Apply a multi-subobject material to your mesh.
In this order, place your materials:
Sub-Object Material : 1 = This will be your base material...the one you currently have applied to your mesh.
Sub-Object Material : 2 through infinity
These materials will make up your shag:hair definitions.
One will be for density, one for length, etc., etc.
You will notice that each of these parameters in shag:hair has a coresponding Material ID number that you can assign. These material IDs will reference the Multi-Subobject material numbers, omitting the first one, as it will define your mesh's base material.
Ok, so for instance:
Say you want to use a B&W map to vary the density(distribution) of the hair.
First, create a multi-subobject material. In the first slot(and this is important), drag and drop your emmiter object's material into hte slot. Now apply the multi-subobject material to the emmiter.
At this point, go into the second material slot, and make the material self-illuminated. Add whatever map you wish in the diffuse channel(as that's the only one that matters for this). Now, open your enviroment dialog box, and change the Material ID next to the density spinner to "2", making it refer to the sub-object material that you just made.
That should do it.
Pretty simple, but amazingly difficult to explain. It's totally powerful, and easy to use once you get it, so don't get discouraged.
I'm sorry this was so long, but it's the only way I could explain it.
Whew!
Hope it helped!

Look at my tutorial
HERE (http://www.lizard-head.com/Tutorials/MaxHairTutorial/Tutorial_MAX_Hair_1.htm)
you need to set up a multi-sub material right off the bat,, each effect you want will be assigned to a different ID
