View Full Version : showing dental detail in architectural scene
FusionDG 03-27-2003, 09:41 PM Hi again, :)
Another modeling Q,
How would one go about modeling crown moulding w/dental details in it?
I was going to run the main crown on a SWEEP Nurbs object, then run the dental detail separately on another SWEEP Nurbs object and add a bump map on that detail to compress every other dental piece. Is there a way to model something in C4D and have it copy itself along a spline path instead?
I could use a SWEEP Nurbs tool, and use a spline as a 2nd rail to have the dental get pushed in and out, but it would be a major pain to make such a spline as the rail.
Any other ideas?
Thx [again],
paul

Wow, that must be some wild sex to get teeth marks in the crown moulding! Just kidding. This thread should tell you what you need to know: http://www.postforum.com/forums/read.php?f=6&i=74827&t=74827

Hi Adam, that looks like it should do it!
Thx,

Here’s what I finally ended up doing:
I made one dental piece, then FUNCTION>DUPLICATE on the X axis. I copied the wall spline, renamed it, and then selected the Null Group with the duplicates in it. FUNCTION>ALING, and I typed in the name of the copied wall spline, I aligned the duplicated null grouped dental objects along the X axis and chose not to have it parallel, and I was done.
It took me a few try’s to figure out that I had the original dental piece facing the wrong direction on the X plane so I had to rotate it, and then I had to rotate my axis for the dental piece back to 0/0/0/. But once I figured that out, I was golden.
OT, but my thoughts on modeling for archi scenes n C4D:
I am enjoying modeling in C4D and am finding that I am using ArchiCAD a lot less to model. Plus it’s easier to make changes if I modeled the piece originally in C4D, especially when something was duplicated throughout the scene w/instances or I used the symmetry tool.
C4D is great for casing also now that I am becoming more familiar w/the Sweep NURBS tool. Once the splines for the walls are in place, you can just copy the spline and assign a new casing profile for the base, chair rail moulding, crown, it’s really handy. Plus someone changes the casing profile or height; just change the spline profile in the Sweep NURB, and the casing updates.
I really like that these tools in C4D are not destructive and that they can be repeatedly manipulated! These are things that I never would have really appreciated until I came off from using a CAD program to model and started to model in C4D.
Ok, love fest over :D

That's sweet. Going for anything inparticular? Georgian, victorian, or any of those strange names?
Personally I would've made one dental, instanced it a dozen times and used the arrange function along the same spline I used to make the wall.

Thanks for the kind words. I guess the architects are going for a Colonial look.

Your mentioning of using the spline that the wall was composed of would be smart, but I started the project in ArchiCAD, so the walls are all polygons, no extruded splines.
But I wanted to ask if I did use the wall spline in the future, would my aligned objects adjust themselves if I had to adjust the wall spline? or would i have to redo the ALIGN function?
Thx,
Paul

I think you would have to adjust the second spline/copy too.
Another thing: even though the walls were polys, you could have selected the edges along the top of the wall and used the Structure-->Edge to Spline function to generate the curve.
One thing you might really look into getting MSA (Multiple Spline Attach). It really makes this sort of thing easy, with realtime updates when you make changes and much better control over alignment.

Paul,
Do you model roof structures in Cinema? I'd think it would be very difficult.

hi adam,
no, i still use ArchiCAD to do the roofs...for now :D

I always use ArchiCAD to model my buildings, a 3D program can't replace a cad imo.

Yep. Wish I could afford FormZ.

FormZ?? To do what? :surprised

Well, ThirdEye, they do have NURBS... for instance. And they have a "real" unit system. And A LOT of tools. A bit too much actually.
Have you checked version 4? Seems really powerful. Of course, there's still the steeeeeeep learning curve.
Cheers,

I just finished a project for a client in Form?Z. It was a 45,000 sq ft house, but it was a simplified model (basically just a shell and the interior walls with opening where door and windows go.) it could have been done at twice the detail and in half the time using ArchiCAD. Form?Z is just too cumbersume... have to click way too many times for simple operations.

If i needed those kind of features i'd go for Rhino

hey fred & 3rd eye,
can i ask how you handle custom moulding profiles for casing, base, chair, and crown moulding?
At first I was doing it in AC, but now I have been doing it all in C4D.
thx,
paul

Profiler. just draw the profile(or if it supplied, even better) and trace the outline of whatever you need. If there are funky intersections and i need to cut the profile I use the Solid Ops feature in 8. It suits all of my needs. I usually build it all in AC.

thx fred. I didn't jump on w/8.0 yet, though it looks really nice.
I just didn't like using the Profiler tool because you can't auto update it like you can using the sweep NURBs tool in C4D.
For the base/chair/crwon moulding i was using the wall accessories tool. But that doesn't always work as i expect, so i tried using C4D's sweep nurbs instead.
thx,
paul
BTW, I love your new avatar pic. The Simpsons own. :D

What i do when i need a custom object is modeling it with roofs, walls and horizontal elements, then i make a 3D view and save the whole object as a library element.
