View Full Version : Weapon: Scifi rifle
ElFuego 07-28-2007, 10:46 PM Hello! it's been a while since I last posted anything here but here is my latest (still very much WIP).
Starting idea was to do futuristic version from warhammer Warhammer Fantasy RPG hochland longrifle (maybe for WH40K).
Mostly it was texturing practice (never done any serious texturing before). Model is made in haste :P so tricount is pretty high. Mostly I'm interested on comments how to improve textures (only the clip and scope are 100% ready, gun is about 50% ready).
Total amount of time spent so far (model, unwrap, textures) about 4 working days.

I think you have too much tris there on your model.
for example the tri limit in Crysis will be around 6000tris for the 1st person view and
around 1500tris for the 3rd person view.
Maybe you could tri to increase the tri-count a bit.
Oh...I read that you know,that your tricount is to high...nevertheless I hope my post isn't only dump :P

very nice pice of work, great modelling and texturing, great idea. My only crits would be on the colour theory. The colour scheme doesn't work for me, seems a bit like a cross between colourful sci fi (jules verne, Back To The Future part 2) and dark sci fi. I personally think the colours need to be more defined to a scheme, seem a little random at the moment.
Even if you didn't change it, it would still be an excellent piece of work, just putting my two pence worth in !

some really nice work there :D
my only real comments would be i think the stock of the rifle looks a little flat (even if it has a nice varnished finish) and the main gun is a lil clean, and should look more liek the scope. But you said you are only 50% done on the gun so its looking great so far !

Really awesome design work. Nice detail work on the texture. My only comment is about the palette; I'd like to see a black-on-black or less saturated version of the same gun design. It just seems a little too colorful to me to be a gun, but that's just a matter of personal taste I guess.

BattlemasterXP: Yeah, I'm a bit out of touch of the current tri limits for games but this is ment to be 1st person model (usually all polys are deleted that don't show in view so maybe the tri count is halved in real life).
Chillipunk: Yeah, I tried to achieve colorwise something similar as in those warhammer miniatures. But you are right, it's way too saturated in someparts so I fix colors more balanced asap :) and maybe it's my sh***y samsung LCD monitor that fails to manage colors as well as I'd like :) Maybe It's time to switch back to good old non-lcd monitors ;)
Darken-R: yeah, the gun is still too clean and I'm planning to add a "dirtpass" to it when I get all parts textured. But like you noticed the scope and the clip already have the dirtpass.
Kevin Kraeer: :) I had an idea from your post that I make another, more realistic, texture set for this rifle too.
