View Full Version : Concept art for a game
MikkoK 03-28-2003, 12:25 AM This picture is one of the latest stuff I've done for a game project I've been involved with for some time now.
Does this kind of black and white work seem appealing to any of you guys?
C&C more than ever please :)

Very Cool.
I like this balck and white product...has a nice atmosphere. I am not so crazy about the eyes though. a bit too bright and lacking focus / menace.

it is good, whats the game about?
maybe some more light reflected from the water on his belly and the scratch texture could use more chaos in parts and less in others. i think the amount of light uve got flooding in from behind would cause much more of a sillouhette esp as theres no diffuse lighting over head eg. a sky, maybe add to this area.
good job tho looks cool

Thanx a lot!
I fixed the eyes, now they're not so blurred anymore. There's a reason for them being quite bright. In the game the eyes are supposed to be visible (glowing) even when the character is in the shadows.
Yeah, the pic is not very realistic when it comes to reflecting light, the belly should probably show more detail (rather than black). Considering that the character is in a corridor of some kind, it's also true that the silhouette effect should be a lot stronger. But I'm kind of happy with it myself, and as a concept work I'm not sure if all the rules of realistic shading have to be implemented :)
About the scratch texture, did you talk about the belly area or the whole armor? The belly is still more sketchy than the torso part and hands, maybe because the pic started as a rougher sketch until I added more detail where I thought it was neccessary.
About the confusion, do you mean that the armor shouldn't be as 'grainy' everywhere or just that the pen strokes are too visible?
More comments please!! :)

Oh, almost missed this one -
Q: What's the game about?
A: Basically it's about this dude killing hordes of ugly aliens
It's a 3rd person 3D-shooter that is under prototype development. You might want to check http://www.draconus.com/games/xenocide/ though there isn't much up-to-date info about it. Never mind the english used ;)

It seems that I finally tracked the reason for my computer crashing like in every 15 minutes.
So I ditched my GeForce for the old Voodoo3. Then I ran my Adobe gamma config again and realised this pic looked way too bright compared to what I meant it to be so I decided to update it. God bless the curve adjustments!

Thanx guys!
BTW.
I've been trying to get myself an Avatar here but can't seem to make it work. The 'change avatar' link doesn't do it for me. Any advice???

great pic love the whole feel to him. I didn't have any problems with the eyes or shadows because they look good for the kind of drawing you are doing, my only hang-up is with the hand that is helping hold the gun up I know how hard it is to make a really good looking hand, but it seems a little off here. (i am still trying to get my avitar to work too)

Thanks for the info on avatars!
Yeah, I know what you mean with the hand. In my opinion the fingers might look too short, but the biggest difficulty is in making the foreshortening effect look right with this kind of 'exaggeration' in the armor and muscles. Crit taken :)

Gee, that's like the best compliment to me, since I'm a big fan of Spawn! I admit Spawn was a great influence when designing this character as well.
Thanx man! :)

Hmm... Cool one, I like then way with much shadow instead of many highlights.
Is the front of his helmet/face edited in photoshop ? It looks extremely chromish.

The whole pic was created using the default brushes in Photoshop 7. I used a Wacom pad. It was almost finished in one evening, but with the background modified later it was like 6 hours total.
No scanned sketches. I know that there's quite a lot of sharp lines but I wasn't aiming for a 'photoshop-like' polished airbrush look. But it's great if I've fooled people to think it's partly hand-drawn since that was my goal in the beginning.
Thanx for asking! :)

I know this is not a WIP thread but I just thought I'll add a new very preliminary concept idea. I don't want to start another thread yet. So here it is.
C&C please, I just thought about coloring and finalising this pic :)

Thanx again!
Syd Mead, yes, the Blade Runner designer. I'd really like to be on that level someday :)
You truly make me want to continue doing this thing!
..and now that I said it, I added a horribly ugly avatar to make you all regret you ever supported me! ;)
great work!! ur strokes and colour application is very similar to Craig Mullins' work, he is my favourite artist! any character staff? Can't wait to see..... :applause: :applause: :applause:

Thanx man!
I have to admit that Craig Mullins has been the biggest inspiration to me since I was first introduced to Brom's work years ago. It was like 'sh*t, he did this with photoshop. I really suck'. So his style of blending semi-opaque brushtrokes and forming textures that way has obviously given me a kick in the butt. He's a true master at color use!
I haven't been doing any characters lately. Not anything I'd show here anyway ;)
But when I do one, I'll surely post it!!

I want to start by saying that I really like what you have done here.
I really like Monocromatic images. Can I ask you one question. What did you use to create this image. It looks to me like Pastels or Crayons but I could be wrong.
I think your on the right track. Keep creating a collection of pieces so you can interchage between and then get the final outcome you are searching for.
Ciao :bounce:

Thanks for the comments!
About the technique I'm quoting my previous reply:
"The whole pic was created using the default brushes in Photoshop 7. I used a Wacom pad."
I'm not sure if you mean digital tools (like Painter pastels and crayons) or traditional media. But the answer is that it's 100% digital, no hand-drawn sketches, scans or photo references used.
I usually create all my stuff from scratch.
I hope that covered the question :)

Far out! All created in Photoshop.....WOW
I really need to get myself a Wacom pad. A few of my mates have got them and they say it makes your designing a whole lot easier.
100% Digital, I cannot beleive that
Thanks 4 the reply
GREAT WORK DUDE

Yes, it's true that using a mouse is a lot more time consuming and you will not have the real possibility of FAST sketching. It took like 6 hours from start to finish with this black and white pic, I couldn't imagine doing that with a mouse.
I recommend buying a Wacom Intuos pad, it's better than the cheaper Graphire series. I have used Graphire for a couple of years and got my Intuos few months ago. I can tell it's more ergonomic and has a better feel to it, let alone the new features like tilting (pen angle affects strokes) etc. I also recommend trying both Photoshop and Painter. I think Photoshop is a far better program but Painter has its own advantages with its more accurate brush recognition, and its tools emulate real media better too.
Still, don't expect an artpad to make you a better artist! Practice drawing as much as possible :)
