ok, so I'm trying to set the DOF on my camera so one particle is in focus.

I used a distance tool to measure the distance from the camera point of origin to the particle, but when I render it everything's so out of focus that it just renders an almost blank frame.

Things get more in focus as I increase the focus distance, up to incredibly high values like 2000 or 3000, but all the particles are evenly focused when this happens (the measure tool says it's 2.06 from the camera to the particle). Can anyone tell me why this is happening, and how I can calculate the correct distance to set?

Thanks

if i remember correctly, the mr lens shader works negatively for distance, that is, if the object is 5 units away from the camera, you should set the focus length to -5

How do I use the MR DOF lens shader rather than the standard Msys camera DOF?

Ok, figured out the MR DOF lens shader, however, it still didn't seem to be working right, and I was suspecting it was an issue with adding DOF to particles, so I did a little test.

I added a sphere to the scene and positioned and resized it to match a particle in the foreground of my shot. The sphere is in focus as it should be, however, the prticle right next to it is out of focus. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can get around it?

It seems that Maya is not taking into account distance from camera when it's calculating DOF for the particles, they are all blurred the same amount regardless of their distance.

ok, I solved the problem by swapping out the blobbies for instances of that sphere. Does anyone know why it wasn't working as blobbies though?
