Hi guys, thought I would open up a sketch thread with some studies I am planning on doing. Just started as a runner at Cinesite so I'm finding hard to fit in time for modelling as they are working me very hard ;) I have however found a few hours during this week to work on my first anatomy study. I was trying to see what it was like sculpting from an extremely low poly mesh in Mudbox as I had never done it before. Here are the results. I'm pretty much done with it, I might make some tweaks based on your crits. Thanks :)

Hi
Nice thread start
If you want help on the topology you might want to show the wireframe too. This way the experts (not me, but there are quite a few great modelers aroundthese forums) can be of better assistance.

Thanks for the reply! Not so worried about topology with this thread, mainly interested in anatomy. The last sculpt had no topology at all, If I wanted to make it animateable I would retopo it in Maya but for now this is just an exercise...

Here is what I started with from Maya...

Hi...James ..:)

Nice one,...I like the progression sequence, face and figure..
I wouldn't mind seeing the cloth on her head tied at the back, exposing the curvature of the back of her skull, where it ties into the neck, and maybe an ear exposed also....Looks a little flat in that area where the cloth meets the face...a shadow in that area would take care of that, and maybe some folds in the cloth would add to the roundness and volume of her skull. ..Just a couple of thoughts that might add to the piece...
Anyway, ...really looking forward to seeing more of your work, and progress...
TAKE CARE
Glenn

Here is something I'm working on for one of the sculpting challenges here, the base mesh is from a guy called Chad Hamlet, this is what I have so far, let me know if you have suggestions or comments :)

Bit of an update on the old man head I am working on, finding him a fun piece to work with :)

If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them

Well hi there James.

Nice thread you've started up here. I do have some suggestions on the old man. First, his eyebrows could be more protruded. Seems like the teardot area could go in deeper, though it might just look like that from this angle. Next, some flesh could be falling from the mandible (jaw bone). Here references could help you, but I assume you have some. I guess it might not occur on every individual very evidently.
The corners of the lips need some more work too as I see it.

But these all are not crits, they're suggestions. It would be good if you could post your refs, then it would be easier to judge.

Great work overall.

Hi Rebecca! Thanks for the welcome, I'll be sure to read through those those threads :)

Razz, thanks for the suggestions mate! :) I'll have a look at going over them.. Unfortunatley I don't have many refs, I did have some of an oldish guy, but then decided to push him a bit further. I'm thinking now that I should be more true to refs if I want to get more realistic results, its a learning process though, so I don't mind

Found a site recently called Pose Maniacs (http://www.posemaniacs.com) and thought I would test out my new Wacom... I really don't draw much at all, even though I know I should but hey I guess there is only one way to improve and thats by doing... Here are a few 30-60sec sketches from my little drawing session..

Hopefully I will start to improve if I can find time to do this stuff a few times a week, I'm still getting used to drawing with a wacom to be honest.. hopefully I will have some more 3d/2d stuff to show you guys soon!

Kind of floundering a bit at the moment, I have no formal art training so not sure if the things I am practicing are effective practice or not.. Still really enjoying it though which is the main thing! These are a couple of figure studies I did tonight. With the absence of a real model I have used reference from http://characterdesigns.com Would be good to know if anyone has advice on any good exercises that I may benefit from?

I did some 3d today too, hopefully will be able to post it tommorrow... its a bit better than my 2d drawings :)

Here is some 3D stuff for today, I wanted to model the eyes closed but can see they are obviously flawed in structure.. I have lost patience with it though and would rather sketch out something new :) Hopefully this is an improvement on my last 3d bust..

I don't have a ton of formal 2D training past foundation year at art school, but if you're looking to study it I'd recommend picking up a good book that takes you through a course. There are a lot of them... Vilppu's (http://www.vilppustore.com/VDM.htm) is a good beginning to end drawing course, Bridgeman (http://www.amazon.com/Bridgmans-Complete-Guide-Drawing-Life/dp/0806930152/ref=ed_oe_p)'s is a great anatomy workup, etc etc.

From what you've posted it looks like you're using the tablet as a pen which, while valid, isn't necessarily the fastest way to advance. I've found going in there loose, with a chunky brush, and pushing the forms into place quickly makes for a much faster learning experience then trying to make a quality sketch (Anand has some interesting remarks to that affect accompanying his recent sketches).

That said your sketches are solid, definitely readable and there is a sense of what the flow is that is going on. You might want to take advantage of every opportunity to depict hands and faces though, they're hard to get one's head around and carry 90% of an individual's "character" :)

Nice work on the head sculpt, closed eyes and wrinkles must be a nightmare :D

Here is something that I have been working on today, going for a likeness to Clare Danes... still a long way to go :) Should look better with some hair haha!

Thanks for the comments kary. They are encouraging and you have some good advice.. I'll definatly get the Vilppu book and work on some hand and head sketches too. Cheers!

Hi !

I really like the last two heads. You've modeled them or sculpted like the rest ? If you modeled them can you show up some wire's please :) ?

And sorry for my English...

Oh they were both sculpted out of the same base mesh in Mudbox, for some reason my computer at work wouldn't take screen grabs so I had to save an image from a playblast in Maya....

Hi, nice sculpts you've got, they look pretty good! Only thing I noticed to critique, in the last one of the female is that her brow line looks a bit odd, perhaps too round near the nose. Also the ears appear too small, although it's hard to tell more from just one angle.

MrJames
02-01-2008, 03:15 PM
Yes I have found the brow a tricky area to work on... it should be improved on the next update.. as for the ears I am just too lazy to sculpt them properly, thanks for reminding me though as I keep meaning to fix them... I know I shouldn't make them a final thought but sometimes you get sucked into other areas and forget them... Another updat later hopefuly, any crits in the meantime let me know... :)

anandpg: I can't wait to see the final render too hahaha!!

Intervain: Yeah, its Claire Danes, well hopefully, I'm finding it tought though as she hasn't got the most distinctive features...

Here is a small update, the model in Mudbox creeps me out!

Well the Claire Danes bust has ended up on the backburner along with nearly all the rest of my unfinished work hahaha!!! This however I DO intend to finish :)

Few hours in this is what I have blocked in so far, loads to do still.. but I am really enjoying this.. spent some time skiving at work today printing off some more reference I intend to use later. The idea for this is to finish with a posed full figure sculpt, also I intend to retopo this mesh so I have a base mesh for future male projects... Oh the fun! Crit are very welcome!

good start - watch the tendonts at the back of the knee and also his buttocks, which at the moment seem rather tiny [in height] :)

MrJames
03-18-2008, 01:31 AM
Thanks for the advice Intervain! I've worked some more on him tonight.. I refined the buttocks and softened the tendons at the back of the leg (I will redo this area when I do my second pass of the body). Also started blocking in the head and a few other tweaks.. next up are getting the arms roughed in. Here is the update:

Hi, that's a really nice model you have coming along!
I think the area around the top hamstrings/lower buttocks looks too thick now though. Maybe push the top of the hamstring in a little bit, also make the lower part of the buttock come out more and curve into the hamstring better.

Thanks for the comments... a friend of mine at work did a paintover for me which has helped a lot also, I'll try to post it here later. Hopefully I will have some more updates for you on Friday! Anything else you spot let me know...

Edit: This is what he suggested...

Well that last piece never got finished lol, I got promoted from being a runner shortly after and never had the time. Had a bit of downtime recently though and thought I would start some short studies to brush up on my sculpting. I was really inspired when I saw Joel Mongeon's thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=473361&page=1). I really loved what he did and thought I could learn a lot from doing a similar exercise. These are my first two, I spent about an hour on each, got the references from 3d.sk. Hopefully will do about 15 in total.. more to come :)

Hey James congrats on the promotion. The nose studies are coming along great! I learnt quite a bit from doing all of mine, I'm glad I could inspire with my projects. It's kind of hard to see just from one angle, but the Septum and the nostrils could use more studying. Hopefully you can find some up angled reference of noses. I see a lot of models that have the wings of the nostril abruptly end when it meets the Philtrum.
I got the idea of those studies from a fantastic modelling book by a man named Edouard Lanteri who was a professor at the Royal College of art called "Modelling and Sculpting the Human Figure" (http://www.amazon.com/Modelling-Sculpting-Figure-Edouard-Lanteri/dp/0486250067/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222272488&sr=8-1) if you don't already have it I'd really recommend it.
Anyway, I'm subscribing to your thread, great work!

MrJames

Thanks Joel! Glad you could stop by and comment. Ordered the book straight away, I think you are right, its hard to find the up angle shot sometimes, although for the second model from what I could see it did end faily abruptly, I will have to search for some up angles next time! Nice of you to comment though, hopefully when I have done a few more you can have another look :)

MrJames
09-30-2008, 10:26 AM
Here is another one I did the other day. I just recieved the Edouard Lanteri book throught the post so I think I will study that tonight before attempting my next nose.. hopefully I can gleam some more information and it will help me with my next attempt. I have been a bit lazy the last few days, work has picked up a bit and then I got some more work on my tatoo done so my arm has been out of action!

In other news I just found out that 'Body Worlds & The Mirror of Time' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_Worlds) is coming back to the UK! I missed it last time round so I'm really looking forward to it.

All of my projects I have worked on at work I'm not allowed to put on my demo reel till they are released.. 2010 for Prince of Persia :( With that in mind I thought I despratley need to put my own reel together as you never know when your contract won't be renewed. So here are the beginnings of my first model, This is the unsmoothed base mesh, so no high res sculpting as yet. Crits on the basic form and proportions would be great! Be as harsh as you like.. paintovers are cool too! He still needs to be posed, hopefully that would give him some more weight.
