View Full Version : Mapping texture?
onizuka 03-28-2003, 01:48 AM Hi all,
The questions i am going to ask may sound a bit stupid to some but hope you guys can tip me off and get my stuff working. Thanks in advance. ok here it goes;
1) i am using auto mapping for the uv to generate the uv texture editor, then slowly sewed everything up and move the UVs to their respective position but this kind of mapping causes some of the textured not being mapped and thus having a lost of textured that is being applied to the model. I am texturing a hand, does anyone had a better solution for this?
2) When i animate my character, the texture that i mapped onto it moves off. Is there any way to make the texture stick onto the model so that when i am animating the model, the texture still sticks to it without running off.
Hope you guys can help an amatuer here. Thank you! :)

1. for hands i usually do planer mapping for top and bottom
2. for 3d procedural textures u have to make a texture reference object. or make sure your not using as projection when you make your file texture.
hope that helps

hi seth,
thanks for yah advice there! indeed its of help but i got some more queries hope that you can answer.
1. When use planar mapping top and bottom, the side of the hand how you going to map them? especially the sides between the fingers.
2. i dont quite get it as in i did the texture, then i go into the shader , attribute editor, colour, then i choose the file from my texture folder. Then when i animate the model, the texture rotates and disappear as the model moves!! can you tell me whats going on?
Thanks in advance!! you are nice into replying!:applause:

1. ok planer project including the side faces and just pull out the side uvs from under the others. put the side uvs between the fingers. my uv pic has the sides in it.
2. i think your problem is. When you click map button it opens the window where you pick file. at the top it sais normal / as projection / stencil. pick normal. otherwise i donno whats causing it to slip.
good luck

Hi oni,
Your question about the Planar mapping. I was goin to reply to that and say the same thing. What you do is take your Uv's and move them out. This way there no longer hidden all you have to do is just adjust them uvs that are on the sides. Thats all. I dont remember your second question sorry.

You might have several UV sets.
Would you reset your UVprojection like this?
And check which one is the current set.

Thanks Lev and Seth, thats nice of you guys to reply and rollmops you actually took the trouble to save a gif file of the setting Cool! Thank you very much man, i will go and try on the advices you guys mention and see how it goes. :applause:
But before that there is one more thing abt moving the Uvs at the texture editor, if i move the Uvs, it will not affect the actual mapping? irregardless of whether i move to a bigger surface area or whether its proportional? i can move the Uvs from under to the side of the fingers but it will not be proportional, that will not cos the mapping to be wrong?
ok thanks once again

Hi onizuka,
to make sure I got the right proportions, no stretchings, etc, I usually apply a checkboard textures to the model while I'm arranging the UVs....when I'm satisfied with the layout, make a UV snapshot, paint the texture over it, exchange with the check-texture and...tadaa.
Hope this helps.

Hey guys,
thanks once again for the advice! it works well for me now!
As you can see the attached below!

Quite happy with how it looks now but i got a query about bump maps, is it true that what i need for bump maps is to change the texture that i created to grayscale and that will solve the problem? it will show all the bumps on a hand? or i need to repaint a new texture for bump maps? Any suggestions for this?

whoa, that hand gives me the creeps..:surprised
you could try converting it to grayscale for a start, but I think you'll need to do some extra painting, as it will be far too detailed for a bumpmap, me thinks...
must...sleep...now...
nice modeling, btw:thumbsup:
