Sperm Whale vs Giant Squid to be exact. I've been looking forward to this challenge. I chose these creatures because I want to do an underwater scene. I've never done one before and i'm not sure how i'm going to get the atmosphere of the water yet. But lets give it a try.

I plan to get the beauty shot looking very realistic and even make it look like a diver maybe paniced as he tried to capture the moment. Or as if the creatures swim past an underwater rover vehicle as it explores. As there is very little footage of Giant squids, and none of a battle between the two creatures I hope to show how it might look.

Anatomical photos/drawings of both these creatures are a bit hard to come across so i'm going to do the best i can from the reference i have.

Heres where its at. I've started with the whale as i have more reference at the moment so it'll be a bit easier. I hope.

This is a render test i did just to try a few ideas I have for the final render. It should look much better than this when i get it right but I think i'm on the right path.

wow great work so quickly, so suddjestions for your underwater scene i have some good some good ideas, firstly more ripple lines infront of the whale (i.e the light blue lines) also more little bits of crap, little tiny brown blobs of mold looking stuff and more dust little tiny tiny tiny white dots. See how it looks after that also take a look at some shots people have taken under water for reference.

also instead of fading from dark blue to a more green light blue fade from a dark blue to a slightly less dark blue it will make it look more deep, and just mess around and stop when something looks right.

Thanks guys. And thanks for the ideas Energy. I'll definately be doing alot more work on the final render and the image will be full of stuff. I just did that quick test to get me started.Anyway. Heres where its at now. Didn't get alot done over the last few days. I've started on the squid.

Zbrushed tentacle suckers

And the main body mesh with tentacles

http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/7639/squid1copyqa2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The tentacles will just be duplicated 8 times and joined together. Then make 2 club tentacles (the big ones). I think i might struggle with this as i'm going to be trying to join the high poly of the tentacle to the relatively low polys of the body. Also the tentacle are about 200000+ polys each so i'm going to have to watch out that I dont over stress my computer. anyway. we'll see how it goes.

While it woldn't be accurate size wise, check out the humboldt squid. These are the ones called the Red Demons. They are only about 6'-8' max length but there are plenty of shots on the internet of them in multiple positions. Plus their tentacle suckers are lined with biting teeth. Not the giant squid but they can give you a good idea of what movements a squid is capable of.

Hello,

I am attempting these animals as well and you might have seen this already but here is a great link for info on giant squids (http://www.tonmo.com/science/public/giantsquidfacts.php) if you need it.

Thanks for the link. Really useful. I have seen your thread and i'll post my comments there. Looking good though.

And, Thanks to everyone else also for your comments

Anyways...Heres where its at now.

I was having a proper nightmare trying to figure out how to connect the hi res tentacles up with each other and the body. So I took a few steps back and created the tentacles on the squids base mesh. I will then take this to ZBrush and add the suckers. I will have to do it with less detail as in the originals, which is a shame but my PC probably wont handle it.

I'm also having difficulty sculpting on such a long model. The axis is never where I want it to be, but i'm sure i'll figure it out.....hopefully

its a shame to lose that detail you put into the tenticles. is there a way you can maybe use layers or something?

OK...I doubt i'm going to get finished here. I'm a few hours away from finishing. I just don't have the hours free. I'm quite close but i'm having a rigging nightmare.

heres what i've got. I finished the tentacles to quite a decent level of detail. and i've started to rig it and have it fighting with the whale. Trouble is the bloody thing keeps crashing my PC and i'm having to rig and pose each tentacle as individual models. etc etc etc etc...

Well i might get it done on time. Don't hold your breath though.
