Title: The Desert Struggle
Name: Alex Halstead
Country: Australia
Software:

Hey everyone. I made this scene a while back for my reel and thought id share a screenshot with the community. I still consider myself a beginner, I've been using 3ds Max for about a year and a half now. It's a fully animated scene. Modelling was done in 3ds Max 8, textured in Photoshop and composited in Combustion. The explosion was made with particle flow and afterburn. From what i can remember, it took around 2 weeks to fully complete from concept to final edit. I'd appeciate any comments and critique.

Nice work. That's a serious explosion! Great texture work on the tanks tooo.

The big boom and missile trails are very well made, at the one hand. They look exciting and strong, and really draw the eye! On the other hand, they look very solid and 'thing-like', and not at all transparent or gaseous. The big explosion, from a certain 'frame of mind', looks a bit more like a cooling chunk of lava more than a fiery BOOM.

As a figurative, exciting, 'four-colour' military art, this piece is a success! But if the goal was along the lines of photo-realism, there's still a ways to go...

(The tanks are good, in either case!)

thee texturing and modelling of the tanks is superb, i really like it, except the combustion effects could use some work, the black cloud has a lot of jagged points, and the columns of fire, look too straight, realistically they should have a bit of an arc, instead of shooting out so rigidly.

Hey thanks everyone for your kind comments and critique :)

Chris Walker; Cheers mate. Appreciate it :)

ld80061; Thanks alot. I was more leaning towards a fictional cinematic look rather than photo realism but still wanted to keep some aspects real such as the tanks etc. I agree that I still have to work on the explosion a bit to get it feeling right. Cheers

Capt.Jackass; Thanks very much :) Combustion was purely used here to put together passes. The explosion was done with pflow and afterburn. I agree that it's a bit jagged and 'hard'. I'll have to play around to get it a bit more soft and volumetric. Cheers.

I like this a lot - i agree with the comments about the explosion. It looks a little solid to me especially the trails. I would think there should be a touch of transparancy here and there so as to seem more smoke/explosion- like? Also you should think of adding some figures perhaps to give it a human perspective. Tanks look almost parked rather than moving or animate.

Great lighting and models! 3/5 :)

hey cheers tSugar...yeah i totally agree with the explosion and trails being a bit too thick. I'll have to touch up this scene when i can make time for it:p I guess the tanks do look a bit 'parked' now that you mention it. Not to sure how i could give the impression theyre moving other than motion blur but that might look a bit odd. I'd love to add some figures in there :) thanks for your comments
