CgTalk:FXWars! Cannon Fire!
THE CHALLENGE:
Render a realistic animation of a Cannon, firing at a structure.
The entry with the best SIMULATION (of the cannon firing process) will be selected by an open vote. (You may add an impact shot of the cannon destroying a section of a structure as a bonus) The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner designed by me.
DATELINE:
Wednesday September 12 12:00 PM
(You have ONE MONTH to do the challenge.)
The plug will be posted on August 12th.
TYPES OF ENTRY:You may do one of these types of entries:
Forensic Animation
This is the type of entry that would be used to explain the precise dynamics of the submitted model. Imagine you have been sub contracted by the History Channel to explain precisely how the model works.
Commission Shot
Imagine that you have been commissioned to do a scene for a TV film. The commission shot will have a precise shot description.
EXTERIOR SHOT: (NIGHT) - The Tower
An enemy field gun its barrel at the damaged tower. It is in flames, but its Fortress Guns are going strong. Suddenly the tower starts to collapse under a barrage of enemy fire from surrounding field guns
Freeform Entry
You may use the provided models (and models you submit) to create an entry. The core requirement for this type of entry is to have fun.
But keep in mind the key thing that I expect to see in all entries is accurate SIMULATIONS of a firing cannon.
CHALLENGE SPECIFIC RULES:
No work taken DIRECTLY from an existing tutorial. You may use an existing tutorial only for reference.
You may use a pre existing model(or use any of the models provived) , as long as you give credit to the creator. If you cant model, use simple shapes, since we are interested in the simulation. (But teams are encouraged, and if you are a modeler, you can make your model available)
You may provide a heavily edited animation with all the trimmings (hell add live action if you want), as long a you provide another PLAIN animation of a side view of the working SIMULATION of the Cannon firing.
Voting:
NEW RULE! The best single shot/sequence will be selected by an open vote. For this challenge we will experiment with only ONE category:
BEST SIMULATION
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.
________________________________________
GENERAL RULES:
The animation and simulations (if any) must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
WIP are encouraged if they are posted in ANOTHER thread. Please provide a link to them on this thread.

MYNAME_FXWARS(RESOLUTION).mov. And please add your name at the beginning and end of the animation, and if you can, also add a small non disruptive watermark during the animation.
If for some reason, you can't host movies, sequential images (Thumbnails size 160 x 120 ) are accepted.
Please add a brief text description about your piece.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used.
Collaborative pieces are accepted and encouraged, but Teams entries must have a identifying banner and a name. Shot lists should be included with the entry.
Individuals participating in a team CAN have their own individual entries.

Hi Roberto, Hi Guys. I have been watching the Challenges for a long time but never joined. I would like to join this challange just for the fun of it.
I have some questions though.
1.In the case of the "Field Gun" The real thing when fires it produces allot of smoke. So you can't actually see any "motion" or anything else (not even the cannon). So what exaclty should the simulation consentrate on in this case ?
2. Could i model my own "Tower" or another structure to destroy it as i want to? I mean the Tower that you gave to download is nice and all but i just can't imagine how would a Ship cannon destroy that , or the field gun. Since that tower looks like more from midevil times and thise guns aren't. Or this doesn't matter here?
3. What exactly should the scene contain? I mean should i have the cannon in an environment as well as the "building" ? Or sould the cannon and the thing it's destroing be just on a plane with no details? Also should the cannon be actually fired by someone or just fire on it's own ?

Well do you best doing the simulation of the other elements in the cannon.
Like the smoke & the fire

Just have the cannon do big holes on the walls.

As long as you have a cannon firing on the scene you can get as creative as you want.

Looks like everyone is using FumeFX on this thing. I am wondering how many Maya artists are out there, and if anyone is doing their cannon fire with just particle flow.
I've seen most effects like this done with just particles rendered as small dots, and you just render a large number. Anyone doing it this way?
actually this is a photoshop overpaint XD (I'm improving my skills in 2D cheating)

FumeFX might be alittle too heavy on CPU power for a shot job. But I guess it does have its boon. I'm a Max User. But since you are asking. I will be doing the smoke using particles for this challenge since it has better control and all (lighter as well)
Where Maya has Hardware strengths over particles. We max users have our 15 day Krakatoa Evaluation ^^

i have only been using Fume for about a month now and i would say that for a simple shot like this it wouldn't be "too Heavy". If you look at my WIP...http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=139&t=528555. That was only an Hour calculation at most. Great Max Plug-in though and i would plug it!
