Is it possible to access the render settings through xpresso? I'd like to be able to toggle on/off settings like AO, Effects, etc, through the HUD.

No, these are not available through Xpresso. The reason for this is that Xpresso is evaluated at rendertime and the rendersettings are not allowed to be modified during rendering.
