hey guys, i need some help. i want to try modelling a robot of some sort. ive wanted to do something like this for a while but ive always had a sort of mental block and it never came to be, but now im thinking of ideas for the body and "skin" etc but i cant get a proper idea of how the joints would work. the joints are the main problem so i was wondering if anyone who had modelled a robot, droid or anything of the mechanical human sort could post up some images of their models shoulder/arm, wrist, hip, ankle/foot and neck joints. i would appreciate it so much so please can you help. and if possible it would be great for at least a few people to help so that i can get a good mixture of ideas. thank you.

i haven't done any robot modelling myself, but two sorts come to mind right now:
- the hydraulic joint - like the ones used in excavators e.g. http://www.a1heavyequipmentsales.com/images/rs404excavator.jpg
- the electronic motor joint - an electronic motor placed in the middle of the joint's rotation axis. this has to be a very high gear motor.

you could also do artificial muscle fibre - articial material contracting when electrical current is applied - research into that. should work pretty much like the hydraulic joint.

now i ain't a physics nor engineering specialist or anything, so these are just my personal observations.

thanks but its not really the TYPE of joint thats the problem, for that im thinking of using hydraulics, but what im having trouble with is making joints that can cover all forms of human movement. i cant quite get it right for some reason. but thats what i need ideas for.

well then i can only suggest you check out the terminator endoskeleton references, as they supposedly mimic human movement :)

ah very good idea.

but still, if anyone can post any images of joints theyve modelled id appreciate it. thanks.

i just came across a site with pics of this amazing little robot sculpture: http://ueba.net/hosted_pages/Incredible-Little-Mech-Sculpture. the robots joints have really helped me get some ideas. for anyone interested its really cool.

I think you might need to take a look at human joints and learn how they work and adapt. There's really no right way to model a robo-joint, so with some sketching and learning of human joints you can come up with something pretty unique.

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish....

I would suggest looking at an action figure or two.. say a Gi joe for example can mimic almost every human movement, then convert these to a your style of robot... For example a neck looks up and down / side to side I would simply make a full 360 degrees of hydrualics connecting the head and body.. Something similiar to the iRobot character.

When you want to create something in a certian genre or style (hydraulic style in your case) You need to surround your self with refrence, print it out stick it on your desk. This gives you something to refer to when you get stuck. Having large amounts of refrence also tends to help you form an idea of what you do/dont want. One more thing ALWAYS draw your design out completely before even touching your 3D program.

Good luck :D

thanks for all the replies ...

ive tried that, i started looking at sites with human anatomy and bones and it has helped a bit so thanks for the idea.

action figures are a great thing for ideas but you do end up having to expand on it a bit because theres always some movement that they find hard due to them being made of plastic and not made out of malleable stuff like people are, lol. thanks for that i, robot image though, ive been looking for good images of that robot :)

and thanks for your advice about reference and everything. i havent done anything on the computer yet because i am still designing, i just cant quite get it right yet, but im almost there.

that would be great, could you send them through email to djjimmy2k5remix@aol.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/djjimmy2k5remix@aol.com)
thanks so much
