View Full Version : Help with TP dust on impact

Hello 3d world,
wondering if anyone can help a brother out... Need to create a piece of animation where a rock smashes into a plane of some sort (the ground), the rock smashes into bits, and the impact throws all sorts of dust in the air. For the impact, I may or may not use dynamics (probably just as effective and much easier to keyframe), but the dust thing...? I've been scouring for tutorials that will lead me, as I really haven't wrapped my head around TP or Xpresso, so its difficult for me to repurpose tutorials that are EXACTLY what I'm trying to do. Has anyone come across such a tutorial, or can anyone just tell me "you do this, then that"?
I would reeeeeeally appreciate anyone's help in this a lot.

Hi,
check the attached scene. The dust is only a couple of spheres currently, but you can replace it with Pyrocluster, Stormtracer or simply a different shape.
The creation of the dust is not 100% satisfying, but i think it's ok if it isn't a closeup.

Hope this helps
Björn

Thanks srek.

From your file I just learned that you can keyframe the on button on the emitter! All this time I've been using the action timer for offestting an emitters action.

Thank you very much both for your quick reply and the file. In looking to open the file, unfortunately, I receive a "Unknown file format!" error message. I wonder if the file (probably) was created in R10? I'm presently using R9.6. If that is, in fact, the issue, is there a way to save the file for backward compatibility?
Once again, I really appreciate your help.

PS - I posted this reply a few minutes ago, but it doesn't seem to have posted. My apologies if this one, and the one from earlier both show up.

Sorry, it's an R10 file. Maybe load the R10 demo to see how it works.
As for posting, as a new user on this forum (welcome btw :) ) your first three postings need approval of a forums leader or CG Talk administration.

Cheers

I've downloaded the demo of R10, and sure enough your file opens beautifully. It seems exactly like the set-up I was hoping for. I've copied all of your settings as accurately as I was able, but don't really get the same results. I believe its to do with group assignments. I see that the TP standard Emitter is assigned to particle group 1, but can't find what you've assigned group 2 to. I assume this is the cause of my non-results. What I get is the rock flying into picture, the passing straight through the plane, and no resulting particles. I will keep dissecting your file until I come across the answer (hopefully), but in the mean time if you read this reply and are just dying to save hours / days / weeks of my life, I would be most greatful.
Maaaan - this Xpresso stuff - how do people learn it? I can actually hear little springs in my head snapping =)
I do, if it helps, have my file zipped for upload, but would be so presumptuous as to actually upload it without your request.
Thanks again (and again, and again, and again). You da man

Okay, I guess you can ignore my last post. It took some prodding and poking, but, at last - success. I can't thank you enough. Now, on to the business of refinement (making the dust look like dust, maybe adding some wind to the whole affair), the basic structure's in place thanks to you. You da man, man.

Glad you made it work :)

Feel free to share whatever you have made. All examples i share here or on my website are free to be used and shared by everyone interested. I only object to my stuff beeing sold as is in any way. If you use it as a part in a commercial project it's a-ok with me.

Cheers
