Hi!
If I fade to black by using transparency, also the hightlights of the image turn grey right away. I would like to achieve that 'real world' effect, where darker areas turn black first and bright areas turn dark a little later.

Thanks,
h

Work in 32bpc mode. If simple fading still looks unsatisfactory, animate exposure.

Thanks!
But - how would I approach this problem tough when I only have 8bpc-footage? I recently saw a solution to this (without using plugins) at the DV-Conference East, but stupid me does not remember how it was done...

The bit depth of the source footage doesn't matter, it's AE that does the math. You only may need to apply the Compounder effect to convert the 8bpc to 32bpc without blowing out colors. There's certainly a ton of ways to fake it using blendmodes and other effects such as Levels in 8bpc, but why take the hard way when AE makes it so easy on you?

Use the effect/filter: Color Correction > "Levels" and animate the black, or white values. This will do the effect as you discribed above.
