I will be entering in the "Freeform Entry" category for this challenge.

The cannon I will use is a German sFH 18 15cm anti-tank gun. This is not really a pre-WWI cannon, but its produced during WWI so its pretty close and it is linked to in the reference thread so I hope its ok.

Indeed it's a photo of a "real world model", built by Gerhard Strobl, which is not the name of the thread author.

But besides that a nice choice to do a neat animation ;-)
