View Full Version : Need some help
TaT3rs 08-02-2007, 03:15 PM hey guys im kinda new to the whole modeling thing. and i am in the process of making a map for halo 1. i have modeled this cement blocker, the kind of thing you see on a highway. and i was wondering how i could make it more real realistic with cracks, and make it less blocky. and suggestions?
heres a pic of what im doing.

well 1st off almost nothing in the real world has sharp edges unless its a knife. So make the edges of the piece round. To do cracks i would use displacement. It looks like you know how to texture pretty well so just make a photo or download one of cracks. Then plug it in to the displacement. maya help file is pretty good with explain the displacement, if your looking to get crazy detail then i would look up mental ray displacement or a z-brush to maya displacement tut. If you want to make big cracks, like someone hit the wall, then you can try shader, which is under dynamics - effects. Plus I would also add a bump map to make it look more concret, if your doing this for gaming u might want to look into normal mapping.
hope this helps

to unsharp edges use chamfer in max or bevel in maya.

select edges, and find bevel in mesh menu(if you use maya). if you use max you can put on the top noise modyfier after chemfer, to get more realism.
