Except for the effects, this looks lame.

I'm forced to agree. Yet another fantasy "epic" without any ethnic diversity.

Wow. Pretty much the whole story in 5 min. Was more skeptical after seeing the first trailer.
I don't know if it's because more time has passed since I read the book, and have forgotten MY vision of it, or if it's because this film is actually shaping up quite nicely. Either way I am looking forward to it. This had better get a PG-13 rating.

The Golden Compass, lame? Are you people crazy? It kicks ass! One of my all-time favorite books!

Agreed. They've obviously never the books otherwise they wouldn't be calling it "another fantasy "epic" without any ethnic diversity."
The added slap effect in that Iorek and Iofur fight adds much needed brutaility btw. Can't wait to see how turns out. I'll trust Leigh's opinion.

There is a certain "we've seen it before" feeling to the visuals... However, the books are outstanding, and actually have some rather brave things to say about religion. I just hope they get to make the third book, as all get-out breaks loose in that one. The first book is a bit weak in my opinion, which makes the job of getting to the sequels a bit tough. But at very least, it is a very intriguing setup. I love the "Dust" around the compass in the trailer. For those that haven't read the books, it's probably just useless visual detritus... but oh it is not. It is a great story, and looking very nice on film. It will be one of those rare vfx films that has real meaning.

I put off reading the books for the longest longest time. Despite having been aware of them and 'almost' getting them. They just didn't click with me at the time, but I recently finally picked up the trilogy and really enjoyed The Golden Compass. It will be interesting to see how it all translates to film.

I never read the books, but it still looks interesting enough for me. And even though I don't typically like fantasy movies involving children, as that is often the target audience, this one doesn't seem toned down to that level--so hopefully its not.

oooh I think I'm actually drooling :scream: Can't wait to see it! I love the books and after seeing that I'm getting convinced the girl will be good as Lyra after all...
I'm particularly happy that they've finally shown the daemons - Pan's a cute ferret :D and the Golden Monkey's just as mean looking as I had imagined, yay! And the Magisterium is so cool in an mean way!
there's only 1 thing I'm still not too keen on - the 'clean' look of it all... I imagined everything a bit more realistic despite the fact that it's a parallel universe...it seems somehow too sleak and shiny, other than that I'm bouncing with excitement at the mo!

Holy crap, that was dull. Looks as dry, mediocre, and stiff-legged preachy as the book. Critics will splooge in their pants, but this won't be an uber-hit.

From what I have seen it looks great so far, if you haven't read the book I would go out and get a copy, its a great read.
