Okay...! I 've been watching you uploading various character sketches but wasn't really sure how the whole thing was supposed to come together... and now I totally get it! Very cool! The expressions really make this picture, but especially hers. How mischievious! The only one really lacking a strong expression is the king. His mouth looks upset, but I can't tell what his eyes are doing. And if someone spilled something on your head, wouldn't you flinch, or look up, or glare or something? I would, but then, I'm not nobility.
You mentioned earlier about this being an unknown race. I think the costumes and architecture all support that :They look beleivable but not linkable to anything specific. However, the painting on the back wall feels very Egyptian to me... So Egyptian, in fact, that seeing it confuses me, because then I think "Wait, the rest of their outfits and their faces aren't Egyptian... Are they supposed to be Egyptian? Huh!?" Maybe something a with 37% less Egyptian, and about 24% more Mongolian and 5% more Chinesemight serve you better. :)
One last note - the man 2nd from the right looks like he's looking right at the ghost-woman. Just an idea, but it might be nice if he were looking slightly lower at the man pouring the drink... as though no one can see the ghost even though she's causing trouble. Or at least raising the question of whether anyone can see the ghost because we wouldn't be sure. Now it just seems like the ghost can be seen because of that one man's gaze, and there's a lot less mystery abotu why the drink is being spilled on the king.
Anyhow, now I'm really looking forward to more work on this, it's really terrific! Good luck!

No crits......what will get the viewers attention is the expressions and the immediate action. You've obviously asked freinds to pose, because the facial anatomy is spot on for the expressions. It's looking as if it's going to be a lovely bit of work.

Thank you guys! thank you for all your comment!
walrus:
wow, you are realy impressed me! you remembered what I mentioned about the unknown race!thank you for your detailed analyze, I appreciate that very much,it's very useful!
first, the wall painting is really not good, you are right, it's looks like so Egypt, and not sutible for whole of the picture,I 'll change that, because it's also not pretty.
the second, I am not sure about the kng's mouth what you mentioned, "upset"? you mean he looks too dispirited or ...? his eyes is looking up, maybe the pictur is not big enough, some thing can't be see clearly.
and you point a key point, one man's gaze on the woman, I think that's a mistake, in fact I want to let him to see the drink, I think the problem is on the angle of his head, I'll change it lightly lower. in my concept she can't be see, so that's why the slaves so astonished, afeard and not to know what to do. and everyone are the same.
concerning the " ghost", I am sorry about that, all you friends think she is a " ghost", actually, in my concept she is a "goddess" ha ha...... she always hide herself in the wall painting and she has some power of the kingdom, but at this time she want to run out of the wall and do something naughty, the wall painting should be her. but all my friends can't recognise that, I will improve that, ha ah..
anyway thank you for all your comment!
Mr Alon Chou..... wooooww I love it !! great!! awesome expression for your characteres ! The servant expression capture really nice the "little error" moment :D and the "goddess" is lovely and wicked, cool mate!! hey guys:
I changed both the king and the servant's pose and faces, I think that will more vivid.
the king's facial expression is changed to look up more, and face turn left a little bit, his hand is holding a cup, because he want a drink, and he thought
he will get a cup of wine, but the bed thing happened....
the servant's facial expression is more scare, that's will let viewer feel that how bad is the situation.

you`re really awesome in doing expressions, but even this new one looks great I liked this silent anger of the king more in the earlier version and also the servants face (I guess cause it was looking funnier and not so dead serious)
great job anyway, can`t wait to see your coloring for this piece

thank you for your comment, "silent anger "of th king, I think it's a good suggestion.
This is going to look goooood!
I also like the earlier expression of the king best, maybe exaggerate it a bit more, making him look more shocked, angry and surprised (bigger eyes maybe).
Anyway, I love it already! :)
Hey AlonChou, I like a lot the new expression for the king, cool man! Maybe the expressions for the servant in the early version is a bit funny, but both expression are great mate!
About the guterrezīs nice suggestion of "silent anger" for me the best reference is the "silent anger" of Hardy in the old old but great great movies of "Laurel & Hardy" :D , only a comment:)
Once again great and awesome work mate!!
It's looking fantastic!
The anatomy of the servant pouring the drink is beautiful.
I don't know which of the king's expression I prefer, both have that comedic touch , but the first one is definitely more slap-stick comedy.
Lots of great work so far!

Hey guys:
I let the king's face more shock and his eyes more big, not so anger as before, because that's happened in a very short time, at that moment I think he should be shock at the first, and that will be more funny.
and I add some scar on his face to make him not only anticly but also horrible, it have to let viewer feel that the most worst thing is happening.
I also alter the servant's face and pose, the face is more like the first one before, but more exaggerate than that. thank you mate!

Alon - This is by far the funniest expression for the king so far. I laughed out loud when I saw it! :) The only thing I would worry about is that the now the kind is less threatening. He's more silly, less fearsome, and I find I'm not as worried about the fate of the servant the way I was in the first try. How do the other servants' shock work with this new face of the king's? We can't see them here.
I think the first pose (your post #24 & #25) was the best so far at conveying anger and threateningness, but it was a bit unrealistically stiff. In those earlier posts, he had something in his hand, a scepter or staff. What if you added something like that back in? He looks like a warrior-king... A giant sword in his hand could help him look menacing again, even with that shocked expression on his face. Anyhow, just an idea... I'm really enjoying watching your iterations on this! Good luck!
Thaldir
09-11-2007, 08:57 PM
It is true that the king looks less fearsome in this specific moment, but who knows what could be in a minute's time? Their expressions are all magnificent, love both the king's shock and the goddess playfulness, and the servant's expression is perfect, IMO for someone who doesn't understand why his own hand is acting strangely.
In short... I love it and will definitely stay suscribed to your thread.

every facial expression you created here is awesome, I think you have done something like a timeline; every piece shows a part of the few seconds it takes to pour the wine over the kings head
the last pic shows the very first moment, but your first version shows the king at the end of the process, when he`s really pissed of and crunches the cup because of his anger...that`s the coolest moment I think
hope you know what I mean, can`t describe it better^^

Hi mate! thank you for all your comment!
Walrus:
I am glad that you laughed out loud of my work this time, concerning the kind is less threatening, it was really bother me, but I think his fearsome can be expression by other way, as you said just like put a sword beside him or other things, maybe the other servant's facail expression or pose will tell about how fearsome is this situation, even thiugh that's not easy, but I will try again. anyway if the pic will make people laughed and feel funny that's important for me.
Thaldir:
I think you are right, who knows what could be in a minute's time? before, I want him very anger, but considerate funny and at the first moment, I make him more shock, and thank you for you like all their expression, I realy do many effort for make them more lifelike, thanks Thaldir!
guterrez:
sure, I know what you mean! thank you for you mention about the "timeline",
and I will take more time to think over that.
Alon, maybe make the left eye smaller and looking more angry. The eyes are both the same size. Maybe this helps making the King more fearsome. A sword would help too, or a mummyfied chopped off head at his feet... heheh :D

I think the servants expression is perfect! The kings is getting there I would agree that it should look a bit more angry. I would do what Art2 suggested about making the one eye smaller then the other as in closed more like he has a twitch..lol and maybe he could be crushing the glass in his hand as this is happening? That way he still has a look of shock but also anger.
Other then that perfect!

Thank you for your comments!
now this is the sketch, there are two kinds of the king,
on the left : two eyes size are defferents, one eyes bigger than the other,
and he hold a big hammer. hold one weapon is a good idea, but I have to change the others'position
for put the weapon in the picture.
on the right: he just hold a cup, and want a drink, his eyes are both big,
I thik this kind if facial expression is more shock, I prefer this one face.

I draw all the other servants, they must looks very shock and scare, because they don't know why he
poul drink on the king's head, and they smell the worst thing is coming.
I haven't let them wear the clothes yet.
and at this time i put two weapons behind the king's chair, to make him more
fearsome instead holding the weapons on his hand.
guero
09-14-2007, 01:22 PM
Definitely go with the one on the left, different eye sizes makes it more comical also him holding the hammer makes him more fearsome. One more thing the size of the servants on the back should be tinny bit shorter than the guy spilling the drink. Also see if making the king bigger will improve things.
Nice.
Thaldir
09-14-2007, 01:40 PM
All in all I prefer the one on the right (eyes of the same size) it has more 'shock' to me, it is also more 'it is just happening' in my opinion.
I noticed just now the little heads on the king's costume, that is enough to make him quite scary, I think.
The weapon is awesome, but it will be better somewhere in the room, IMO.

Of the two king sketches, I like the one with the eyes of equal size. But I DO like the pose with the weapon in it (which should come as no surprise as I suggested it!) I don't like the weapns behind the throne as much: First, they're less connected to the king, and seocndly,. they make that area harder to read compositionally. And that's the most important part of the image: The Goddess causing the Servant to pour a drink on the King's head. Adding unneccesary details like sword blades there just makes that area too busy and harder to read, compared to the toher tests you've done. Anyhow, just my 2 cents. Good luck!

So beautiful concept, funny and very strange behavoir. One of my favorites here in this challenge. I also like weapons to be in his hand, not so much at the back where they r hard to read and r confusing while fighting for attention, while clearly the main point should be spilling hand. Best of luck to finish this piece as it should be!

This is going to be a very good expressive artwork after "You Cheat" artwork. This one haf alot of interesting consequences. You are very sensitive in human reaction & expression.
You left out a wide imagination to the viewer. It really gives me this servant is gonna faces a serious punishment through all the shocking expression on everyone in the room.
So thoughtful in this piece~.
It matches the challenge tittle perfectly. Its rare to see successful funny concept in Cgtalk challenge.

Hi Alon
Is really great illustration, nice composition and very good use of space, i want to add only one little think for your consideration, maybe all the character (male) are look with the same kind of face and physical structure like a clone, maybe if this amazing illustration have variety in the character you know more personality character like fat, evil, etc, i guess this add something, is off course only a feel, the work are really amazing man.

Hey Alon, really great lighting mate, i like a lot !! ( I think the bull gods statues trim a bit the composition and cause a lost of some "air" and deep on the city and background, perhaps the statues a bit far from the "royal room", only a comment :) )

now that Im looking at ur imag eagain an again (yea, its that good :)) I found two things to comment. The first is, that I find face expression of the poor slave guy much beeter from one of ur previous steps (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/19/13759/13759_1189530067_large.jpg), much more terrified, scared and real. I hope u could put it back coz it would add to the whole impression very much. The other thing are light spots in the first plan (on characters, on the floor, etc) which are white and overburned. I hope they will be more yellow at the end and not so strong/light. That too will add much more realism to the image.
Just my two cents :) best of luck!

Alon, your work stuns me everytime I see it...
The only problem I see with it, from the level of your 'first coloring' is that, very likely, people seeing the painting would think you are at a way more advanced stage, and point out things you haven't really touched yet...:)
and now I think I'll go and hide somewhere. ;)

Hi guys!
this time I only polished the pouring guy servant and the king, and I think they should be almost finished,
I changed the servant's facial expression to more scare and shock, Thanks for NinjaA55N's suggestion,
and I polished whole of the king, including the pouring wine, and I add the colored drawing on his brow,
the wine dissolve it and make it pouring down, that will make the situation more bad, there are many things
not polished yet.

your painting style is really an inspiration and the lightning on the kings face and body is just perfect, very well done
but I have to agree with Art2 about his right shoulder; I think it seems a bit strange because on the left the shoulder "bulbs" (not sure if this word exists^^) out and on the right is this very huge bizeps which looks for me also a bit ball-like
no other crits than that, the servants face is also great; even he`s more shocked now I think he makes the scene funnier than ever
be proud, you`re my absolute favorite in this challenge ;p

Hi Alon, your work is very inspiring! I'll bet this one will be in the finals! Although I agree with Mathias about the change in the godesses face ( I kinda like the former one myself too) I figured maybe you have a good reason to do so.
I don't know.. don't change the face back to the old one yet. We need to see how the new face fits in the overall picture.
The old face was one of a mischievous goddess, one that is pulling pranks all the time.
The new one looks like it's the first time she's doing something like that, and not sure if she's doing it right, but certainly enjoys doing it.
oh yeah you're amazing, heheh...

Beautiful, beautiful work, Alon! I love all fo the details and lighting and it's really nice to see everything up close. I'm really looking forward to your completed piece, as all fo the parts right now look fantastic...
That being said, I too thought that the goddess's face was more effective before you "tidied it up." She looked more like she was playing a practical joke earlier: The smile was broader and more mischievious, and the the eyes we're more closed (with her left eye even moreso) - was a sly, knowing smile, whereas now she looks more tentative and less impish. Sorry, but I'm in complete aggreement with Mathias on this one!
Thaldir
10-13-2007, 05:57 PM
I agree that the first version of the goddess had a more mischievous expression, but either one works for me.

Hope you had a very good Double Ten Day. :)

This really is a fantastic picture and a subtle take on behaviour and control.
If there is one small thing that confuses my eye it is the overlap between the right hand/arm of the servant pouring the wine (the hand under the tray) and the arm/hand of the servant at the back left. They seem to overlap and run into one another. It is very minor, but I had to work a little at first to separate them.
Good luck for the finish.

Hey amazingly well composed scene! I can believe how easy to read it is having such a big amount of detail on it! I always have trouble with that.......
I have to thank you for going back to the previous Goddess face, she's so pretty! and helps to leave clear that she doesn't do that only because she can, but because she haves so much fun at it!
In the end all the actions and all three main characters meet at that little space over King's head, and is so balanced..... I love how easily she submits the servant's arm.

I wish I had something useful to contibute, some peice of helpful constructive criticism to add... but to be perfectly honest, I hardly see anything that needs fixing. There are a few places ion the very bottom where the King's platform seems to float above the floor rather than resting on it, and a few more shadows on the floor by the base could help anchor it to the gorund a bit more. But after staring at this for a while, that's all I could come up with. I'm not sure what else you need to do aside from submitting it, but it's looking reeeeeealy good.

Wow, so you're finally done! This piece is fantastic: From the expressions and anatomy to the masterful lighting and subtle world design that infuses every aspect of the image. It perfectly fits the theme, it's very funny, and is perfectly painted: It's everything I would ever look for in a painting. Enjoy your well-earned Boxx workstation! I am normally loath to proclaim "winners" before the judging takes place, but I cannot conceive of any piece in this Challenge or even not in the challenge that comes even close to touching what you've accomplished here. It's been enjoyable to watch it take place, and is my favorite piece by you so far. (In fact, I'd probably go as far as to say one of my favorite paintings ever, not just by you.) Congratulations!
oh, and p.s. - thank you again for going back to the original Goddess expression! :)

Thank you NinjaA55N, I had change the color for more blue tone background last upload, but I think maybe it can be adjustment again.
the story is:
a servant was trying to pour a glass of wine for the king but the
mischievous goddess crack a joke on him by rising his hand and pour
the wine onto the king's head. The servant was terrified and didn't
know why this happened and what to do, so are the rest...

and some very small details, it's hardly to recognize, but I upload it again.

Wow!
only crits i have is that the substance looks more like water than wine, the liquid effect is very realistic though, great work!
And the cups on his plate look a tiny bit too flat, changing this wouldnt add anything to the total piece though
its a wonderful piece and i wish you the best of luck!

Hi
I do a adjustment again on the pouring servant's body and some small details.
it's very slight, but I upload again.
this is the story:
A servant was trying to pour a glass of wine for the king, but the mischievous goddess from the wall painting crack a joke on him by rising his hand and pour the wine onto the king's head. The servant was terrified and didn't know why this happened and what to do, so are the rest...

it's difficult to recognize what had be changed, but I upload again. it always many little details must be polished. I smoothed one guy's border edge.
this is the story:
A servant was trying to pour a glass of wine for the king, but the mischievous goddess from the wall painting crack a joke on him by rising his hand and pour the wine onto the king's head. The servant was terrified and didn't know why this happened and what to do, the others terrified too and hurried to get out of the way, because they knew -- he is dead for sure....

even if this sounds unlikely when someone looks at your portfolio, but I think your work reached a new level of storytelling and characters with this as also technical...man the background of this painting with this bull-gods and the buildings would make such an awesome scene of its own...
I`ll have to save this as desktop background so I can stop comin back and looking at your piece every 30 minutes oO
stop tweaking and start a new piece^^ can`t wait to get more...

This image blows me away - from the brilliant concept, to that masterly execution. All the expressions are so subtly different, it brings a big smile to my face and I laughed out loud when I first saw it. The winking goddess face is so mischievous.
I can feel super-volcanic anger bubbling up in the king! Haha I want to fastforward five seconds into the image and watch :P (Only if I get to be transparent like the goddess though haha!)
