View Full Version : axis center how to?
Ummm, call me dumb, but I'm struggling a little to figure out how to use the Axis Center plugin. For example, I'm trying to move an object's axis (duh) from its current location to the center of some polygons that are part of another object. Can I do this? I'm banging my head against the wall a bit here. Is there any documentation for that plugin? I couldn't find any...
Thanks for any help,
Iggy

I havent used center axis but I am not sure if you can change the axis of ploygons. it seems to be pretty inbuilt.
I was under the impression (correct me if i am wrong) that you could only change the axis for a whole object not for polys.
No you misunderstand. I'm trying to move the axis of a whole object. Axis Center will let you move the axis of an object to the center of a group of selected polys (or points or edges, I think). What I'm wondering is: "Can I use polys from an object other than the one whose axis I am moving? Or must the polys come from the moving object?" and "If I can do the magic moving described in the first question, how the hell do I go about it?"
JIII you are damn quick on the draw... It's impressive. You responded within 5 minutes...
ohh well can't help ya there havent used the plug.

You can't move the "helper axis" that appears in poly mode. What you have to do is go to preferences and disable the center axis check box.

The axis center plug is god sent for me. Use it a lot. In your case I would either connect the the objects, select a point on "the other" object as axis-center.
Then disconnect and re-axis the it object back to normal if necessery.
Or. just add a point where you want the axis to be and use it as "Selected Points" in the Axis plug.
Cheers.

One more thing: I'm not at liberty to give details, but there may be a plugin available to address this problem in the not-too-distant future.
Thanks for the replies, but I have to admit that I'm still confused. Could someone please give me the superfast tutorial on the use of Axis Center? Would be very appreciated... Thanks.

I just discovered something that might be able to help you out. I don't have that plugin, but I know how to find the exact center point of any object.
1. Click on the Object Axis Tool.
2. Reset the object center point to 0,0,0 by typing a 0 in each of the coordinate boxes. (You might wanna write down the coordinates already listed if you don't plan on resetting this object's object center point)
3. Enter the edit point mode and select all the points of the object whose center you are trying to locate.
4. Look down at your coordinates window and the exact center of that object (or at least all the points you selected) will be listed.
You can either use this coordinate info to reset the object's exact center point using the Object Axis Tool or use it to match your other oject to the center point of this object.
Did that make any sense?:)
