---Project 001

I gave it a long thought, and after watching the game section of Cgtalk thread for a long time, I think it is the right time for me to put my work on the line and start my very own thread. I think I can safely say to myself that I'm ready. welp here it goes!

here's my first WIP project- this is supposed to be an art test project but I decided to extend it up a bit and make it as practice project- so far- I've used some high end rendering to get this type of lighting-

Looks good.

You shadows seem to be a bit too far from some of your objects (stairs and the boxes next to dumpster). I think you shadow bias is set too high, either that or the objects are floating.

I'd also add some grafitti and tagging- perhaps even on those two large billboards.

Keep going.

hello! Mindrot! big fan of your work  yup you are definitely right about the objects- they are floating quite a bit! rookie mistake- should be a quick fix- and for the grafitti - you are also right- I hope you don't mind a couple of odd mistakes too - some objects don't quite add up in the picture if you look hard enough :D I really appreciate you dropping me a of couple crits -thanks man!

Its looking pretty good so far but the court itself looks really crisp and clean. Just an opinion, but you might want to dirt up the court lines a bit (the lines also look a bit blurry). Or even better, you might want to create the lines as there own mesh and use an alpha on them, thats atleast how I would generate those lines for a basketball game. Keep up the work, it looks good.

Id have to agree with Squidpickle, the court seems very clean, so does the ally, both of them seem to be ina dirty/gritty neighbourhood but yet the court and ally r spotless, though sum dirt and garbage around the place?? it would be nice if the world was that clean tho.. kick ass work over all.

Codyalday- hey man not bad man

Squidpickle- I'm not quite sure why the court line is bluring up there? o_O? but you are right about the court- I fear that is was too clean- I think a couple of worn out concrete floor should call for it-alpha dirt? hmm? haven't tried that technique yet but I will next time :D like in NBA streets for the PS3- maan that those environments looks sweet! :buttrock: thanks for dropping by! I appreciate it!

AoB- yup you are right about that too- the overall theme of the scene calls for an all out aging dirt on the surroundings! for some reason I just like the b-ball court to be clean and nice- I guess I got accustomed to playing on a nice and clean b-ball courts back in the days when I use to play  thanks for the crits though!

I, too have to agree with squidpickle. You did well by dirtying up the props except the blacktop itself- it seems too clean. Everything else looks good though. :D

these are nice renders. its nice work!

the only thing is i recognise some of your textures! the one on the blue dumpster and the back of the basketball hoop board (name?).
the white one on the hoop board being a rather choice overlay texture from the metal texture library i use haha.
if you are using stock textures from whatever source, its usually best to change them a bit, or use as overlay type textures. make something a bit more unique.
one day i was playing Crackdown and spotted one of the metal textures i like to use a lot haha! surely thats not a good thing. thing is, only other game artists will notice that sort of thing.:)

I wasn't sure if that was just me but I felt like I saw some of these textures before when I checked the thread a few weeks ago. That's not the type of thing I call someone out on unless 100%.

I really do love the environment though. Is it based off of any specific location?

ninjacore- darn you cought me! :D the texture for the blue dumpster is from Lemog's texture collection- I had a couple saved up before he shot down his site- one of my valued texture collection! Thank you Lemog!

Yup you are right about the Basketball board texture- actually you are not the onlyone who noticed- some people have noticed that backboard texture, and I have a feeling I need to change it to something more relative- I was trying to stay from the typical metal look of basketball board court- but it looks like it back fired on me- I will try a different texture or modify it a bit. thanks for the comment man :)

JuddWack- I'm not quite sure what you mean? :wise: but if you mean the previous WIP- yes you are right the texture maps. I just did some minor changes on the texture work- I just did the ground texture for the basketball court and changed the time setting to 5pm - 3pm lighting- I felt that everyone really pointed that ground was too clean. As for refference- this evironment is totaly pure concept and it's based nothing- well exept of couple of refference pics from my own research work. other than that- I think it's an original piece  thanks for the heads up though!

more updates will come!

---Project 001 update 2b

This should've posted along with the 2nd update but I had to do something real quick I had to postponed my work on the parts of this scene. Now I'm back- I think- I'm getting close to the look I want- the Buildings are getting a bit close but still a bit rough- any additional pointers from any one are more than welcome

I think it looks really good! THe court definitely looks better. Two things that stand out to me: (1) the signs need to be weathered a little bit- even brand new signs get worn down pretty quick in cities; (2) that "bacon" text looks too even. It doesn't look like it was sprayed on there, or like it belongs to that surface.

Otherwise, you have done a very good job.

dtschultz- hello! hmm? you are right about the sign- when I finished the render- something was bugging me- now that you've noticed it, it wasn't just me then :bounce: - I will age em up a bit. As for the graffity work, I tried my best to make it look really street, I figured if I use just the mouse to write it-I would get that rushed up look- but I was also looking around in the Filter section in Photoshop for tha dripping spray effect but I didn't find any, I'm pretty sure there's filter for that. I think I'll search it up on google. You have definitely nailed weak spots on this render- thank you! and I appreciate your kind comments
