View Full Version : Vista and user files
I've recently bought a new computer, with Windows Vista installed. I thought it's all the same as Windows XP as far as file paths and what not. It is appearing that it is not, at least as far as the file paths go and where the user files are located.
In XP, the file path to the Corel user files look something like this "C:/User/Documents and settings/Application Data/Corel/Painter". As far as I can tell, there is no similar path in Vista, unless of course, I'm doing something real stupit. (Not all that unlikely. I do have my senior moments)
Any thoughts anyone on the syntax for the Corel Painter and Vista user files locations.

Hi Tom,
In WinXP Home, Documents and Settings comes before [User Name]. Let's hope that's enough to get you on the right path, so to speak. ;)
Default path to the Painter X User folder (and on to the Workspace folder):
Mac - Users > [User Name] > Library > Application Support > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name]
Windows (at least in WinXP Home SP2) - Documents and Settings > [User Name] > Application Data > Corel > Painter X > [Workspace Name]
Or...
Is it possible your Painter X User folder is hidden in Vista like it has been for some Painter IX and Painter X users in WinXP?
If so, the only instructions I can give you are for WinXP Home SP2 but maybe you can use them in, or translate them for, Vista:
In Windows Explorer, highlight Documents and Settings (if it's there and hopefully it is):
1. Click the Tools menu.
2. Click Folder Options...
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings panel, scroll down to Hidden files and folders and check the Show hidden files and folders radio button.
5. Click the OK button to close the Folder Options dialog box.
Why, dear neighbor, did you move to Vista?
Whatever the reason, I wish you the best and will count on you to bail me out when I'm forced to use Vista.
Keeping my fingers crossed,
Jin
Hi Jin,
I solved the problem, and it turned out to be the "Hide files" thing.
I can't blame Vista for this, I was my own undoing here. I've used XP for years and had changed my preferences years ago and forgot all about it.
The differences between Vista and XP are not all that great, just minor syntax stuff when looking up a file's path in reference to the above.
In the main, I really like Vista, just needs a little getting used to. So did Windows 3 when I was used to DOS. Old Dog and new tricks and all that. Thanks for the help.
By the way, the reason for going to a Vista system instead of sticking with XP is that my new computer came with it. I don't know if I would upgrade on my old computer, but sure do like it on my new one.

Hi Tom,
I'm glad the fix was that simple.
Also happy to hear you're liking Vista since you come from the same OS version I'm using and use Painter, and that gives me some hope.
If I have to replace my computer, I'll try for one with XP on it since I have so many older Painter versions installed that might not work at all on Vista.
Microcenter told me the other day they could put one together for me with all the processor speed and RAM I need, and with XP installed. Now to find the money! ;)
Cheers!

If you prefer XP to Vista, many places such as tigerdirect.com still have windows xp for sale by itself. I'm in the same boat as you and was thinking of buying xp home now just so that I have it in 6 months when I get the new computer.
I'll be interested in Vista when the OS is 64 bit, all the drivers are 64 bit, and all the software is 64 bit. Oh-and when Service Patch 5 has been released.
I can wait! :-)

Hi Improv,
Thanks for that info. It's good to know there are other places to purchase WinXP.

If I had requirements for huge amounts of memory, then maybe I'd switch to Vista right now. But I don't. I also suspect that the major software out there (all types) won't have a 64 bit version for Vista for a year or two. If you use Vista now, most of your software is still 32 bit, so any gain is very small.
Plus there are the usual problems with a new Windows that won't be ironed out for a couple fo service packs.
When Corel announces a 64 bit version of Painter, I might think about it . Til then I'll let the early adaptors be first on their block to get Vista, I can wait...
