View Full Version : mocap in c4d
sketchbook 08-06-2007, 02:43 PM Hello all,
i am about to do a motion capture session for a project i am working on.
anything i should know about the data, or how to bring it into cinema? is there a specific way i should save the data?
i am also going to be using 3ds studio for much of this project - which i'd guess is more the norm.
thanks!

nobody? here's gotta be someone who has done mocap with c4d yeah?
thanks
CINEMA 4D supports the two major Mocap fileformats FBX and BVH. Very likely FBX is the best choice for you.

thanks srek!
I just finished a project where i used motion builder mocap and c4d to animate 35 characters.
I found that the best method was to use bones. There is an old motion builder 5 rig floating around the board, that is setup already with all the correct naming conventions. I used this rig without any problems what so ever.
The way i did it was to unfix the bones first. Then in order to resize the bones correctly i used the scale tool instead of the bone tool to fit the bones in the mesh.
One method for creating claude bonet maps quickly that Ollie showed me is, after you get the bones situated where you want them, turn off "Absolute Vertex Maps" and turn on "Limit range". Then set the envelopes. Fix the bones and then export using .fbx 5 exporter. Then reimport that same scene and all the weights will be automatically painted. A huge timesaver and a priceless tip.
If you're going to have more than one character in a scene imported from motion builder, be sure to first rename the character null before importing, or else any character null named "Reference" will be overwritten.
Also i found it best to edit the animation in MB before importing into cinema 4d. Its possible to edit in cinema 4d, but it is much faster in motion builder.

Can FBX or BVH be converted to Joints?
I believe they can and it will keep the same keys. If not, then You can Simple Convert to Joints, and have the default Heirarchy and use the ReTarget Tag on the Joints. I unfortunitely don't have any Mocap Data to use.
