View Full Version : spline extruding
UberModeler 03-26-2003, 09:00 PM i made a spine of a knife blade type thing. i want to convert it to a epoly and extrude ,but when i convert it disappears and i cant select anything. i dont know much about spines and converting them, but when i make a spine circle and convert and extrude it works fine. but with this object its going all wrong. thanks for the help.

Double check your vertices. One of them is probably not welded.
This is usually the reason why a spline will not extrude. Hope this helps.

Yup, sounds like a vert prob to me. I had that happen when converting an AutoCAD 2d. Cleaned up some corners and
BADA BING!!!
Extrusion baby!:buttrock:

Convert to an epoly *then* extrude?
It's been my experience that using extrude on a spline will automatically convert it.
Also, you can't convert a spline to a mesh/epoly. That is, there has to be faces already present (like surface) for a spline 2 mesh/epoly conversion. Since there are no faces from a spline, nothing will be extruded and result in nothing.
Jeez. I hope that makes sense.
Copy the spline and then run extrude on one of them. Should work just fine.

Good point stroker. I missed that!
Don't convert to epoly until after you have extruded the spline.
There is a way to convert a spline shape to a flat plane. Pick the spline and then go to the modifier list and choose normal modifier. You will probably need to flip normals to see the poly you created. This will create a polygon out of a flat spline. Then collapse the stack to emesh and then convert to epoly.
I always convert to a epoly, there are a lot more tools to model with!

awesome tips guys ill go work on it now. what i did do before i read the posts is make a plane and shape merged the spilne onto the plane. coverted to an epoly and deleted the polies i didnt want then extruded. the only problem was there was no bottom to the extrusion and capping it makes the meshsmooth mess up big time of course so im stuck there so ill try it your way.....
also do you know why sometimes when you select an edge and you want to loop it, it wont loop?
thanks to all you have helped me so much

ok i took my spine and applied the normal modifier on it and it tried the 2 settings(flip and stuff) and it dissappered again.
then i tried extruding the spine without convertign first but there is no cap just the sides that makes it worthless....
sorry im so bad at this im just at my whits end trying to get a simple shape ready to subd model. maybe you guys know of a better approach? thanks

When you extrude the spline, there should be the option to cap the ends. If you tell extrude to cap the ends and it doesn't, well... maybe your spline is too complex...? I don't know. I've never had that problem.
If you have to, you could go with nurbs.

well after playing with it a while i finally got it to work sorta. just have lots of repairing to do...i was forced to use a boolean....hence the major repairs but it has gotten me where i want to be. thanks for all the help.

Uber, if you would like, send me the file and I'll take a look at it.
