Hi ,mmmmh I think you need stronger composition for the fortress of solitude, that ship in the foregound is not helping , anyway I am a superman fan as well and I don't think there could be a ship around the fortress you know, there's no sea , there's only glacier around it . I know this is a skecth ,only and a first approach , but always think in your focal node, I would add more interesting ice formations than a man made stuff

Cheers james, I am doing as you previously suggested paint something that inspires me. this time I would like to do daylight matte. The ice crystals are proving a night mare, I designed a brush preset which gave me the structure, It is just working out the refraction. I put the ship in to show scale. I agree that it does not work. I just need something to suggest scale.
Cheers Rich.

Rich, If I make a suggestion, start with photo you have taken try to imagine surreal scene in that, then using brushes only start painting what you see. You do this couple times then it may be easier to start with a blank canvas on your next piece.

I am currently working on another project at the moment, i learnrt concept art at art college years before computers were first used. I have gone back to basics and started what i learnt just by using a wacom and a bit of imagination. I do get artists block at the moment as i feel inhibited with a blank canvas. Someone from another art forum has just suggested i scribble away and relearn shape and form using perspective. This superman idea is in my head just do not have the skills yet to communicate it. It is so damn hard, my friend at work has pestered to to learn to walk before running. I also dont want to be a photocollage monkey as Dylan Cole suggested I would love to learn to paint.
I will continue to put stuff up here but less regular than i have so far, inbetween I have stopped sketching on pads of paper i am now going to stick with wacom and pc till i feel comfortable. I can photograph anything I want, but I would love to paint beautifully with feeling and depth. Plus when you become HOD for some mattepainting job and you hear my name you will probaly pay me far greater respect thank some photo monkey. Because I will become a matte painter. I think I have come a long way from first ever post. i like to think so. I have been looking at the working practices of artists like Michael dashow, Thyn and a russian beauty by the name of Irhen I want to be good at what I do.
I was hit quite badly with the sad loss of Glen Angus the other week, so I must crack on and paint and paint. I miss the smell of gouache and the taste of sable in the morning.
Many regards
Rich.
Plus if you know of any sites that can show paths tool I would be more than happy as it is driving me bonkers.
