View Full Version : Suggestions For Character Animation Software?
callon 03-26-2003, 08:03 PM Hello Folks. I'm just wondering if anyone has any character animation software recommendations? I"m just beginning to work with Maya 4.5 Unlimited and would like to know if you guys use additional software for character animation.
Any feedback/advice is welcome. Thanks!
:p

Maya has all you need... Just make sure to get some video/audio editing software too...
Personally, I'd recommend MotionBuilder for character animation....
You can get a 1 year license of MB (freelance or personal work only) for $100, and then upgrade that to a permanent license for another $100 (between August and December this year...)
I checked out Motion Builder and it looks great but is it only for Maya? What about 3DS Max?

my advice is to spend less time worrying about the software to start with...and begin on learning animation fundamentals.
though, to answer your question more directly, if you are already using Maya, you are using one of THE BEST character aniamtion tools on the planet.

MotionBuilder will work with any program that have a .fbx plugin. (available from the Kaydara website (http://www.kaydara.com/support/download/index.php))
I don't have the definitive list in front of me, but I know it includes Maya, Max, XSI and LightWave, and various others (with more on their way...)

Are you serious?!
Where did you find that out from?
If this is true, then I am definitely getting myself a copy! (Goodbye hardware upgrade :p)
WAIT ONE SECOND!
Motionbuilder 4 is supposedly available in a complete version in a magazine!
saves you even more money:)

Maya has the functions you want from a animation package, and especially since there is a "learn" version for free it cant be beaten. One advice is that when you find your way around the package, make friends with the curve editor! I have been a longtime Max/CS user and just recently (one year) switched to Maya and working with curves is so much better and gives you much better control of the animation keyframes ease in-out via curves,
