Title: Embryo III
Name: Steve Barrett
Country: USA
Software: BodyPaint, CINEMA 4D, Modo, Photoshop, Poser
This is an experimental piece that I created using various 3D software. I have always enjoyed creating figurative work.
My ideas usually start in my sketchbook on my morning BART train ride to San Francisco. I develop the ideas directly in 3D software and Photoshop. I equate the process to watercolor or mixed media painting.I enjoy playing around with various digital processes, because I learn something new every time.
Since I am a professional creative retoucher, I finish my work in Photoshop.
Any comments are welcome.

Well I know Conservatives will like this one :P
I doubt that was the point you were trying to make, but I like the idea if its not. Other than the image being pretty empty I think its well done.

It's a nice concept, I should tell that I find the picture too much "empty" and would have seen the figure more present. Because the figure is really great, your skin shader is really cool (the bones going under the skin....so ugly and beautifull!) and your glass work is nice too!
3 stars for me, but it's really near of the 4!:)

At first glance I thought this was a fantastic piece... Sweet shaders, unusual composition, and cool reflections. But then I studied it alittle more and now I wonder... why has the arm grown apart from the arm bones? since its titled 'Embryo' I assume the person is supposed to be growing... but it looks like the arms have grown in an entirely different pose than the bones. Other than that, I really like this piece. Good job.

Fantastic work; 4 stars :)
It looks to me that you have an underlying skeleton object, has has been misplaced on one axis? Most would see it as intentional, but a 3D artist might say that it was accidently moved before render?
Simple and effective render.

Simply Amazing , Fantastic Job....
I like the idea (atleast how I see it) of the flesh/body growing around the bones. It's almost like a play on how embryo's actually form.
Wonderful idea and execution :)

Hi,
Thanks for the wonderful feedback! I find all of your comments interesting and informative.
These specific images just bubble up from my subconcious mind. I am not trying to illustrate a specific story, a visual dialog comes through my working process. I have a professional illustration background and this editorial element is just part of my work.
Some people are concerned with the bones developing outside the skin surface. This is an intentional visual metaphor.
More feedback is welcome. Good or bad or beautifully ugly.
Thanks again,
Steve Barrett

I think it looks odd that his bones are out of his body..like shifted to the left.
is this because he is 'currently under construction'?
but I still think the concept is fascinating and I like the coloring of it.

Your work is really amazing. I am very impressed, not only by the technical aspect, but also by the idea and atmosphere.
The bones out of the body and melting with it, with a fabulous subsurface work, are fascinating. I hope that one day I could execute this kind of masterpiece.
But for now, congratulations, it is not cg, it is art.

go idea
I see the poser bones don't align, but that was always a pain in poser anyway.
good work,
I like the skin, it's kind of translucent like a new born baby....if that makes any sense.
keep up the good work :)

Hi,
I have been away for quite a while. I just wanted to thank you all for the lovely comments. It's very much appreciated.
InKraBid,
Excellent job man!
I would very much like to know how you've made those textures on the body..
To answer your question... I used Cinema 4D's BodyPaint to create the original skin and bone surfaces. I painted a mottled color texture with warmer colors where blood vessels come close to the surface. I tried to vary the skin colors to keep it interesting. I liked the blue color for the bones, so I kept them within the blue palette.
I imported the files into Modo and added a bump map for the skin and bones. Modo has a great subsurface scattering effect. Under Material Trans, it's called Subsurface Amount, Subsurface Color and Scattering Distance. I used those settings for the rich glowing skin colors. It really shows through in the stomach area.
I hope this helps:)

Yes, after seeing my work on the forums, E-Frontier (now Smith Micro) contacted me to license my image for Poser Pro. Steve Yatson and his team have been wonderful.
It's been a great experience. Many thanks to CG Society for their wonderful community! :) :) :) :) :) :)
Cheers,
