fbarretta 08-01-2007, 08:23 AM hi guys, this is a matte painting i've done in the last week.I used a lot of photos and 3d element (siege towers, catapults, army and architecture). I've post it in 2d gallery, so here is the link:

hi fabio nice work on this one, I see a lot of detail here, very moody and LOTR a like, maybe the scale of the fire is different in some spots and the top is like too dark it looks like it's all full of smoke, I would add a lot more of detail on the smoke coming out from the big fire torches
great work keep sharing in this matte painting forum

James, thanks a lot for your comments, it's really important to receive such considerations from an artist like you. I agree with you on the smoke, but I didn't focus to much on it 'cause this painting is part of a shot and smokes and fires will be added later in compositing...however, this is an update. I've changed the light and sky and add a bit of dust in the background...hope to hear more comments from you all!
thanks
Fabio

The fire torch in the centre looks fine to me, however the smoke from the other torches some how stops. Having been in a couple of riots (im a press photographer not a rioter) that kind of smoke from oil/tyres goes up quite a way. The effect is called pilloring where the heat of the updraft lifts the cooler/lighter particles of smoke quite a way up. Hence you should make the smoke rise a bit more at the same density.
I love the scale of this, it is very epic I can even smell it and feel the tension.
Love this a lot

Google gulf war oil fire and look at the images from that you will see what i mean.

I agree with the poster above. But I personally think theres to much black in the scene.
Keep it up, looks good.. but watch out for the values, turn it black and white to check if it looks realistic.

hi guys, thanks for your posts!Rich, I agree with you about the smoke (and thanks for the google link, it's really helpful). As I said in a previous post, it will be added in compositing, but I think I will find a better solution for the matte. about the black, I really don't know...I watched this image on different monitors and every time is a little brighter or darker than the one on my pc.
Hope to add some updates in the next days, even if now I'm totally focused on camera map for the final shot.
thanks again!

The background (mountains with the 2 citys) don t look very realistic, and they are missing some dof. And the buildings look painted and too clean.
