why hooray? they aren't good enough to produce their own chips anymore...

I don't think nvidia ever had their own chip manufacturing plant. It's too expensive to have your own unless you make alot of chips for multiple markets(4 billion to build a chip manufacturing plant). IBM made chips for AMD and Cyrix in the past and they make their own chips for their servers plus the Gamecube and the future PS3.
