View Full Version : HMC#10 Animals in Motion: A Hunting Eagle

Well I do hope I can do something here - not much time but I'll give it a shot - mainly because I've always wanted to do an eagle about to catch his prey... too tempting not to give it a try at least + I've never taken part in any HMC :) - ... anyway for now reserving my spot and looking forward to seeing what people come up with :)
sheesh I'm signing up for too many gigs at once:D
Welcome to the challenge, Magdalena. The competition just got a bit better...

well I started the base mesh today. I work by jumping randomly a lot so don't be surprised if for the next few days you see meshes full of holes :scream: and small patches hanging in the air ;)...
anyway not much done yet - here's the start [decided to go for a lot of polys so once I'm sculpting there's no problem getting them feathers to look decent... fingers crossed]:

What more is there to say other than that this looks great and judging from your previous work is probably gonna be a surefire winner!:)
Cant wait to see more!

thanks very much folks :)
well didn't have time to work these past 2 days but got back to the mesh today - made a fish for the eagle and the base - it will be a wave :) Also made the eagle non symmetrical
Next step - sculpting - YAY!
well hope you like

Beautiful so far. Love the concept for the base.

Something odd about the pose though, me thinks if he/she just caught the fish it would probably not be in the front but rather towards the back. Your reference shows the birdie just before the catch, I'd say, and he/she'll hammer those claws down into the water, grab the fish and pull it out by sheer momentum of movement, ergo the fish should be towards the rear. That is, unless the eagle is just dropping it off at the nest and kinda hovering there before letting go. Just my two cents.
Great work though!

that is looking great so far inetrvain, very clean edgelooping. Are you planning on sculpting out all the feather detail in zbrsuh or mudbox? Looking great so far :buttrock:

WyatHarris - thanks :)
TheRazorsEdge - I see what you mean - I wanted him to be just catching the fish as it jumps out of the water hence that pose :) I'm sticking with it!
nmcelmury - thank you. I'm a zbrush girl :scream:
well the zbrushing will DEFINITELY take me the remainder of that month if I want it to look decent... should be fun. I decided that sculpting the feathers rather than going for the alpha method will be best - I might use alphas later on in the process but in the minority...
anyway I started out by hacking some basic lines - not much done...
I work by jumping randomly a lot...
That line always makes me smile. Read it the wrong way and it conjures up a wonderful image :o)
Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the feathers.
hey mag.. really nice work..
i like the base!
have fun with zbrush!

well folks - I'm bailing out of this one - the feathers are more than my patience can bear at the mo:scream: and I really want to work on some other stuff I have lying around! Good luck to everyone else - I'm sure you need none!

My, what a pretty girl you are! (judging from that lovely pinkish image) lol
Anyways, unfortunately I dont have a solution to your problem, but I'd say you are getting there nonetheless. Your sculpt continuously looks very nice and I am sure you'll deliver something breathtaking in the end!
