Another test : This time I've tried to see if I can come up with something decent starting from a very bad stock (you can still notice the bad noise and edges); to make my job even more difficult I've went for an above the clouds scene where all the stock was in bad shape; This is what I have after about 5 hours of work; I'm not very satisfied with it, but oh well

I'm totaly opened to suggestions, it might turn into something nice :)

All photos were shot by me from airplane (used about 5 here for the cloudscape), city maniped from 3 singapore photos, ship a basic 3dmodel retextured in PS.

There are two options starting from here on:

1) Going for a huuuge city, spreading across about the whole plate, with clouds within it

2) Continuing like this and adding more dynamism/ elements

what do you think?

Well let me say that whether you like it or not, its well done. As far what your should do, keep the single small city I like the feeling of that rather than a huge metropolis, my only suggestion would be two move to the left a bit more.

Thanks riktor :)

A small update : I've enlarged the city a bit, better/worse? (or no difference :D)

Some mountains are in wrong perspective.

Hey Suirebit I really like this. I think it has tons of potential.
I would work on adding a little more haze for the city buildings. Right now it looks a little odd as it doesn't have the correct amount of fog on it. Especially the larger structures on the left side of the city. They need to be tinted more pinkish/orange and thus appear flatter. The tone of the forth large structure from the left looks spot on.

Maybe you could add some subtle glints on the ground around it to suggest more low level structure that spreads out...

Just some thoughts!

Its looking good, try moving the distant floating platform to the edge of the right third of the plate and that might fix the right heavy nature of the city area, at least as it stands now.

Kriket-Guy> that's an optical illusion you can see at high altitudine with that angle; I've tried to simulate this effect; admitedly tho there are still some persp issues which will be fixed.

Riktor and markyG thanks for the suggestions, I'll work more on it today.

Edit: riktor, tried that, but it doesn't look good; it looks better where it stands now.

Hey, nice start but I really don't like the composition. I like to watch the left side of the matte, but theres nothing intersting happening between left and right. Its just a city , in the middle of the canvas, far away ( in depth ) with no real "purpose" . Maybe work out something to get it more interesting ? I would either move the city a bity further away, or just a little closer. I don't like it on the middle-extreme-right.

Keep working. Looks good!

gah, I'm out of ideas....any idea how to balance the empty left part guys? I've tried adding buildings, clouds, nothing works without breaking the mood or focus.

I think it's looking good. Maybe you could put a gas giant planet in the sky on the left? Maybe if it's blended in nicely it wont look cheesy :D

Thanks JB!

Something like this? It definitely solves part of the balancing issue, but I'm not sure if it works with the scene

Yeah like that, I think it works very well in that scene.

You could try a Jupiter type planet too or even a Saturn with a ring, see what it looks like.

Thats a lot better!

Uhm, one more thing to be nitpicking on this piece.
The "globe" thats on the left side in the city, contains to many level of values, and it makes it look odd among those "background" skyscrapers in there, because those only contain a few
values each. Maybe try to take away that blackness under it, and add some blue'ish color instead, a bit more "light"

Ohwell, looks good! Keep it up!
