... talking about annoyning habits of hysterical perfectionism. :) The UV layout was very quick... Anyway here are some recent max renders, 100% illuminated material and some minor tweaks in photoshop to please the eye. I'll post the ready flats next time.

Damn! nice update man! get it finished soon! I wanna see that longrifle textured and he seems to be missing his sidearm too. That blue/brown/metal color theme rocks!

It looks really lowpoly (I likes =), how many tris are there?

Ok some updates: I finished both the musket and the equipment. Musket texture was really rushed (about 5-6h)so it has some minor(or major) faults. Pics are just basic max screencaps with a alpha masked plane for shadows. The model itself has 400 tris and it was really pain in the ass to texture because of crappy modeling. Well... anyway here a some pics.

Great character and tight work on textures . He could benefit from actual eyes but since he'll be wearing glasses i guess it's no big deal.

Ok more updates done in the last few days. These texture are mostly hand painted and few metal scratch base overlays for minor details. I like to leave it sometimes abit loose to avoid the awkward noise mushines that overly detailed pieces sometimes do. Thanks again all for the comments. Gotta tighten my UV layouts somewhat. :)

Here is the a plutonium powered blaster for the holster and a wip texture for it.

And the equipment textures:

Actually the whole body aswell is finished. I'll post that tomorrow so I will have more dramatic updates on this topic. :)

Gun is ready. Oh crap. Some seams are visible and probably won't fix em. Time to wrap this thing up... 640 tris.

Here are some concept art cleaned for portfolio purposes (about 1h each). I kinda kept them loose to avoid over doing everything which I usually end up with paintings. You can easily get stuck with details which isn't really a bad thing when you are texturing but with a painting is a different thing me thinks.

I still have to clean up the main concept before posting it here. :) And I still haven't baked all of the AO passes as you can probably notice. Hmm... the stand probably needs a small twig or some growth too, but I have no idea how to do them properly... I have to rely on the good ole' trial and error I guess. :)

edit. sharpened concept pics abit.

Great Ideas!

I wonder why you have painted the specular reflections? Wouldn't it better to make a seperate Specular Mask?
