View Full Version : The Library Project
03-27-2003, 01:12 AM
Hi all, I don't know if you cgtalker's know me or not, but I'm a forum junkie...and that has nothing to do with anythign...
Anyways, this is a VERY simple project, one that I'm doing personally...
I like to find things: pictures, instructions, diagrams, etc. just about anything and everything that might in some way be useful to the cg artist and the artist in general.
To that extent, I am building a personal site, and I would like to have one of the largest link libraries, all categorized, mostly for reference pictures, ever found online.
What I need from you:
These are either/or/and, if you only want to do one of these things for me, I'd still be very appreciative..
1. Export your favorites as the html page, and post the html code here.
2. If you have found any helpful, or interesting sites, doesn't really matter what they pertain to, just you thought were interesting, please post the links here.
3. If you know of any libraries of links (ie, cglibrary.com) please tell me about them and provide the url's if possible.
4. If you know of an image search engine (google, ditto, picsearch, etc) please, please, post the url or the name here.
I thank you for your time, and I shall use this thread as a link archive, if Kirt (the mod here) doesn't mind, just until I get my site designed the way I like it.
Thanks for your time, and if you don't know of any good sites, but would like to look at some of mine that I post throughout my searches, please, feel more than free to do so.
Well, have a nice day...:wavey:
03-27-2003, 01:14 AM
I'd like to go ahead and get things started:
Every now and again, someone needs a dragon...I did a VERY extensive search for a contest once, but it seems I left out some very cool sites:
03-27-2003, 02:15 AM
pssstt...JIII, you forgot to post your links....
thanks for the compliment, I don't know what I did...but thanks...
03-27-2003, 01:24 PM
the normal crud, but essential nonetheless... I'll add a link from my MOD's PLEASE to this one as on 1 webpage seems to be like a good idea
The links on The Human Head website are great:
http://coldfusion.art.msstate.edu/camenisch/thehumanhead/reference.html (scroll down to "visual references")
03-27-2003, 07:40 PM
does no one want to export their fav's and post them here?
If you are worried about certain "naughty" links in your fav's just email me the entire html document, and I'll sort through it...I don't mind, really...
alas, so much internet, so little me...
03-27-2003, 09:30 PM
I can't believe the lack of response :shocker:
PS. Sorry to get your hopes up there on a new posting about nothing...
03-27-2003, 10:08 PM
aww...I don't mind...
I do a lot of searches for other people's projects down here, I'll get the library made sooner or later...
03-27-2003, 10:46 PM
lildragon sent me these (A HUGE :buttrock: to ya, tito!!)
Again, thanks, tito...
03-27-2003, 11:04 PM
While I'm on it, I'll go ahead and bring you guys up to speed on a few searches I've done for a few projects in this fine forum:
Be warned, they are many and.....different....you wouldn't believe the people here want!!
http://edition.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/europe/03/20/queen.sword/full.sword.jpg (<<<really nice one!!)
http://www.danetre-vikings.org.uk/Finds.htm (another good one...not only swords, lot of stuff)
http://www.legionxxiv.org/corbridgaenlrg/ (yes, I am amazing, I know; scroll down and look at the other 2 diagrams...)
Concept Drawings of Armor:
Absolutely Awesome Sites:
Interesting, though unrelated, things I found while searching:
03-27-2003, 11:07 PM
I just remembered, I keep asking people to submit THEIR fav's, while I neglected to post mine...
03-27-2003, 11:22 PM
Anyone have any suggestions on how to organize these?
I just found a TON on another forum, and now I'm beginning to wonder how in the world I'm gonna organize these in a suitable and non-confusing way...
millions of links, in thousands of categories, on one site...
How might I go about organizing?
03-28-2003, 12:00 AM
Trent, I will help and maybe we can both work on getting the biggest resource website one the web... he he "we're going to take over the world" lol... can't wait to get started
well if you get to big you might just end up turning into another search engine.
also look in the modeling forum for good links to blue prints.
they have a thread about this.
03-28-2003, 11:29 AM
Alright, good idea, JIII...
cgsearch...sounds catchy, eh?
I have no idea hot to make a search engine, but that sounds interesting, very interesting....
03-30-2003, 01:40 AM
Hey, great list you've made up here. heres my short
03-30-2003, 01:00 PM
Thanks Luis, errr...Clondike7!!
03-30-2003, 08:46 PM
A big thanks to TerrestrialSea, and all you other guys who have helped me out so far!!
hate to sound harsh but how am I supposed to know what those last 150 links are for.
orginization is everything.
03-30-2003, 08:59 PM
sorry, JIII, I was in a hurry...
when I stop colllecting, and get my site worked on some more, I'll put a short description underneath each link
Thanks dude i would give you a few links but most of mine are C4D specific. so dont have to much value.
03-30-2003, 09:07 PM
That's ok, I'm going to go through each of the specific software forums to get those links...
I'm still debating about making a search engine, JIII, but all the tuts I find are about "intranet" search engines, and I'm not MySQL guru or anything...
dont worry about it anyway man its not like the search engine is that important just make a big list of like say 500 general catagorys and then when you click a catorgory it expands into the more specific areas.
03-30-2003, 09:14 PM
ok, sounds good, thanks, JIII...
04-01-2003, 03:07 AM
JIII... My links my not be organized, but I think unlevel did a good job sorting through all the crap ones!
04-01-2003, 05:21 AM
Hey there unLevel, I've noticed you around these forums alot he he, I have one link here that I thought was good, I don't know if it's been mentioned or not.
Also, if you would like help with the organization aspects, I work with ASP, PHP and databases and I can lend a hand if ya want. just contact me if you are interested :D I'll try to find more links too.
04-01-2003, 12:26 PM
I would greatly like your help, would you have any idea on how to construct a search engine that reads from a database of links?
I think I found some tutorials, but it says for "intranet", and I'm not sure if that's right?
I could greatly need some help with someone who knew PHP and MySQL, especially since I don't know any...
I can greatly use your help, as here's what I'd like to do:
1. have some sort of site where I can personally add each link to the database, with a short review of each site (ie, keywords, descriptions, etc.)
2. setup cgsearch site, where artists can search reference images, other artists' sites, tutorials, and other artist stuff...hmm..that gives me an idea...we could organize the search engine like google, and instead of the tabs saying images, groups, etc...it could say "reference images, other artists, tutorials, and whatever or soemthign...."
3. have some way that artists can submit links by themselves, hence a large growth spurt spurred by the mass of artists rushing to submit their sites...
hehe...ok, this is majorly hard, I know, and I could desperately use your help!!
And thanks a bunch for that link!!!
04-01-2003, 12:38 PM
Yeah I'm all for it, I can do all of what you want too, as long as you have a server with php and mysql installed. I am trying to build up my web portfolio, so things like this are cool. However, I am in the final months of my 3D animation education he he so things are hectic, why don't you email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or add me on msn, and we can talk about it.
04-01-2003, 12:57 PM
Ok, you're added, to msn, and I totally understand about the hectic situation...
hehe..if you had any idea...
I'm in the middle of a research paper (which will end up being a book, don't worry) and a 700+ book about math book review (which will have to end up as a guide to reading this incredibly boring book that won some publisher's prize..)
I've got all the time in the world, trust me..
04-01-2003, 03:34 PM
Well, I added YOU, but you haven't been on?
I may have messed up, which is probably what happened...my msn is email@example.com
my screenname, so you know who I am will be Trent (unlevel)
I may have missed you, as most people don't use their cgtalk usernames as their msn messenger names...they actually use their real names!! go figure...
Well, anyways, I'd greatly like to talk to you about the search engine stuff, I'd like to start out simple, and grow...
btw, do you think there's some way that we can have a image search something like google? what i'd like is to submit the sites to the regular search part, and have the image search go through those sites to get the pictures...not sure
You're the guru here, but I found a few tuts, can't make heads or tales of htem, but maybe you could:
They might not be what you want, but I just find things, I don't understand them...hehe.. oooo...droolie icon...
I hope you understand, I keep a kinda funny, humorous atmosphere online, and you can take as long as you'd like, I'm here forever!!
I'm gonna see if I can't find a cool coding effect I'd like to try to implement into it, and I'll post that, along with maybe a possible design, as soon as I find it...
So far, the search options (tabs, sort of like google, and all the other places):
search, images, tutorials, artists, browse
If you can think of more categories, you are more than welcome to tell me...as I can't do this without you, at least as of now, you can have whatever you want...magnifying glass mascot, whatever!!
04-02-2003, 02:58 AM
Ok, this sounds like a lot of fun. I wouldn't call me a guru lol, but I sure wouldn't mind that magnifying glass mascot. :D
04-02-2003, 12:04 PM
what are you talking about?
:scream:
Nice try unlevel. I can see your edit lol.
04-02-2003, 05:34 PM
I never said pink pig, you're crazy! :surprised
04-02-2003, 07:42 PM
yes, I AM...
you are both crazy lol.
anyway why not have him be an umpa-lumpa. those are good.
04-02-2003, 10:55 PM
guess what song I have in my head...
JIII, curse you! ! ! (
ompa, lupa, dompedy doo,
I'm gonna really curse you
ompa, dupa, dompedy de,
now you must hide from me...
04-04-2003, 07:53 PM
well, as I am waiting on a confirmation from one webhost and trying to translate an activation thing on another, I should have some more links tonight sometime...will try to keep you posted...all of you millions who are waiting hungrily for links...ya right...
04-04-2003, 07:55 PM
Oh, brad, things changed a bit, I'll be making the magnifying glass, and sending it over for some touch up stuff for the banner by Insect666 (julius)...
04-05-2003, 08:12 PM
well, feel free to submit your links, PEOPLE! ! !
we've got a library to build here! ! ! !
come on, where is the 30,000 members when you need to use them for awhile?
Oh, glimpse into magnifying glass model: http://learncg.f2o.org/magnify
made by me and brent, our first model in wings! ! !
(we like working together, he takes a few minutes, I take a few...)
04-05-2003, 08:15 PM
Ok, with the info you gave me I'm all set to get started on the base code of it. I'll try to make it as adjustable as possible and easy to work with and change. And I'll LOAD the code with comments so anyone who looks at it will know what does what. Sound ok? I am going to be extremely busy with school, but seeing as I enjoy this stuff I will be getting some of it done in my spare time :D I hope my demo reel comes out ok :surprised
04-05-2003, 08:16 PM
oh, feel free to just relax, brad, you work so fast anyways...
work on your demo reel more, this project's gonna be here forever!
04-05-2003, 08:22 PM
I'll talk to julius sometime next week, we should have the banner finished or at least close to finished by next weekend, then we'll probably take a break, and I'll see if I can't re-sign up at all the hosts I tried before, but be nicer this time round...hehe....
WE WILL GET A HOST IF I HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT! !! ! !
04-08-2003, 04:13 AM
Hey, just for anyone's use here is that link to free php hosts.
he he I'm staying overnight at school tonight and animating a ship bursting through a wall... so many pieces... Oh well, wish me luck :scream: he he he.
04-08-2003, 12:09 PM
/me wishes BooRadley luck:thumbsup:
04-08-2003, 12:33 PM
Whew... I am tired he he. I know it's off topic, but here is what I did tonight. :D
My animation test (http://www.bmoviesrule.com/media/crash04.avi)
DivX 5.02 is required to watch, I hope it works
04-08-2003, 12:37 PM
Can I make one TINY suggestion? When the car comes crashing through the wall, you might want to make the pieces of the wall smaller?
It's just a thought, and it doesn't even have to be done, it looks good just like you've got it...GREAT WORK! ! !! !
04-08-2003, 12:47 PM
he he any smaller and I'd have to kill something, there are enough pieces as it is :D I am going for a cartoony approach anyways, so I think it'll be ok. Ahh well, I am happy with my progress. :argh: :insane:
04-08-2003, 01:07 PM
I am happy with your progress, too! ! ! ! !
If you're happy with it, that's all that matters!
04-08-2003, 01:13 PM
he he thanks, wow you sure use that drooly face a lot. :surprised How is the magnifying glass going? It looked good last time I saw it. Man I can't wait to get home and sleep. Maybe when I wake up I'll continue working on the layout he he he.
04-08-2003, 01:21 PM
well, ok, today, hopefully, I'm gonna start on that uber-duper high-techie design based on that site, remember?
I talked to julius, and we agreed that the magnifying glass might not fit in with the super design, so he might model a high-tech magnifying glass for us!J ! !
Just work when you feel like it, we're not in any hurry...
1. I will re-sign up at f2o.org today, hopefully they will reconsider and see what a benificial relationship with us might be profitable for them...
2. I'm designing a website for polymath (a cgtalker, don't really know him) and he, in turn, has offered to host us, even if I don't finish the design
3. I talked to Quandary12 about some other things (50 megs of links on a lost cd!) and mentioned we were looking for a host, he, too, has offered to host us, http://www.qone12.com/~cgsearch/
username and pass are same as email, guys...
Now, I have not talked to Quandary about how in the world to access the mysql database, but he gets 50 with his account, so I'd sure like to know how to access a few of those...
Brad, that last, "blank" button, can it please be affiliates? I think the least we can do is give whoever is hosting us some banner space under the affiliates section?
And don't work yourself to a bone, we need you for the long haul, so if you don't feel like working on it, then DON'T
And, yes, I like drooling:
I also like this: :arteest:  :deal:
04-08-2003, 01:32 PM
Yep, affilliates sounds good. So who are we going to use as a host? Oh yeah I was going to mention, the problem with using a frame in the site is if someone wants to send a link to a particular search result he/she wont be able to unless they are really good at digging into the site. The address bar will not show the search querys (like cgtalk shows the post ID's). Just thought I'd bring that up so you know.
04-08-2003, 01:35 PM
so you think we should just have the site re-load?
I know on google, they have "preferences" maybe we could have "search results in a frame" as a preference one day?
Like on version 234098?
Well, while you were posting, I've signed up on f2o.org again, I think we'll get it this time, I gave them the sad puppy dog eyes...
I think, if we can get f2o.org, we should use that, and maybe use qone12 as a backup plan? or, which one would you rather?
I just don't like asking for favors too often, I do that too much already!
04-08-2003, 01:39 PM
Makes sense, f2o works for me. Yeah in version 324954 or something I can implement the preferences :D or maybe v1.1 lol we'll see. Yay I am going home to sleep!
04-08-2003, 02:21 PM
Ok, so if we get rejected from f2o.org, we'll just take turns signing up every week, we'll fill their email box so full they will NOT FORGET THE POWER OF CGSEARCH! ! !!
04-08-2003, 04:56 PM
Wow, some very useful links there:thumbsup: Thanks for them
My very little contribution, but I found it quite useful ;) - some traditional painting techniques
I hope to dig out some more links...;)
04-08-2003, 04:58 PM
keep digging, if you feel up to it...
04-08-2003, 06:58 PM
Here you go;). Sorry if any of them was already posted ;) Will try to find more ;)
many links here:
human skin shading by Steven Stahlberg:
weather photos (clouds etc):
04-08-2003, 07:08 PM
whoa, thanks a ton!
by the size of the "3d artist" category on neilbelvins' site, I think that justifies a "3d artists" category on cgsearch...
what do you think, brad?
04-09-2003, 02:58 AM
Yeah I think we should have an "artists" area. I can make it browsable by letter, and searchable by keyword or something like that. The more the merrier :D
04-09-2003, 02:59 AM
Sounds good, you're da man!
04-09-2003, 03:01 AM
hey, maybe, if we make a "tab" for it, and we make it "sorted by" name, genre (2d, 3d, etc.) and maybe something else?
I know this is kinda advanced right now, so don't worry bout it...
04-09-2003, 03:09 AM
Well, either way we will still need to manually enter each artist into the database along with whatever other info we want to include. From there we can do whatever we want with that data (display wise) well, as long as I can wrap my mind around the code required for it :D
04-09-2003, 03:12 AM
yeah, I know about manually adding links, I've never thought otherwise...
and also, maybe, one day, we can have links sorted by hits?
like most useful returning highest...
Brad, I'm just throwing out ideas, don't worry, I'm not in any hurry, and these features don't have to be included any time soon, or even by you, I might leanr php one day, who knows?
We've got all the time, don't worry...just make what you want, then don't fret, I'll only ask you to make changes pertanant to the version that we're on, btw, Version 1 is only the bare bones, no features, just a way where we can start adding links...
04-09-2003, 03:20 AM
Ok cool, I can have that ready pretty soon then. I think I'll work on it tonight a bit when I get home :D Gotta love PHP he he he.
04-09-2003, 03:21 AM
sometimes I wonder about you, brad....
things like "php is good" worries me...
04-09-2003, 04:04 AM
I know, I worry me too sometimes. Maybe I should get out more
Oh well he he, will this thread be used for showing updates and such? Or is this uber-top-secret? he he he. I just don't know what I should post and what I shouldn't, obviously not the admin stuff :p
So get going on that super-uber-smooth-slick-sweet design he he he. I forget if you wanted me to draw us for the banner or not.
04-09-2003, 12:30 PM
oh, man, you remembered that I was supposed to design it....and here I thought all you coders were short-term memoried....if that's a word...
Yes, I shall work on that design...actually, here is my super grand scheme...first, please visit: http://www.yaxay.com this is my super grand scheme of version 4324544, where on the front page, is the search engine, and we shall also offer the foremost things to atract and keep a communtiy...fully skinned, through and through...well, now that you've run off and fainted...this is a long time from now, as is all things, it seems...
Anyways, you can post whatever you want, it's MY thread, I payed the $1.50 to have a "whatever you want thread" so you may put....whatever you want...yes, this can be for updates, rantings, anything, I guess, no one's really down here but a few people anyways....we could plan the downfall of a country down here and no one would know it.....hehe....*hint*hint*
04-11-2003, 04:23 PM
$1.50 eh? well since you are just tossing the money around my going rate is hmmm.. let's say $173 USD/hour. yes that sounds lovely to me :D So lets tally up the hours spent so far and.. well maybe we shouldn't.. could I just have my pay put towards the "fund for plotting the downfall of a small country" ? That would be worth it :D Mu ha ha ha ha! Speaking of rantings...
04-11-2003, 11:41 PM
how small of a country?
I hear there's an 1 acre-online country that a guy is running from his capital-home...
I think my histlory teacher joined, was going to see if he had to pay taxes here or not, now that he's dual-citizenship...hehe..
04-13-2003, 12:40 PM
Found yet another link for textures ;) 512x512, but they might be useful.
keep it going
04-13-2003, 07:03 PM
Wow, thanks azazel, once we get the search engine designed, built and publicly announced, maybe you'd like to be a moderator of the link submitting, as you seem to show some interest in this?
04-13-2003, 10:31 PM
Me? A moderator? ;) We'll see, depends of course of the time it'd take. Thanks for the proposition:beer: I just sometimes encounter an interesting sites around the net, and thought I'd post the links here, for someone to use ;)
Said that, here's another, lots of artists and design links:
04-13-2003, 10:50 PM
wow good site!
azazel, ok, I'll keep you in mind, one of the things a moderator will do is to edit and approve/disapprove links submitted by regular members, we're goign to have it where you have to register and login before being able to submit links, to which we will be able to edit and ...
Brad: ok, I was thinking of something today, and yes, I've got ANOTHER, much cooler idea for the design than the one I thought of yesterday, I will be spending much of this afternoon working on it...Ok, on the "web" search field, can we have it where the links can be searched by "keyword" "description" "title" and maybe "most popular?
I'm gonna see if I can't make a huge list of all the advanced search options under each category....
Oh, and do you think that cgsearch should have a forum? where when you register to submit links, it automatically registers you there too? Maybe a way people can submit links, or help review sites, or just a small hangout? I think we can skin it+ the site to look alike, I've got a few more ideas on that as well....
oh, well, brad, just wanted to hear what you thought...maybe the moderators of the links can be forum mods, what do you think?
04-13-2003, 10:54 PM
Oh, and not to scare you right away, Azazel, you won't be the ONLY mod, there's going to be several, all we need is active link submitters, there won't be too many links to edit/approve for each of us...I'll be constantly adding links...don't worry, 1 link a week will be more than enough work for those of you who might be moderators, whereas I'll do much more....so many links...
Oh, brad, is there a way, if we do have a forum, that we can have in user profiles "links added" like a # like post count?
04-13-2003, 11:12 PM
Hmmm, well I've been poking around in the forum scripts and such and I'm sure there is a way, it would take some experimentation, but that's all cool. And yeah we can search the links by almost anything as log as we implement those features into the database somehow. I want to see this new layout idea he he :D
*edit* Oh yeah, and forum mods could be link mods too *edit*
04-14-2003, 09:21 AM
I see, I thought it'll be way more than one link a week... I don't think few links a day would be a big problem ;) So count me in ;)
04-14-2003, 12:46 PM
I think we shouldn't forget Sumaleth's link archive:
04-14-2003, 02:04 PM
yes, yes, that looks good, we mustn't forget them...
Azazel, I'll holler at you when we get the site designed and coded, then while we're uploading links and stuff, we can also start skinning the forums....
I've got a lot to do this afternoon, I know, it seems that I'm the one slowing us down....grrr....if you people wouldn't work so fast....grrr....
Brad: I really hope to have most of the new layout finished by tonight sometime, if you're on msn tonight, I'll show you, ok?
btw: I don't know if you'll like the new layout very much...it's differnent, to say the least.....but maybe different is what's needed?
04-14-2003, 02:08 PM
Also, brad, do you think we might be able to do the image search thing like fineart? where we host images in a database, and then just search the database? At least until we can figure out how to do a google image search? Or at least something similar? We might be able to do that for the blueprints section, too....
How much copyright infringement is it if we take requests for blueprints, and I get them, and slowly accumulate the blueprints over time? I may email suurland and see what permissions must be acquired....
also check out SM cars they have tons o blue prints too.
they would also know what to do.
04-14-2003, 05:27 PM
JIII, good idea, I'll contact them tonight...thanks for thinking of that....
04-14-2003, 08:25 PM
Yeah I wont be on tonight, but I'll be able to check it out tomorrow. Different is good :D Yes we could have an image search like that until we figure out a web search. Hey thanks for offering some time Azazel :D that's cool :D
Hey unLevel, if you email me a link to the layout I can check it out, I wont be on msn cuz I'll be at school all night, but I can still check my mail.
04-16-2003, 12:23 PM
We almost went halfway down the page!!!

btw, to keep this post relevant, we are hard at work on the design, I think "different" isn't descriptive enough....hehe...
04-16-2003, 02:38 PM
well, updates still:
I emailed BOTH suurland and onnovanbran (<don't know how to spell it right now...) and have not recieved anything yet....
I've got a huge list of blueprint sites, but it looks like suurland finds sites that have blueprints, and asks permission to each of the sites...we may need to do that too
Oh, and for those of you interested in just what we're up to down here but are too lazy to read the entire thread, here's a summary:
cgsearch will be and combine all the following:
1. a large library of categorized links, which will be searchable
2. hosted reference images (like fineart, maybe...)
3. blueprints galore
4. texture library
5. an artist "yellow pages" displaying their sites
6. whatever else we can think of to cram in there...
OK, tonight, hopefully, I'll get around to making the "categorized link library" ie, figure out a ton of categories so that we can keep everything orderly...
If Julius gets on and I get to talk to him, we'll see what we can do about those "top secret" blue objects that I can't tell you are super cool semi-transparent neon blue tentacles...
I will also try to play around with the layout some, it looks a bit "busy" to me....
Also, if a certain someone whom I know that builds ibf skins gets on msnmessenger, I'll see if me and him can't "negotiate" a deal for a skin, if not, I think I can get brent to help me and me and him skin the forum....but I'd like to see how you guys like the finished layout once insect666 has a turn at it....
well, talk to you guys later, just stating the obvious...trying to look busy...
04-16-2003, 02:57 PM
I dug out 300+ MS IE bookmarks .. they call it "Favourites", you can't export them as single html file.... 300 files for 300 bookmarks... crap:annoyed:Long live Phoenix ;) Anyway, zipped them instead, click here (http://members.lycos.co.uk/eltazar/IEfavourites.zip)
Some of them may be already posted here, some not.....hope they will be of any use ;)
PS Do You consider any system of checking the dead links? Maybe reporting by users or something?
04-16-2003, 03:05 PM
Good idea Azazel...brad, is it possible?
It looks like we should be finishing the design and a few organiztion things this week, then, in the next month or so, we should start testing, and making tweaks to both the design and coding, to get everything working as soon as possible...
Then all summer, we're going to keep hacking away at finding a few more free hosting accounts, for backup purposes, and start submitting links...
We, also this summer, are goign to build the forums, skin them, and find a way to integrate them into the link thing (like under how many posts you have, it shows how many links you've submitted?) That way, it will be a good indicator to find out who to add as mods, and who's not doing any work...
Brad, if you can ever get all my insane ideas coded, you are king of the world and not responsible for doing anything but tweaking the code as we need....
Now, I think that I can set aside 2 different accounts, each with their own database, for the ref images and the textures...
Also, we need to chose which section we are each going to moderate:
1. web (we are all part of this, this is the main link library)
2. reference images (whoever choses this, brad, we're going to have to have a way that users can submit images, and the mod can edit them as he wishes and add them to the database..m.aybe we can go with more of a gallery type interface for this?)
4. texture library
5. Cg artist direcotry
6. I'm sure there's others, just, what?
04-16-2003, 03:14 PM
sorry, I'm all confused, I keep forgetting things....(2 tests today....yawn...)
Brad, do you want to do the vector image things for the "staff"?
Azazel, the layout is here: http://graphite.f2o.org/images/cgsearch6
This is not the finale, we're missing some blue tentacles and a few more tweaks by me...
I've seen your amazing 2d work Azazel, and maybe you can give the layout some crits?
Also, if you guys think of any more categories of things we want to have searched on cgsearch, feel free to holler...:scream:
TUTORIALS@!!! I forgot those....ok, what else have I forgotten? ...hmmm....I have forgotten what I have forgotten, if that makes any sense....I'll see if I can't think of what I'm missing today sometime....
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you guys who've shown interest in this, as it started out, I had no idea that anyone wanted to help, it was just going to be a link archive, but now.....my mind swirls with wonderful thoughts...
THANKS A TON!!!
Oh, top secret stuff....If we get everythign designed like we all want, and coded successfully, and maybe get enough links to be useful, I'll be sure to see if I can't get us plugged at cgtalk, ok? I've already hinted at it to a few of the "powers that be"...so we'll just have to make it awesome, ok?
04-16-2003, 03:23 PM
Are You sure You wan't to host reference images? That'll eat a lot of bandwidth.... and on free accounts it may be a problem. Wouldn't the links be enough?
As for the layout, I think these decorative elements, while being very nice, occupy too much of the space, and there's not enough place to display search results...
04-16-2003, 04:16 PM
Azazel, I think I may have got you confused...
That's not the size of the full page!!!
it will be much longer, but we will able to put it together with css or some other type of coding (brent will do this) and it will be MUCH longer...
I apologize if you thought that was all the space that would be there for the links...
I'm also going to shrink the "visual stuff" a bit, I just want them big enough so we can put the buttons on there and have them readable....
I have an idea, why don't we just take off the section that says "search results" and just have the graphics for the searching?
and the search results just go down below it?
tell me what you think...please...
04-16-2003, 04:49 PM
Hey, azazel, do you use msn messenger?
I'd like to hear your ideas, and maybe you can help me get ideas for another skin?
I'd like to have more than one skin, for the forum and the search site...
I don't know, I'd also like to hear your ideas, all of you, for how we can build a small community around this?
04-16-2003, 06:28 PM
I think I may have got you confused...
Certainly not ;) I'm using old machine for web browsing, and have display resolution set to 800 x 600, and what is on Your image is exactly what I'd see if it was real ;) For someone using higher res it wouldn't be any problem.
see for yourself: http://members.lycos.co.uk/eltazar/screenshot.jpg
I don't use msn messenger, prefer ICQ, only heve to dig out my password from somewhere, lost it in system reinstallation :annoyed: I think I'll get new one asap.
04-16-2003, 06:33 PM
maybe big is a relative term?
I'm on a 800x600 at school, also, and although the graphics take up the whole screen, I think they look quite nice...
I WILL scale it down a bit, just for you, and make the thing where the results will be longer...I will work quite a bit on it tonight and tomorrow, if I can, depending on if my lawnmower gets fixed or not (I'm hoping the latter....hehe...big yard, small mower...)
I sadly forbid myself from using ICQ, though I'm on mIRC on cgtalk's channel only when I'm really bored...
It can be accessed online, with nothing installed, I can show you how, if you'd like?
I'm gonna work a lot on the graphics, so is the biggest complaint right now from everyone that it's too big? I can fix that, I think...I know someone said something about a "down the middle approach" so I'm thinking somewhere around 700 instead of 780 width will work better?
I can make those changes quite quickly, and I"ll post what I come up with, ok?
04-16-2003, 06:45 PM
I'd better get myself msn messenger ;)
I think they look quite nice... I agree, it's nice, but not necessarily useful ;) Make it all bit smaller and should be OK ;)
04-16-2003, 10:53 PM
ok, you'll have to have a hotmail account to use it, k?
firstname.lastname@example.org that's my email, if you want to....
We had a funeral for a lilfamilymember...ie, a duck...as I'm the burialist, I'll get to the graphics tonight...must go outside and relieve stress....grrr....
Azazel, I WILL shrink them quite a bit, just for you...and keep them crits coming...
04-17-2003, 01:34 AM
Man, azazel, I was looking at that picture of how large the layout is on your screen...man, do you have a ton of applications running!!!
How do people work like this?!!!
04-17-2003, 03:51 AM
ha ha ton of applications.. You should see my screen when I am web designing lol. I get lost all of the time he he. I like the layout though I agree it should be smaller, well shorter I guess, there is too much space teaken up above and the search results will be what the browser is after.
I can code a "report this link" option, I will do that vector image thingy, but only when I find the time he he. Besides it's not needed until we get a layout up.
We shouldn't host reference images on the free accounts. I wouldn't bring that feature unless we find a good web host with some serious bandwidth allowance. Same goes for textures.
We will have to make sure we always know what's going on with the editing process because it would suck if my coding wasn't working with the layout, also we don't want to overwrite each others latest updates so we will have to be very organized. I might have to mess with some graphics myself while I am coding to get things working (eg: the textures button could be highlighted while in the textures area)
Yeah I'm sure you all know this stuff, I'm just rambling he he. Looking good so far :scream:
04-17-2003, 08:39 AM
man, do you have a ton of applications running!!!
four of these icons on the taskbar are actually one app - Cinepaint (filmGimp), I'm playing with that recently ;)
Brad, highlight idea seems good, that'll make navigation easier ;)
04-17-2003, 09:52 AM
Ooh, that just gave me an idea, well it's nothing new but I didn't think of it until you mentioned highlighting, I'll make it put all search terms in bold print in the results. I don't know why but I like that feature, can help you scroll through a long article to find the area you are looking for.
*Offtopic* I am animating my demo reel weeee finally lol. Hours upon hours of animation... so tired. This is why I'm surfing cgtalk of course :P
Yeah so as far as I can tell for cgsearch we will have the following, though some of course may not be implemented:
- A searchable database of links.
- MANY Categories and sub-categories.
- highlighted search terms
- highlighted navigation buttons based on area (maybe on mouseover also?)
- Sub areas including textures, diagrams, tutorials etc..
- multiple skins (registered users may choose desired skin)
- registered users may submit links, tutorials, artist sites etc..
- a single membership allows access to cgsearch perks, forums, and all affiliated "cg" sites.
- weee it's free!
- I can't think of any more.
Do I have this right so far? and what did I miss? I am sure there's lots he he.
04-17-2003, 01:13 PM
The more I look into the reference images and the blueprints section, along with talking to a few of the leaders of the sites that are leaders in those areas, I think I'm beginning to agree with Azazel, let's just have links in those areas for now, ok?
I'm finding that there is quite a bit of work to go into those, and I'd like to implement them later, instead of now, ok?
Although, I strongly feel that if we can do the textures section, and provide high-quality textures, bump maps, whatever...you texturing guys should know what's needed, we can still provide a valuable service to the community...
*get back on topic, trent, you're rambling...
So, here's the MAIN categories I have so far (each of these will have their own little button, how nice...):
*EACH OF THESE CATEGORIES NOW ONLY HAS LINKS EXCEPT FOR THE TEXTURES SECTION, OK?!!
- web (all the links that don't fit under one of hte other sections)
-reference images (will have sub-categories, for blueprints, humans, animals, etc...should finish the HUGE outline of categories today sometime, then I'll post them and let you guys add/subtract what you want...)
- tutorials (will have sub-categories, as all things...)
- Something more I just can't think of it now
ON THE BOTTOM TABS;
- Search (this tab will be the closest to the big search entry form thing...like it will be highlighted all the time? I'll see if I can't work on that some more today...
- MySearch (kinda their forum profile, AND maybe, like you know how on your "subscribed threads adn forums" maybe we can do a "latest searches also"?)
Oh, and to complicate things further...I'm gonna see if I can't make 2 or 3 tabs where the search results box is...I've got a few ideas for that, and when you click the tab, it stays within the search results box... Here's what I was thinking:
- search results (kinda a no brainer, I know)
- Staff (I don't think there's room for that awesome art of yours on the top interface..)
-forums ( I think we can have the forums in that, and take off the header of the forums, so it looks more integrated?)
I would like to do the textures section, but make sure we have them optimized pretty good, I'll work with Julius (he's already called that section, me thinks) and make sure we optimize them just a bit...Now, we CAN do the textures section later, like if and when we get someone to pay for that little box that says "sponsor banner"...hehe...btw, WHO HERE HAS A PAYPAL ACCOUNT, WE'VE GOT TO FIND A WAY THAT AS SOON AS WE GET A SPONSOR AND THEY START PAYING, THEY HAVE A PLACE TO PUT IT...
Also, what ideas do you guys have for some more skins...I know we're not finished with this one, but I do hope that I can get a more finalized version today to post...
Also, any ideas for a logo? I've never been very good with them, as it seems I'm not so great at webdesign, either, but I have to do something, ya know.. besides that....hehe...
I'm sure I left soemthing out...someone slap me and correct me here and there please....
Oh, and for those of you whose email didn't have a little link in it, I think you all need to see this, it has totally proved to me that we do NOT need the blueprint pictures, just the links for now...MAJOR LEGAL STUFF, I THINK...
Especially read the latter part closely, kinda funny, kinda scary...
04-17-2003, 01:22 PM
Brad, sorry, was posting without reading:
-highlighted search thingies in the search results if AWESOME, I, too like this feature, especially helpful when searching and it's in context with other stuff, so you kinda already know what they're talkign about...
- highlighted buttons AND rollovers sounds nice, I'll see if I can go ahead and make a few different ones and see which you guys like better, ok?
- oh, and on that "cgsearch login name allows access to the other cgfeatures"...we're not that far along yet, don't want to scare Azazel on our hugely grand scheme, eh?
We'll wait and scare him LATER!! ! ! *insert evil laugh*
Everything sounds good, and if I can only stop browsing and posting long enough to work on that layout, we should be able to have a nice long Easter break, eh? (got a research paper to do....hehe...and a 700+ page book review that I haven't even started on!! cg is so evil towards my schoolwork...)
04-17-2003, 01:29 PM
Easter break??? no fair! I'll be at school plugging away at my demo reel ;) He he I dont even get to see my family for several more months  Ooh, I actually got up enough nrerve to post in the wip section he he I hope I don't get too torn apart lol. I can't wait to see this "updated" layout :D oooh tentacles... I mean.. secrets...
04-17-2003, 01:31 PM
Don't know if we'll have tentacles by this afternoon or not, Julius isn't on...he's usually online right now...as it's about 4 in the afternoon there....*sigh*
04-17-2003, 01:43 PM
I'm actually pretty excited about getting the whole link database going. I'll add those categories when we pin down the ones we want. I'll also have to work out some way of having parent/child category relationships, I forget, how many layers do the categories have? just main-sub? or are there some Main-sub-sub-sub's? The latter is easy to code, the former... eep he he, but still possible. Almost time to go home and sleep weeee. Oh yeah I'll keep quiet about all of the amazingly huge plans that we have. Just so I won't.. you know.. scare anyone off ;) he he he
04-17-2003, 01:45 PM
Excuse me...I'm confused...
HOw is Main-sub-sub-sub easier to code than Main-sub ?
oh, and before you go to sleepyweepy, here's something to cause you indigestion... http://graphite.f2o.org/images/cgsearch7
I think I took a wrong turn somewhere...SOMEONE TELL WHAT TO CHANGE...
EDIT: 8 pages....weeee....over 800 post count....weeee....today is a good day...
04-17-2003, 01:50 PM
lol can you tell I'm tired? I mixed up former and latter... yeesh..
PS ok there are a few things about the graphic I am not fond of, it seems to me like there are several light sources, you have conflicting drop shadows.
On the lower right triangle jutting out, it's drop shadoow is different than the others above it. The large area below the search box looks like it is bent towards me. like it is bending over what is below it rather than hovering above it.
04-17-2003, 01:58 PM
updated...I think...probably can't tell anychanges, but, yes, they're there....
And even more changes....
btw, how large does the graphics need to be? this next update is right at 40KB....
04-17-2003, 03:22 PM
playing with it some more....this is so much fun!
04-17-2003, 04:21 PM
Hey I like that last one, but I think the background color should be a lighter blue for more contrast :scream:
PS. I love the :scream: emoticon !!
04-17-2003, 10:04 PM
don't want to scare Azazel on our hugely grand scheme, eh?
why should I be scared?????? ;)
I agree with Brad, last one is nice
04-17-2003, 10:05 PM
Oh, good, Azazel, you like the last one, eh?
me and brad's been working on it all day, give me a sec to upload it...see that 13, we're up to v20..hehe...
04-17-2003, 10:11 PM
hmm...seems I can only find a 19
me and brad are pretty happy with it, tell us what you think...
PS, if you don't like the things above the sponsor boxes...I'm kinda fond of them....*sniff* I hope you like them...
Oh, I'm NOT done editing them, and we're still waitng on some tentacles....just a few...hehe...
I'll also probably start on the logo sometime this weekend, though I haven't got any ideas yet...
04-17-2003, 10:13 PM
Oh, and I know the right side is a bit large, I wnated to leave some room for those tentacles...I can edit that easily...
Tell us how it looks on your comp, Azazel, please...
Oh, and as far as us scaring you....*sigh* if you really want the 3 page idea document I snet out, just holler...hheeh...though it might scare something awful when you see just how my ideas are..hehe...
04-17-2003, 10:16 PM
PS, if you don't like the things above the sponsor boxes...I'm kinda fond of them....*sniff* I hope you like them...
I like them too.....
Right side is good, I wan't to see those tentacles, too ;)
04-17-2003, 10:19 PM
You like it?
Man, I need some things to change!!
Brent, my brother, said something about it's not sharp enough, kinda blurry all over, so I'll see what I can do about that....anything else?
I'm sure there's something you want on there, or something taken off, tell me!!!
Oh, any ideas for a logo?
I kinda thought do an x-box text effect with cgsearch, along with that magnifying glass tutorial my brother found...
04-17-2003, 10:26 PM
it's not sharp enough, kinda blurry all over, ]
That's maybe due to PS shadows....You can make them sharper.......
If You wan't to take something off, I'd say make the top area not so tall, don't change the design of it or anything, just not so tall...You can try to add some other colors, but not too much ;)
Man, I feel like I'm on chat or something... have too sleep now ;)
04-18-2003, 07:45 AM
for the "Our sponsors" text I'd make it white, or a brighter color so it is more readable. and we'll have to get some text on those tabs. for the staff art, we should have a "staff" button and just have it appear in the large display area. No need to try and integrate it into the upper layout.
04-18-2003, 09:18 AM
totally agree, brad...
04-18-2003, 10:29 PM
Well, as we come to the near close of this skin, me thinks, here's yet another update for you guys...
Now, later tongiht, i'll post some work on the logo, if I stink at webdesign, I'm REALLY bad at logos, so it'll take quite a few critiques, but make sure you give them to me...I can't make what you want if you don't tell me, ok?
just be as harsh and as constructive as you can, if it's possible...
oh, and I know the borders on the sponsor boxes are a weird blue, I'll change that back to the grey if you guys won't no biggie, I was just testing it out to kinda get a feel of what the tentacles color might need to be...not sure...
Oh, and I've heard a few things that some people don't like the large search result's area being that grey, anyone like it or not? it's up to you guys, if you want it changed, tell me!!!
04-18-2003, 10:36 PM
I know, I know, you guys probably hate that I ask you about everything, but I want to involve you guys as much as I can and as painlessly as I can...I think
logo ideas, really, really, simple, I want your imput from the very beginning:
04-19-2003, 03:10 AM
Hey, what happened to those cool thin grey bars you had on the layout? I really liked those
Yeah the logo should be all cool like the layout, blue, glowy, other neat words. Though it shouldn't blend in or anything. In my mind I see blocky, close set letters, all capitals.
I think Capital C/S looks better i.e CgSearch. also if you look at it CgTalk done the same.
04-19-2003, 03:45 AM
Well this is true, I actually meant sort of the same thing, all capitals, but the first letter in each word is a larger size. I don't know, just my $0.02 :D
04-19-2003, 12:52 PM
Brad, I'll put back the grey lines, no prob..
Ok, I think I've got just the thing, one sec...
04-19-2003, 01:08 PM
I'm gonna try out a few more text kinds, logos aren't my thing...
here's my procees, feel free to laugh at it:
figure out capitals
figure out text kind
then special effects...
04-19-2003, 01:10 PM
I'm gonna take this opportunity to ask:
Is everyone pretty happy with the layout? any sore spots, or are we about ready to go on towards the logo, then the rollovers, then tentacles...btw, we don't have any tentacles, I have no idea how to make them, but I can find a tut somewhere....
04-19-2003, 01:56 PM
Usually you put logo in the upper left part of the screen ;) And black text on dark-blue bg is not to good to read, white or generally something bright should be better.
I saw tentacles tut somewhere on the net, quite nice effect it produced ;)
04-19-2003, 02:36 PM
It's not going to be black, I'm just asking about the general text type and size...
I know it's a long ways from finished, and I apologize that I work so slow, graphics is kinda new to me...
I'll hunt around for a tentacle, thanks for the advice, Azazel..
04-19-2003, 02:55 PM
04-19-2003, 03:00 PM
yeah, and they could slide out at the beginning too?
that might look cool, though I don't know flash...might have to force brent to do it, eh?
04-19-2003, 03:09 PM
Hmm, I could probably do it. I mean I did say i wanted to stay away from graphics, but I meant the whole creating them process, making them slide around is ok :D
04-19-2003, 03:10 PM
ok, that sounds super!
now, I'm looking for a few tuts for cool text effects, any ideas?
me and brent will make the idea I had tonight, if we get back from out of town in time...
04-19-2003, 03:33 PM
Hmm, I think www.phong.com has some good ones.
04-19-2003, 03:36 PM
hey, brad, I've been browsing a bunch of other sites' advertising details page, I've got a few ideas, I'll see if I can't write them down on the way out of town...
thanks for the linkage..hehe..
04-21-2003, 02:42 PM
update: I'm going to start on a newer, lighter skin for the default, one that's not so graphics intense, OK?
I've got some ideas, but feel free to throw out any and all you have that you'd like to be built by a newb webgraphics artist, namely, myself...
04-22-2003, 02:12 AM
Hmmm, there's still a lot of people on the internet that don't have flash... artists are more likely to have it, but not always.
Also, you sure you want a forum for a search engine site? It would make sense to let people add links, but not necessarily to have a forum.
I'll grab what links I have, although with 10 pages on this thread people have probably already posted everything I've got for art-related links.
04-22-2003, 02:45 AM
all links are more than welcome...thanks!
04-22-2003, 11:19 AM
woohoo! I got the forums totally integrated with the rest of the site. Now we can have a sitewide login :D next i work on making a new "links submitted" stat
04-22-2003, 05:19 PM
though I have NO IDEA how you did this without the site actually made...
Did I say you're a genius? well, I LIED, YOU'RE BETTER!! ! !! !
/me is so happy...
let's celebrate, I'll get the Kool-aid
oh, and I've been asking around on the new "lite" layout, and several already like it!!
oh, and talked to a few people about changing hte old layout some and adding tentacles...hehe...
04-22-2003, 09:46 PM
he he he check out the admin section now :D oh yes it's integrated with forums too :D so you have to be a forum admin to be able to access it :D he he. This is fun stuff. And now you dont need to put your name in to submit a link it uses your logged in ID. Can you say Wee? I bet you're itching to add 1000's of links to the database :P ha ha ha. Oh yeah I really do like the lite layout more than the last one. It looks very slick :D
04-22-2003, 09:50 PM
Yeah as for the forums, even if we don't use them as forums, we can use them as our user management system and keep them hidden in the background. It is very organized. But I do think having forums would be nice. Even just for general chatter and questions.
I would hide your forums a bit or at least not make them a huge part of your site. there are about a million and five forums in the world and 1 million of them go unused.
04-23-2003, 04:09 AM
the forums will just compliment and supliment the site, not be the main attraction...

links, links and more links should be our main attraction. That is, easy to browse and search categorized links that reach into the thousands and relate to every realm a cg artist will ever need to search for a link for... whew... And hopefully one day we can host some of our own stuff, images and such for easier access for the arteests. :scream:
04-23-2003, 02:25 PM
alright, I'm gonna look over the categories you made on the admin panel, brad, and I think add/subtract a few, I'll tell you which, ok?
04-23-2003, 02:38 PM
Ok, organizational post:
Current Searchable Categories of Links (CSCL-nifty acronym I came up with...we won't use it, don't worry..hehe...)
***this is in order of importance to an artist, tell me if I got it wrong****
Now, here's the list so far of subcategories: (taken from the admin cp, ok, brad?)
Digital Media 2D
Graphic Card Vendors
Motion Capture Hardware
Video Editing Hardware
Composting + Editing
Ok, now the CHANGES I'd really like made:
-Put them in the order that I suggested at the top.
-Have 2 drop down menus, first, the categories, then the second one showing ONLY the sub-categories in that specified category, if this is possible, I think it'd clear up a lot of confusion, ok?
-We do need a "Texturing & Surfacing" category, even just for the links for now, sub categories can be: textures, UV Mapping, Bump Maps, Displacement Maps, SHADERS, and whatever else you guys see the need for, since it's very easy to add/delete/edit categories thanks to brad...
So far, I think you've pretty much covered everything as far as sub-categories go, and I have an idea:
-Once we get a good sponsor then a good host, and we switch over to also adding pictures, we can still have the links that are under the picture sections (reference, textures) we can put the links under the search box on the right side, ok?
I'll see if I can't come up with some "advanced search fields" for each of the categories, sometime today hopefully:wavey:
04-23-2003, 04:41 PM
I'm not happy with Digital Media 2D under Artists category, line between 2d and 3d is often blurry ..... of course some people do only 2d work, but many use mixed techniques
04-23-2003, 07:56 PM
Yeah I know what you mean, I am thinking of having some way for 1 artists to appear in several categories, the same goes for links.
04-23-2003, 10:42 PM
how about just :
04-23-2003, 10:46 PM
We could do that. Even so I better implement what I mentioned in my last post. I'll try to get the admin page like you want it soon. Got any layout updates? I know you are busy with that paper, so please don't feel like you have to get anything done, just wondering :D
04-23-2003, 11:41 PM
No, no work on that layout, and no work on the paper, either...
I was outside mowing all day, now sunburned, and tired...
I'll see if I can't stay up tonight some and either work on my paper tonight after church and finish it tomorrow, or work on the layout a bit...
Sorry guys, it seems I'm the one slowing the project down, I'll get to it tonight if I can and post an update...ok?
I should have worked on it earlier, instead of beign lazy, it's catching up to me in the end...:wip: :wip: :wip:
04-24-2003, 12:15 AM
hey man don't worry about it, we don't have deadlines and such so take your time, jump in a hottub, relax :D
04-24-2003, 02:17 AM
I'm more glad now than ever I never put a deadline on this...
wish I had a hot tub...a long shower shall have to do...
04-24-2003, 02:59 PM
TAking a break from my intro paragraph on the paper, just playing around with that layout you guys seem to like:
04-24-2003, 03:01 PM
also, brad, did you notice when we were looking at 3dtotal's banner stuff, that the 2 long "skyscraper" banners on the side are where that all the viewers on 600x800 wouldn't see them?
hmm...whihc makes me think...you want us to try that and see how it looks?
04-24-2003, 08:07 PM
well, worked some more on the layout...
I'm gonna go take a nap and see if inspiration can hit me and I do my research paper tonigth...
04-24-2003, 09:07 PM
I like the nav bar on no.4 but not no.5 I think it looks better without the bar on the bottom. Get that paper done :p hehehe.
04-25-2003, 01:28 AM
ok, brad, don't know what happened, you said "going to get lunch" then 2 hours later, you're still not back...
So, don't know when you'll get this, but:
DON'T START SLICING UP THE LAYOUT YET! ! !!
I STILL NEED TO GO OVER SOME THINGS BOTH ON THE LAYOUT AND WHAT CONTENT WILL GO WHERE WITH YOU!!!!
I'M STILL NOT FINISHED COMPLETELY WITH THE LAYOUT, STILL SOME TWEAKING TO DO AFTER MY PAPER IS FINISHED! ! ! ! !
04-25-2003, 01:44 AM
eep! *runs away* I won't touch it!!!
04-25-2003, 03:41 AM
Well, some links. Hope some of them are new to people.
INDIE FILM MAKING:
INDIE GAME MAKING:
INDIE MUSIC SELLING:
http://www.freessl.com (I think, it may be a .net or .org) get a free ssl cert for low-volume or testing purposes.
I have a few art links too, but it'll take a while to dig them out of the mess that is my favorites folder.
04-25-2003, 07:14 PM
Well, what a nice collection of links Brassfire, thanks!!!
Ok, guys, not super sure where everyone is, but your absence right now is NEEDED for me to finally finish (sorry I"m so sloooww) the layout.
I'm somewhat shocked that you guys like this layout, and since it's quite a bit more...err....graphics unintensive, it won't take me long to finish, I just want to tweak a few things, and talk to brad about some of the more tweaking things, then it'll be finished.
After this skin is finished, I'll re-tweak the first one, and I've got a really cool idea for a take-off on this new layout (think, same layout, with a super organic flowing thingie all over...hehe...)
Even if this project dies right now, I've learned quite a bit about making graphics, and how long it takes....hehe....
Ok, give me and brad a few more weeks to finish tweaking, and to get it coded, and learn how to make a forum skin, then be expecting a HUGE private release (this project is still super top secret, hehe..) so all of us can start getting adjusted to a new home, get the furniture moved around...hehe...and START SUBMITTING LINKS! ! ! !
Then, right now, my goal is 1000 links! ! ! !
Then, once we get that, we'll realy have a public release, ok?
So, no deadline, just a goal, but I think we could definetly have 1000 links easy before we start school this fall, eh?
04-25-2003, 09:53 PM
Yeah hopefully unless I hit a massive block, but I think I can handle everything we want to implement. I just hope I don't make any severe coding mistakes that cause security holes and the like lol.
04-25-2003, 09:54 PM
Don't worry brad, oh, and expect an update soon, been tweaking quite a bit..he.e...
04-25-2003, 10:15 PM
Sweet, I'm at school right now, but feel free to LINK ME UP lol, I love seeing updates and such.
04-25-2003, 10:35 PM
04-25-2003, 11:01 PM
Looks good. I'm not sure if we should have the "total links" thing on that tab. I was thinking of just having it in the area below that. What happens when we hit 94236239823 links and it stretches our poor layout? I like the text on the buttons, looks clean. I hope we have room for the whole "logged in as blah blah" thing on the tab you have the login area. I mean I'll have it so if you are logged in the login fields go away which leaves us more room, but I'm not sure if it is enough. I'll see what parts of that I can trim out. Or perhaps we can extend that tab a bit. Looking great though
04-25-2003, 11:05 PM
Oh yeah it still needs a bottom bar :D
04-25-2003, 11:06 PM
ok, I think there'd be enough room...
You just do what you feel is needed, brad, and I did extend that tab a bit, I can extend it more if you want...
04-25-2003, 11:07 PM
04-25-2003, 11:09 PM
yeah pretty much instead of just ending at the bottom of the graphic, have something that comes underneath it. To make it flow nice I guess. It doesn't have to be massive or anything, just something to terminate the page. We can put the copyright there too
04-25-2003, 11:10 PM
good idea, completely forgot aobut it!!!
I'll get right on it tonight, or tomorrow morning sometime! ! ! !
Thanks, brad, don't know what I'd do without you...
04-25-2003, 11:12 PM
Well, trying to ask lild about a plug, I think I scared him off....:D
04-25-2003, 11:24 PM
ha ha I wouldn't worry about a plug until we go for the public release. :p
04-26-2003, 12:51 AM
I know that logo looks weird, I'm just playing with ideas...lild said he'd have to review the site and see how much work we've put into it and how good it is, so we've got that covered, right? :D
Just tell me what you like/don't like, just holler...
04-26-2003, 01:14 AM
You probibly don't want the attention of a Plug till you go public.
I mean you don't need that kind of attention yet do you?
04-26-2003, 01:20 AM
he he he looks really good. I like that logo idea a lot. :D and there is waaay too much text on that bottom part lol, we should stick with "Copyright © 2003, CgSearch"
04-26-2003, 01:23 AM
I know, I know, I just put that there to bug you...
Oh, JIII, you're right, I just like to keep lild updated everynow and then...:D
He won't plug us until we super duper ask him nicely...:wavey:
still playing with the tiny stuff, zooming in at 300% to see sore spots close-up...:wip:
04-26-2003, 01:24 AM
oh, brad, let me make sure I read this right
I like the logo
Are you serious?
It's so far from looking good it's scary..hehe....it looks horrible!!!
04-26-2003, 01:32 AM

I like where it's going, so keep going! I like the g in the C thingy a lot, though it does remind me of an @ symbol. Simple is good. Make it too flashy and Crazy and it just becomes another flashy crazy logo. I find that simple can be the most effective sometimes.
04-26-2003, 01:33 AM
well, update (look at the logo...hehe...)
04-26-2003, 01:49 AM
ha ha it's a happy logo, I'll give you that. I don't think that's what we're going for though lol.
04-26-2003, 01:51 AM
aww...I was beginning to like him...
update, worked on the wording of the copyrith thing, also, where do I get eh @ copyright symbol??
04-26-2003, 01:55 AM
well we should put that text on a different page reachable by a link on the bottom. That will clean it up a lot more. example:
something like that.
The © symbol might be under some insert menu, or maybe you can type in html or something like that and typr & copy; without the space.
04-26-2003, 01:55 AM
good idea...I'll keep working on it...
04-26-2003, 01:56 AM
Or I could just type it when I make the webpage using text.
04-26-2003, 02:01 AM
try this same link, again, I overwrited it with and updated one..hehe..trying to conserve space...
04-26-2003, 02:09 AM
04-26-2003, 02:11 AM
you might want to click again, I just uploaded a newer version, with a different mascot...
04-26-2003, 02:15 AM
aaah! he's evil! Actually it's sorta growing on me, though it blends in waaay too much with that blue color.
04-26-2003, 02:16 AM
we do have one small problem...now, if he's (it's) growing on us, what are we goign to do with that big space on the left side? I had left room for a logo, but now, if we both like it....
you want like orange or red eyes?
04-26-2003, 02:18 AM
04-26-2003, 02:19 AM
Maybe move the slogan down there somehow?
04-26-2003, 02:19 AM
patronizing me will get you nowhere, young man :shame:
04-26-2003, 02:23 AM
Mu ha ha ha. Oh come on, you know you like it  he he he. Well I do like the design, it's better than anything I could do. Honest!
04-26-2003, 02:31 AM
I know, I know, wrong turn somewhere...
04-26-2003, 02:32 AM
ha ha yeah I'd say so... lol
04-26-2003, 02:41 AM
sorry guys, Trent wanted me to inform yall that he got booted off the comp so he won't be doing any more updates tonight unless something else changes... he said something about that he will work on it some more later..I think?
04-26-2003, 03:24 AM
gotta love that power of persuasion! ! ! !:wip:
oh, yeah, update...trying different things with logos....
04-26-2003, 03:53 AM
still playing with logos...
I had not looked at your design for a while but man that looks nice, I love the caps what are YOU looking for.
they add real personality to it.
you should keep umm.
04-26-2003, 06:30 AM
he he I am liking the logo placement, maybe make the C more visible. and get rid of one of the "what are you looking for" 's Oh yeah I think I spotted me another C guy in the upper right corner lol. Where did he come from?
04-26-2003, 08:05 AM
"what are you looking for is" ok, but should be less pronounced, smaller and placed somewhere else IMO. Whole Cgsearch logo should be more pronounced for a change (more contrasting color for example).
04-26-2003, 12:17 PM
any suggestions for the color?
and brad, I put them both on there so you guys could tell me where you'd rather it...hehe...:wip: :wip:
I know, I know "get back to work, trent! ! !:wip: :wip:

I'm still shocked that you guys are liking this design...I guess it's kinda growing on me, too, with the new logo...ehe..
Did I mention I STINK at making logos?
Any suggestions how to make it more pronouned...errrr..contrasting?
I'll post an update soon, minor little changes...
I don't mind, we can tweak this design for another whole week if you guys want, I just want you guys to be proud of it and want to have your say...
04-26-2003, 12:48 PM
04-26-2003, 01:14 PM
Got bored...:wip: :wip: :wip:
And NOW, at a whopping 7 KB, here's a sig I was making:
what size are sigs supposed to be?
04-26-2003, 01:27 PM
hey, is someone can help me with the dimensions of the sig, I can probably make a sig for every skin I make, they're easy...
SOMEONE HELP ME ON A LOGO! ! ! !
I'm stuck, all the colors I've tried (yellow, orange, red, green, and everything in between ) all look yucky..:hmm:
04-26-2003, 05:41 PM
Maybe try some nice small pixel font for the buttons, even without shadows? That could also go for "what are you looking for is". For an example, type something in PS in verdana font, size 8-10 , and turn off antialiasing. Usually looks nice.
To exagerrate logo more, bright outline might be better than dark:shrug: Have You tried making only these "eyes" red/orange? Just wondering.
04-26-2003, 05:48 PM
04-26-2003, 06:02 PM
I forgot : never ever use bold font without antialiasing :) It must be very thin to look good ;)
Red eyes were bad idea:annoyed:
you have got great asthetic sence unlevel you can really tell the way something should "fit" together
also you have been staring at this for so long you will start to devlop these type of still on your own.
I learned how to design things by staring for hours and hours at my starwars collection when I was a bit younger. and tweaking every litttle thing.
04-26-2003, 06:23 PM
Oh, and JIII, I'm still learning, so don't start bragging on me till I make something good for once...hehe...:wavey: :wip:
04-26-2003, 06:29 PM
oh, and you're right on target about the tweaking, so far:
1st skin: 19 versions
2nd skin (this one): 17 versions so far, I'm expecting AT LEAST 10 more...
sig: 3 versions so far...
tweaking and patience is the key, I guess, cause I've never done any graphics before
04-26-2003, 06:36 PM
Looking good, I don't really like the eyes. They looked the best the same color as the text.
04-26-2003, 07:08 PM
alright, I can fix them back easy...
so, are we just about done with it?
finals so far:
On the team:
Admins: unlevel and BooRadley
Mods: Azazel, ....
Brent hasn't helped at all, and I don't know where Insect666 is, so Azazel, you're all alone right now, I guess...
From now on, me and brad with both discuss any additional mods, so, JIII, if you're interested, you got my vote...but I'll have to talk to brad bout it...
I WANT ALL OF YOU GUYS TO TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE GRAPHICS, OR ARE WE DONE?
If so, I can start right away on the next skin, while...me and brad, if we are done, can start slicing, coding, and skinning...give us a couple of weeks, then the private assembly of links shall commence...
04-26-2003, 07:10 PM
hmm, I would antialias the text in the sig and sharpen the eyes in the layout
04-26-2003, 07:11 PM
do we want evil eyes?
like on the first few versions that had eyes?
or sad eyes? or what?
04-26-2003, 07:13 PM
I liked the evil personally :D  Mu ha ha ha ha.
04-26-2003, 07:24 PM
alright, keep crits coming, I'd like to finish this today...hehe...or tomorrow....or the next day....:wip: :wip: :wip:
oh, and for testing purposes, tell me if the layout loads faster for you...please...progressive jpeg's got to love 'em..
Oh, and for anyone who might wonder, I use fireworks, cause it keeps file sizes WAAAAYYYY down, at least in my opinion....this layout hasn't been optimized ANY, it's 100%, and 116 KB...
Oh, and do you like the font for the "gsearch" or do you like the metro font better?
EDIT: what size are sigs? isn't this one too small? It's 7 KB right now, it loads faster than the smilies!!!
I'm gonna see if I can't make an avatar real quick, kinda getting tired of my old one...
04-26-2003, 07:37 PM
Yeah it loads good and fast for me. I think that's a good size for the sig, I don't think there are any rules with that. You mind if I use the sig as well? We can get the word out faster mu ha ha, besides it's purty. :D
04-26-2003, 07:38 PM
you really like it?
04-26-2003, 07:40 PM
That was just a test sig, I'd like to make one a bit larger...and maybe have it actually look good...
Wish I knew where the lighting effects were in fireworks, I'll see what I can do...
04-26-2003, 07:45 PM
Yep I do indeed. :wavey:  :surprised :scream:  :airguitar :D
04-26-2003, 07:50 PM
Last one (layout) is ok.
04-26-2003, 08:03 PM
04-26-2003, 08:08 PM
Too busy ;)
04-26-2003, 08:09 PM
give me a sec...working on 1-2 more...
04-26-2003, 08:21 PM
I dont think the first one is too busy, I would cut out the "contact" though. I like it a lot actually.

04-26-2003, 08:31 PM
I like the last one :D What are these for anyways?
04-26-2003, 08:32 PM
don't really know...hehe..
EDIT: I guess I'm just bored, you guys won't crit the last layout...and tell me the harsh truth about what you want changed....
I'll work on any of these forever, I just want you guys to be happy with them...
04-26-2003, 08:39 PM
ooo ooo i like the second one..hehe:applause:
04-26-2003, 08:41 PM
Hey, waterhycinth, long time no see, eh?
Brad, you think I should make a bunch of these when I'm just playing around, and we have them as default avatars on the forum?
So people could use them if they can't get their own?
04-26-2003, 08:49 PM
hey back unlevel or should i call you by your real name? oh well...hehe
04-26-2003, 08:51 PM
Hmm, no, nobody would use them lol. I think we are the only ones completely obsessed with cgsearch :D lol.
04-26-2003, 08:52 PM
oh, well, then, I'll just chalk them up as goofed playtime toys...
04-26-2003, 09:49 PM
Ok, guys are we almost thru with the layout?
Calling all crits!! Calling all crits!!!
Just holler when you guys are tired of looking at it, and I can get to work on a forum skin, and brad can start coding...hehe...
hey brad....got a question....ya know how there's a bit of space on the main buttons under each section's name? do you think we need to put the ## of links in each category on that category's button???
like really small? or would that look weird?
ppssssttt....just noticed...I've got 900+ posts and we're at 16 pages!!!
04-26-2003, 10:11 PM
well, playing with saturation....and contrast...was that what you guys were trying to tell me?
And I did the contrast thing to
I think it looks much better now...might still play with it some, don't know....
04-26-2003, 11:30 PM
Oooh baby. I'm liking that layout. I think we can stick with that. It looks slick. I just talked to a buddy that might be interested in moderating some link submittals or something. He may post soon. :D Looking fine

I'll take that as you like it...hehe...
I started work on the forum skin thing, though I'm just doing the graphics and I'm like a blind person when it comes to actually making the skin...
we'll figure it out somehow...
04-26-2003, 11:33 PM
Yeah, that's the sad thing about links, we're going to have to have a nice "report bad link" system and I just got another idea. I may be able to create something that spiders through every link in the Database checking to see if it recieves a 404 or whhatever and putting a "good" or "bad" flag on them, just an idea I'll look into.
04-26-2003, 11:34 PM
*dreams*....you do that...hehe....
bad flags for 404's??? I haven't ever even heard of such!!!
04-26-2003, 11:37 PM
ok just found this set of links...might be useful for all cgtalk viewers.... link (http://www.3debug.tmi-sl.com/users/thorse/anim/links.html)
04-26-2003, 11:43 PM
whew, that'll take awhile to sort through he he, pooor unlevel... :D he he. Yeah I may be able to figure out some sort of link manager that we can run once a week or something. We'll see, I'll do some research. That'd be great if it was possible.
04-27-2003, 01:33 AM

Hey, I can probably do most of the skin, but the way I do it is just replacing the graphics...hehe...I do NOT know how to actually get another skin thingie going...
I think there's some way we can make a new skin based off the old one or something....
EDIT: *looks around suspiciously*....when did we get on page 17?
04-27-2003, 01:55 AM
Hmm, I know there is a way to import skins, I'll check it out tonight.
*edit* he he page 13 for me :P *edit*
04-27-2003, 02:18 AM
Oh, I think I've got a new skin, I did "make a new skin based off"
or something like that...:wip:
04-27-2003, 05:22 AM
Yeah I think I'm set to view 20 posts per page or something. I don't think we can have graphical sigs here on cgtalk :(
