Hi everyone!

Ok here is my idea for this contest. I will make a scarecrow who is afraid of crows. So one of them will attack him and try to tear him apart with claws, while on the run. Here is the scarecrow sketch.

Good luck to everyone on the contest.

This is maya model. Very low poly, just basic shape. First I will create low poly model, than I will import that mesh inside mudbox and begin high res details, where I will also generate displacement map. Additional stuff will be added with bump map.

This is the new direction where I am headed. He will be runing with branches behind his back and between hands, to make him clumsy while on the run. Also his feet will be in X position which will make him a bigger coward. Coments and critiques are welcome.

Hey Darko, nice idea and model !! I really liked. I think the horizontal branches would have to be within the clothes and of the sleeves of the shirt, perhaps broken branches for not so rigid model, only a comment :) . Good luck and looking forward for updates

Thanx for support Ferx (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=283330). I think it is great idea to put horizontal branches within the clothes, so I incorporated that into model. Also the character will be in much more dynamic pose as it is now:)

I was able to put some more time into this entry. Here is what I did. I will create a wheat field and on the right side, there will be a dirty track with broken radioactive barrel. The background behind this picture is the environmental problem. The nuclear power plant has dump the radioactive waste into a near field, contaminating all the surrounding environment. So the birds have mutated and begin acting strange. I will put a nuclear power plant into the background with some heavy clouds above. This will also be a good opportunity for a drastic lightning. The idea about running scarecrow has also been dumped, so it will be in fixed position, which will add more tension into the image. Comments and critiques are appreciated.

I did some more work on scarecrow. This is the wip process in zbrush. I already had a good base mesh, so this was very quickly. I used high poly to bake normal maps, which will substitute bump map.

After sleepless nights and long lasting hours behind my monitor, I finally managed to finish this illustration. I would like to thank everyone who supported me and gave me some feedback.

Story:
Because of the polluted water in the nearby area the crows have mutated. The environment filled with radiation coused the birds to become aggressive. So they wreak their anger upon nearby scarecrow, who frightened them. Scarecrow tries to escape, but it is stuck in the mud. The rest is your own imagination :)

Good luck to all participant in this challenge. It was fun ride and I learned alot. I will post more work in progress as soon as I get my sleep.

I did some more progress. I added ambient occlusion pass on most of the stuff. Changed the character pose, to make it more dynamic. Birds have now different wings position. Added new flock in the background. New bump map for the ground. More fog in the back. The drinking crows are bigger. Fixed clouds. Final resolution is 2296*3450 px.

Here are some close up shots:

Hey guys.

Because The deadline has been extended, I did some more changes to the overall image. The character has tilted head . Birds are more dynamic. I added new flock. The ground have new bump map. Most of the stuff has now ambient occlusion pass overlayed. I was playing with the fog and environment abit more to change the mood of the picture. Here are some of the close up shots.

Carbone (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=115331): Thanx man. You are right about the lightning, hehe. Now that I look at it The sun should be more on the left. At first the initial idea was to do the main light from back, but because the resaults where not satisfactory, I changed the light direction. Thanx for pointing that out. It is so nice you noticed symbolism between birds and scarecrow.

simplified view of layers in photoshop, just to show how was it all composited into final image. Most of the models have been rendered separately with specular, reflection, shadow and ambient occlusion passes. Than composited in photoshop. Some of the effects, shadows, fog and reflections have been painted. Backround is a combination of photos and painting.

Great work, I think you have a good eye for detail. I am impressed with it:thumbsup: I only have one opinion about the toxic sludge that you have in the ground. I would make it stand out more because the sludge helps tell the story completely with out a naritve. The sludge also explains the reason why the scarcrow is alive to begin with. Of coarse its only one mans opinion :)

gpepper: Thanx for the replay man. I really appriciate your feedback.

nwiz25: Thanx mate. I am glad you like the workflow. To be honest it wasn't exactly planed from start to finish, the way it looks now. It was more like trial and error and adding stuff that looks good. It is basicly the first full image, and I did alot of experiments to come up with final look. The hardest part was to render and composite the whole scene. I learned alot and I plan to do full tutorial in near future.

Artisan-Hawks: Thank you for your constructive reply. I am happy that you like the final image. I wanted to emphasis the toxic sludge, but it was way to agressive and the picture lost it's focus. It would stick out too much if you look it from far. Thanx for you observation.

Nemesix: Thanx man. I am glad you like the colors and lightning. It was also my favourite color choice. Maybe scarecrow will eventually run away:) Who knows?

OKMER: Thanx mate for your kind words. I am happy also that I went trough the finish line.
