View Full Version : fx/3D Showreel - need some critiques
LarsSon 03-27-2003, 02:32 PM Hi everyone.
I've been working with cg 3-4 years professonaly. I mean ,that i'm living nicely by doing things i like most.
This is my first creation i'm willing to show. It's my company's showreel containing specialfx and 3D animation for commercials, movies and industrial presentations. Nothing special, but fx.
All created with 3d Max 3-5 and After fx 4.1. done between 2000 - 2003.
Please give me some feedback. Mostly i'm interested of editing and about those industrial presentations. Not that they are the best part, but are they necessery?

This next one is our latest project, becoming kung fu movie. This is our first testshot. Actually our first 2K filmres shot.

-all backgrounds replaced with new skyes and mountains.
-all reflections remade to swords.
-there is lot of 3d leaves on the air in every scene giving the feeling of speed. Hard to see from quicktime.
So, tell me how i could make demos better and what do you think about quality of those clips. Thanx!

People may not be responding simply cause it takes a while to download the video. Right now I'm pimping along at ~200 bytes. I'm now praying for no crashes between now and tonight :)

How the hell can it be so slow! Maybe there is some bad server problem, damn. Hope it would be faster later.
200 bytes, thats too bad.
Thanx for your notice...

Nice reel! I would recomend adding sound. if there is sound, it didn't work for some reason on my machine. Sequestrian, that cracked me up at the end. Nice job :)

I checked out your reel and I think it looks very nice and professional. I didn’t get any audio, but assuming you aren’t going over the top with the cliché techno music I would say that it is quite strong and holds together well!
You said “Mostly I'm interested of editing and about those industrial presentations. Not that they are the best part, but are they necessary?” are you referring to the Wiper blade, machine, and car tire? I felt that those were not really necessary and if anything slowed down the over all pace and tempo! It felt to me like a commercial break right in the middle of a good movie. It isn’t that the clips aren’t good, they just aren’t as good as the rest. I was once told that you start out with your best work and you end with your best work and in the middle you put your best work! If you have to apologize or make an excuse for something than it shouldn’t be in your reel!
I did like the shot breakdown at 1:37 and the green screen shot at 2:31. It shows off what has been done. A lot of this stuff looks very nice, but it is unclear to me what role you played in it? I assume that this is all commercial work and that there were several people working on different aspects of each project. Did you do the effects, compositing, 3D, editing? I know that this is a hard one to cover, you don’t want to stick text all over the place, but I feel it is a valid point that needs to be considered.
Well that’s my 2 cents worth… Take it or leave it.

Thanx for your reply.
brianellebracht: There is no sound in that web version. It makes files too big and actually, i think that our client's are not listening it anyway. Originally there is Eric Serras soundtrack from Fifth element. Works really nicely.
RenderSlave: About those boring engineering animations. That's why i did ask, because i think same way. Just slowing down. But we "need" to have that kind of material too, you know, those industrial companies are paying well. Maybe we should have two versions. For the cg industri and one for other boring companies.
"I was once told that you start out with your best work and you end with your best work and in the middle you put your best work!"
That one above is so true. But it's so hard to keep that line. There's allways something more you want to show. Actually i have one good excuse for bad material. If we are able to show some useful technical innovation with some clip, then i don't care about quality so much.
Did you do the effects, compositing, 3D, editing?
Actually this is easy part. I or we are doing it all. Normally explaining our part of those productions in to our client's.
But hey, THANX A LOT! Really nice to here some oppinions.
Maybe i take those boring parts of when i'm editing next time...

Good call LarsSon,
I think I was watching it from a purely aesthetic point of view. I didn’t really stop to think about the target audience/market. I think that having two versions might not be a bad idea. The bulk of your reel felt like it was geared towards the CG, film/commercial audience, but those few clips felt very industrial /manufacturing.
Just so long as it gets the job done! Still looks great!!

hey Renderslave, what did you think of my reel?
That was awesome, loved the part where he does the backflip.

That was really cool. You have nice skills to do animation. I'm not doing animation so much. Basicly my part in 3D is modeling and lighting, i also like to play with materials and textures.
So if you are looking at my pov, there could be things to done in your animation. It looks too "3D" to me. Or just 3D without personal style. Maybe some texturing and better lighting could bring your animation totally in different level. Just think how do they use lights in real theatre or stage. And does you have to move your camera all the time. Gould be nice to keep it fixed sometimes.
Character is working and animation is ok. I love the end.

I've only seen the small version of the Jadewarrior clip - it looks fantastic! Very nice moody feeling. And the performance of the girl is really great too.
I especially liked that leaf at the end. Gives it a nice touch.
And the girl taking the sword at the end really incorporates all the swords into the shot - well, I simply like it ;)

I like that leaf too. It was really nice job to play with timing between sword hit and leafs movement.
btw He is not a girl...
I'll show you more material after we have done actual movie fx. There will be so amazing things, just can't wait to get in to work.
Thank you!:)
