Hi...This is my first time to try to make my character using Houdini. I grab the screen to make this picture. :p This is a WIP.
using Houdini SubD and Nurbs.
C & C are welcomed..:p :p Thx!

the profile looks pretty good, but the straight on view looks odd.

:p My father said this too.:D
Maybe next time I'll try to use refernces.:p
It's alway so hard for me to imagine and model a character without sketching. :p :wavey:

:p That's my first try on Houdini 5.5. I notice the face is so dumpy too. I trying to fix it. But, I still can't. I use Poly->SubD.
The split style of the polygons dumpy section of the face are like below:

--------------------------------
| | dump |_______
| | |
--------------------------------
| | dump |________
| | |
--------------------------------
| | dump |________
| | |
--------------------------------

I used to model in Maya and Lightwave, and these tools's SubD smooth that kind of polygons very well.
But in Houdini..
I wish any Houdini Rockers could help me with this. :wip:
I sorry for my bad english~~:p

Try rendering as a subdivision surface rather than subdividing the surface. Take a look at the render tab in your OBJ parameters.

Good work so far.

Thanks for your suggestion,MCronin.
Changing the render parameter means I should render the model using renderman or mantra then I can see the result?
Can I make my model looks nice and smooth directly from my viewpot?:p
And next time when I use snap tool to snap my screen, I can get a picture of a smooth model.
I am compeletly new to Houdini~~ :D

Hi there

Thats a nice model for a Houdini newbie :). Normally it takes people a while.

As for the subd questions. Houdini uses the pixar method (catmull-clark I believe) of generating a subdivided surface.
From what I know of max and lightwave (and even Maya), they have an approximation of subD but its not the true method. I'm not dissing anyones method, merely pointing out the differences.

So in the houdini way, it will handle 5 sided poly's with no problem, but you'll need to subdivide at a higher level to get them smooth.

But, having said that... with all subdivision modeling you should try and avoid anything other than quads as much as possible. The reason for this is that they generate unpredictable results when deforming. If you follow the general guidlines for subd modeling then Houdini will return results as good as any other package.

In fact Houdini handles N sided poly's better than any other package I've seen...

Cheers
Marc
