Jason seemed so happy in that interview. To most people, it looks like smooth sailing and a happy experience, but man, I know the blood, sweat, and tears behind Jason's success.
We were roomates for about 3 years, and this was right about the time he transitioned into 3D and video games. We were both starving artists, drawing/painting into the wee hours of the morning, taking cigarette breaks(we both quit now), talking about chicks..etc. Was bittersweet times.
Jason would produce illustration after illustration for White Wolf's RPG manuals, while I worked on my comic book series Enchanted. Things got so bad that Jason even had to work at a photocopy shop to make ends meet, while I had to work at a Consumer Electronics store.
Eventually, Jason saved up for a computer(I remember is was a dual P200, with 128 mb of RAM, 17" monitor, and a scanner), and started learning 3D. I had planned to save up for one too, and I got mine a bit after Jason got his(mine was a P400, 128mb RAM, 19" monitor).
Then, Jason got a job at Broderbund through a old college friend who was working on Prince of Persia 3D. Later, Jason got me in as well, painting textures on Prince of Persia 3D. While at Broderbund(then became Mindscape, then Mattel Interactive), Jason worked his ASS OFF. I watched him get up early, work hard all day, then stay after hours to do his own animation/digital art, and barely slept. He kept that up and improved so fast in 3D that it was awe-inspiring. I didn't put in nearly 1/10 of the effort he did in 3D, since I just didn't enjoy it--and shifted my interest to writing novels instead(so strange now that I've gone full circle and back to doing 3D).
After my contract was up on Prince of Persia, I moved onto other game companies, and eventually Jason moved on as well, doing animation at Savage Frog, then eventually settled at Nilhlistic/Blizzard.
Jason is one of the most patient, persistent, and passionate(the 3 P's!) artists I've ever met. He's only going to get better, and mark my words, he's got tricks up his sleeve that's gonna make you piss your pants.
